June 26th

On this day in Yankee history...

1920: Lou Gehrig receives his first national mention when, as a high school junior for NYC's School of Commerce, he steals the show in a high school championship game against Lane Tech at Wrigley Field in Chicago. His grand slam in the 8th gives the New York team a 12-8 victory. Scouts watch open-mouthed as the ball sails out of the park and onto Waveland Avenue.

1961: In Los Angeles, Angel reliever Art Fowler, who has allowed just one hit in his last 12 innings, serves up a 9th-inning home run to Moose Skowron, as the Yankees win 8-6. Mickey Mantle adds an earlier homer, off Ken Mcbride, and Whitey Ford wins his 13th of the year. Yogi Berra collects his 2,000th career hit; to celebrate the achievement, a huge cake is  rolled out.

1974: Derek Jeter is born.

1977: In front of 55,039 fans, the Yankees complete a 3-game sweep of the Red Sox, avenging the three losses last week to the Sox at Fenway Park. New York takes a 4-1 lead into the 9th, but the Sox tie the game. In the bottom of the 9th, Paul Blair bounces a bases-loaded ball over the head of Butch Hobson at third base to pin the loss on reliever Bill Campbell.

1979: The Yankees reacquire Bobby Murcer from the Cubs in exchange for pitcher Paul Semall and cash. Murcer will once again thrive in Yankee Stadium, hitting .273 with eight home runs.

2009: Brett Gardner collects five hits, including a triple and a homer, as the Yankees beat the Mets 9-1 before a record-breaking crowd at Citi Field. Alex Rodriguez hits home run number 564 of his career, passing Reggie Jackson on the all-time list; Jackson was 6th at the time of his retirement in 1987,  but falls to 12th now. Three errors by the Mets' infield in the 2nd lead to four runs.

June 25th

On this day in Yankee history...

1903: In Chicago the White Sox opt to bat first against the visiting Highlanders, but the head start proves to be not much of an advantage as the two teams battle to an 18-inning 6-6 tie, with a cumulative 30 hits between them.

1934: In beating the White Sox 13-2, pitcher Johnny Broaca strikes out 5 times, a dubious achievement that will not repeated by a Yankee until Bernie Williams in 1991. Lou Gehrig contributes to the rout by hitting for the cycle for the first time in his career.

1984: At the Stadium, Dave Winfield hits five singles and drives in four runs to lead the Yankees to a 7-3 win over the Tigers. Ron Guidry (6-5) is the beneficiary of Winfield's barrage. Winfield is now hitting .750 against Detroit this year, and has three five-hit games this month, tying a record set by Ty Cobb.

1999: At Camden Yards, the Yankees top the Orioles 9-8. Shane Spencer hits a go-ahead solo home run in the 9th off Mike Timlin, who will take the loss. On this day in Yankee history...

1908: Charging the Highlander ownership with refusing to spend money to build the team, manager Clark Griffith resigns; shortstop Kid Elberfeld replaces him as player-manager following today's 6-6 tie with the A's. New York continue to fade, and will finish last with 103 losses.

1934:  After going hitless in his last 21 at bats, Babe Ruth hits a grand slam in a 5-0 Yankee win over the White Sox.

Mickey Mantle's drive into the CF bleachers leads off the inning, followed by a single, a walk, Jerry Lumpe's first major league home run, and a home run by Norm Siebern. Ryne Duren strikes out six of the last nine batters to preserve Bob Turley's win.

1962: A marathon between the Yankees and the Tigers concludes in the 22nd inning when Jack Reed's home run ~ the only one of his major league career ~ gives New York and Jim Bouton a 9-7 victory. Reed replaced Joe Pepitone in the 13th. For the Tigers, Phil Regan takes the loss, while Rocky Colavito has seven hits. Bobby Richardson ties a ML mark by going to the plate 11 times. At an even seven hours, the game is the slowest extra-inning contest ever played in the AL, and it is the longest game in innings in Yankee history.

               http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1962/B06240DET1962.htm

1970: In a doubleheader with the Indians at the Stadium, Bobby Murcer ties Lou Gehrig's record of four straight homers. The Yankees lose the opener 7-2 despite Murcer's 9th-inning home run off Sam McDowell. Murcer next connects off the second game's starter, Mike Paul, hitting a solo shot in the 1st inning. A walk follows in the 4th, then a two-run homer off Paul in the 5th, and a game-tying homer in the 8th, off Fred Lasher. New York score in the bottom of the 9th to salvage a 5-4 win.

Haas will pitch in just five more games before ending up in the NFL as a halfback for Akron.

Mantle is leading the AL in hitting and homers and is one behind the Senators' Roy Sievers in RBI.

On this day in Yankee history...

1930: Babe Ruth ties a major league record by hitting five homers in two games and six homers in three games. The Bambino hit three homers in the second game of the doubleheader yesterday, two homers in today's opener and one more in the nightcap.

Mickey Mantle adds a home run in the opener, but in the 4-2 nightcap win, he tries to score from second base on a wild pitch and snaps an upper-thigh hamstring. He will be out for three weeks. Ironically, the cover of the June 21st issue of Sports Illustrated features Mantle with the prescient headline 'New York Yankees: End of an Era?'

Inserted as a defensive replacement late in the game, Boston shortstop Everett Scott starts a string of 1,307 consecutive games, all played at short. He will end the streak as a Yankee on May 6, 1925. It will be the longest until Lou Gehrig surpasses it.

1950: Joe DiMaggio gets his 2,000th hit, a 7th-inning single off the Indians' Marino Pieretti on the way to an 8-2 Yankee win. DiMaggio joins Luke Appling and Wally Moses as the only active players with 2,000 or more hits. Eddie Lopat is the winning pitcher, running his record against Cleveland to 25-6.
