1957:
 Yogi Berra tells a writer that the fines paid by players involved in 
the Copacabana incident in May were returned to them. 
2001: For the first time since Mule Haas of the Philadelphia A's a game-tying two-run home run in Game 5 in 1929, a team comes from behind to tie a World Series game in the 9th inning and goes on to win in extra innings. A two-out, two-run home run by Tino Martinez in the bottom of the 9th ties the game, and Derek Jeter hits a home run in the bottom of the 10th, giving the Yankees a 3-2 victory over Arizona to knot the Series at two games apiece. Both homers come off Byung-Hyun Kim, who relieves Curt Schilling in the 8th inning. Mariano Rivera gets the win in relief for the Yankees. Following the 2010 season, a panel of experts at the MLB Network will vote this game the 12th greatest game of the past fifty years.

2009: The Yankees take the lead in the World Series by winning Game 3 8-5 over the Philadelphia Phillies in which six home runs are hit ~ three by each team. Andy Pettitte is the winner over Cole Hamels.

1948: Mickey Rivers is born. 
2001: George W. Bush becomes
 the eighth President of the United States to attend a World Series 
game, and the first since Dwight D. Eisenhower to throw out the 
ceremonial first pitch. Wearing a New York Fire Department windbreaker 
in honor of the heroes of the September 11th attacks, the President 
walks to the mound by himself, gives a thumbs 
up, and throws a perfect strike much to the delight of the stadium 
faithful. In Game 3 of the 2001 WS, the Yankees win 2-1 over the 
Diamondbacks behind strong pitching by Roger Clemens and Mariano 
Rivera.

1920: Ed Barrow resigns as manager of the Red Sox to become
 the general manager of the Yankees. Barrow led Boston to the World 
Championship in 1918 and will find even greater success in New York. 
1991: Buck Showalter replaces Stump Merrill as Yankee manager. At age 35, Showalter becomes the youngest active manager in the major leagues. 
2009: The
 Yankees even the World Series by taking Game 2 at home 3-1 over the 
Phillies. A.J. Burnett and Mariano Rivera combine for the win while Mark
 Teixeira and Hideki Matsui go deep against the Phils' Pedro Martinez.

1953: Red Barber resigns as a Brooklyn Dodgers announcer to join the Yankees broadcast booth.

 Yankees replace fired manager Billy Martin with Dick Howser, head coach
 of the Florida State Seminoles and a former coach with the Bronx 
Bombers. In 1980, Howser will lead the Yankees to 103 victories but will

 Baseball Writers Association of America selects Phil Rizzuto as the AL 
MVP. He posted a .324 batting average with 200 hits and 125 runs, but 
drove 
in just 66 runs. Rizzuto, who receives 16 of 23 first-place votes, 
easily outpoints runner-ups Billy Goodman of the Red Sox and teammate 
Yogi Berra.  
 
1977: Sparky Lyle becomes
 the first AL reliever to win the Cy Young Award. Lyle led the league 
with 72 appearances, posting a 13-5 record with 26 saves and a 2.17 
ERA. 
1996: The Yankees win their 23rd World Series title by
 defeating the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in Game 6. Joe Girardi's RBI triple 
keys a three-run rally against Greg Maddux. John Wetteland in named 
Series MVP after posting his fourth save.

2000: In
 Game 5 at Shea Stadium, the Yankees win their third consecutive World 
Series, their fourth title in five years, and record their 26th World 
Championship by defeating the Mets 4-2. Luis Sojo's 9th-inning two-out, 
tie-breaking single off starter Al Leiter is the decisive hit. Derek 
Jeter becomes the first player to win the All-Star Game MVP and the 
Series MVP honours in the same season. Joe Torre becomes only the fifth 
manager to win four World Series titles.

 a surprising move, the Yankees announce that Joe Girardi will not be

1996: The Yankees win the last game ever played at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.  The Bronx Bombers, who finish the postseason with an 8-0 road record, are helped by poor Atlanta outfield defense and some great plays from their own outfielders as Andy Pettitte outduels John Smoltz 1-0 in Game 5 of the World Series.

1979: Billy Martin is involved in a barroom altercation with Joseph Cooper, a Minnesota 
marshmallow salesman. Cooper requires 15 stitches to close a gash in his lip. The incident results in Martin being fired as Yankee manager for the second time. 
1996: At
 Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the Braves jump out to a 6-0 lead, but 
the Yankees mount the biggest comeback in their long World Series 
history, pulling even with a three-run home run by Jim Leyritz in the 
8th inning. After Bernie Williams is intentionally walked with runners 
on first and second base in the 10th, Steve Avery walks Wade Boggs to 
force in the deciding run.

1974: The
 Yankees and the Giants trade popular outfielders,  drawing the ire of 
their fans. The Giants send Bobby Bonds to New York for Bobby Murcer. 
Bonds will play one season for the Yankees before being traded to the 
California Angels, while Murcer will last only two years with the Giants
 before being dealt to the Cubs.  
1982: Robinson Cano is born. 
1996: In the World Series, David
 Cone holds off the Braves while Bernie Williams drives in three runs in
 a 5-2 win in Game 3 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

2000: In
 Game 2 of the Fall Classic, the Yankees extend their World Series 
winning streak to 14 consecutive games, defeating the Mets 6-5 in a 
contest which is overshadowed by Roger Clemens throwing the barrel of a 
shattered bat in the direction of Mike Piazza as the Mets catcher runs 
to first base. The eagerly-awaited at bat, due
 to Clemens' beaning of Piazza in July, results in the two players 
confronting one another and the emptying of both benches.

Series MVP.  The Game 4 victory gives the Yankees 125 wins against 50 
losses for a .714 winning percentage, the best in the majors since their
 Murderers' Row club of 1927, as their AL record of 114 regular-season 
victories were the most ever for a major league champion team.

2000: In Game 1 of the World Series, the
 Yankees defeat the Mets 4-3 in 12 innings. The longest game in Series 
history (4 hours, 51 minutes) is ended on Jose Vizcaino's single which 
drives home Tino Martinez. It is Vizcaino's fourth hit of the night. The
 Mets lead 3-2 going into the 9th, but reliever Armando Benitez 
surrenders the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Chuck Knoblauch. The 
victory is the Yankees' 13th in a row in Series play, a new record.

1946: The Yankees acquire pitcher Allie Reynolds from the Indians for former AL MVP Joe Gordon and third baseman Eddie Bockman. Reynolds has struggled with Cleveland, losing 15 of 16 decisions during the season. He will reverse his fortunes in 1947, winning 19 games for the World Series champion Yanks.   
1986: George Pipgras dies at the age of 86. 
1987: Billy Martin is named manager of the Yankees for the fifth time, replacing Lou Piniella, who replaced Martin and is moved to general manager. Piniella led the Yankees to an 89-73 record in 1987, fourth in the AL East.  
1992: Atley Donald dies at the age of 82.
