1930: A Labor
 Day crowd of 72‚000 packs the Stadium to see the World Champion A's 
split with the Yankees. The A's take the opener 3-2, with Lefty Grove in
 relief striking out Babe Ruth with 2 on to end the game. Ruth drives in
 a run in the nitecap a 2-0 Yankee win. Red Ruffing pitches his second 
two-hitter in two weeks to beat George Earnshaw.

 Tom Tresh joins teammate Mickey Mantle among 4 AL and five NL players 
to hit homers left- and righthanded in one game. The Yankees beat the 
Orioles 5-4. A tired Mantle‚ who had partied the night before‚ adds a 
pinch homer in the 8th‚ jumping on the first pitch from Mike

1906: Highlanders
 righthander 'Slow Joe' Doyle (so named because of his laborious pace on
 the mound) becomes the first 20th century player to start out with two 
shutouts when he beats Washington 5-0. Of his 23 lifetime victories, 
seven will be shutouts. The 
Yanks take the nitecap as well, 9-8, to begin a sweep of five 
doubleheaders in six days during which they outscore their opponents 
76-31. 
1916: Johnny Lindell is born. 
1922:
  After hitting his 28th home run of the year in the 1st inning, Babe 
Ruth argues a called strike too vehemently in his next at bat and is 
thrown out of the game. He is subsequently suspended for the fifth time 
this season, and is out for three days. 
1931:
 At Boston, Ben Chapman and Lou Gehrig collect four hits each and 
jointly drive in nine runs as the Yankees roll over the Red Sox 14-4. 
Two of Chapman's hits leave the park, as does one of Gehrig's.

1939: Yankee rookie Atley Donald has a fastball timed at 94.7 miles per hour, establishing a new record. 
1945: 28-year-old Yankee rookie Bill Bevens retires
 the first 18 Red Sox batters he faces before giving up a walk and a 
double to Bob Johnson, the only hit for the Boston. Bevens wins, 7-1, 
defeating Boo Ferriss, who was trying for his 21st win.

1986:
 In action at Seattle, Tommy John (43) and Joe Niekro (41) become the 
first over-40 pitchers since 1933 to start both ends of a doubleheader. John loses 1-0, and Niekro pitches five innings for a 3-0 Yankee victory.

 Alex Rodriguez becomes only the second right-handed batter in Yankee

2011: CC Sabathia finally
 defeats the Red Sox, after going 0-4 with a 7.20 ERA in his previous 
efforts against them this year. The Yankees win 5-2 at Fenway Park to 
move to within a half-game of the lead in the AL East. In a moment 
typical of the tense rivalry between the two teams, Francisco Cervelli 
hits only the third home run of his career for the Yanks in the 5th, 
then is plunked by Sox starter John Lackey in his next at-bat, leading 
to both benches clearing and the ejection of New York pitching coach 
Larry Rothschild.

1925: After
 a night on the town, Babe Ruth shows up late for batting practice. 
Miller Huggins suspends Ruth and slaps him with a $5,000 fine for 
disobeying orders on 
the field and team rules off the field. In the showdown between the 
Bambino and the tiny manager, Jacob Ruppert backs up his skipper. Ruth 
is forced to apologize before he's 
reinstated nine days later. The day after his return to the lineup, Ruth
 will hit home run number 300.  
1951:
 The Yankees slam the lowly St. Louis Browns 15-2 at Sportsman's Park. 
Mickey Mantle has 4 RBI, including a 3-run home in the 9th off Satchel 
Paige.

1964: On Elston Howard night at the Stadium, the
 Yankees sweep a pair from Boston, 10-2 and 6-1. Joe Pepitone's three 
home runs, including a grand slam, and Roger Maris' six singles lead the

Babe Ruth's career strikeout record (1,330) in the nightcap.

 John 'Tacks' Neuer begins baseball's most successful short career by 
besting the Red Sox 1-0 in his first start. In one month he will pitch 
six complete games and win four of them, including three shutouts, and 
then disappear from the ML scene.

1921: Despite
 three doubles by Babe Ruth, which also starts a record streak in which 
the Bambino gets a least one extra-base hit in 9 straight games, the

hits, 177 runs, and 457 total bases will go into the record books. His 
.846 slugging average is one

the walk to Yogi Berra. A Bobby Brown sacrifice and an intentional pass
