1906: Highlanders
righthander 'Slow Joe' Doyle (so named because of his laborious pace on
the mound) becomes the first 20th century player to start out with two
shutouts when he beats Washington 5-0. Of his 23 lifetime victories,
seven will be shutouts. The
Yanks take the nitecap as well, 9-8, to begin a sweep of five
doubleheaders in six days during which they outscore their opponents
76-31.
1916: Johnny Lindell is born.
1922:
After hitting his 28th home run of the year in the 1st inning, Babe
Ruth argues a called strike too vehemently in his next at bat and is
thrown out of the game. He is subsequently suspended for the fifth time
this season, and is out for three days.
1931:
At Boston, Ben Chapman and Lou Gehrig collect four hits each and
jointly drive in nine runs as the Yankees roll over the Red Sox 14-4.
Two of Chapman's hits leave the park, as does one of Gehrig's.

1939: Yankee rookie Atley Donald has a fastball timed at 94.7 miles per hour, establishing a new record.
1945: 28-year-old Yankee rookie Bill Bevens retires
the first 18 Red Sox batters he faces before giving up a walk and a
double to Bob Johnson, the only hit for the Boston. Bevens wins, 7-1,
defeating Boo Ferriss, who was trying for his 21st win.

1986:
In action at Seattle, Tommy John (43) and Joe Niekro (41) become the
first over-40 pitchers since 1933 to start both ends of a doubleheader. John loses 1-0, and Niekro pitches five innings for a 3-0 Yankee victory.

2005:
Alex Rodriguez becomes only the second right-handed batter in Yankee
history to hit 40 home runs in a season. Joe DiMaggio was the first when

2011: CC Sabathia finally
defeats the Red Sox, after going 0-4 with a 7.20 ERA in his previous
efforts against them this year. The Yankees win 5-2 at Fenway Park to
move to within a half-game of the lead in the AL East. In a moment
typical of the tense rivalry between the two teams, Francisco Cervelli
hits only the third home run of his career for the Yanks in the 5th,
then is plunked by Sox starter John Lackey in his next at-bat, leading
to both benches clearing and the ejection of New York pitching coach
Larry Rothschild.

1925: After
a night on the town, Babe Ruth shows up late for batting practice.
Miller Huggins suspends Ruth and slaps him with a $5,000 fine for
disobeying orders on
the field and team rules off the field. In the showdown between the
Bambino and the tiny manager, Jacob Ruppert backs up his skipper. Ruth
is forced to apologize before he's
reinstated nine days later. The day after his return to the lineup, Ruth
will hit home run number 300.
1951:
The Yankees slam the lowly St. Louis Browns 15-2 at Sportsman's Park.
Mickey Mantle has 4 RBI, including a 3-run home in the 9th off Satchel
Paige.

1964: On Elston Howard night at the Stadium, the
Yankees sweep a pair from Boston, 10-2 and 6-1. Joe Pepitone's three
home runs, including a grand slam, and Roger Maris' six singles lead the
offense. Mickey Mantle hits home run number 447 in the opener and ties
Babe Ruth's career strikeout record (1,330) in the nightcap.

1967: The Yankees and Red Sox tie an AL record by playing 29 innings in a doubleheader. The Sox win
the first game 2-1, then drops the nightcap in 20 innings, 4-3. Winning
pitcher Fred Talbot has a single in the 20th off Darrell Brandon, to
set up Horace Clarke's game-winning single. The game lasts 5:15 and is
the third game this year of 18 innings or more for New York.

besting the Red Sox 1-0 in his first start. In one month he will pitch
six complete games and win four of them, including three shutouts, and
then disappear from the ML scene.

1921: Despite
three doubles by Babe Ruth, which also starts a record streak in which
the Bambino gets a least one extra-base hit in 9 straight games, the
Yankees fall to the Tigers 7-3. At season's end, Ruth's 119 extra-base
hits, 177 runs, and 457 total bases will go into the record books. His
.846 slugging average is one
point behind that of a year ago.

2nd place by edging the Indians 3-2. Leading 2-1. Sam Zoldak wilts in

the walk to Yogi Berra. A Bobby Brown sacrifice and an intentional pass

when Herb Pennock blanks the White Sox 8-0. Bden Chapman has a good day
with a triple, single, two runs scored and his 50th and
51st stolen bases of the year. In addition, he beats the Sox's Carl

1935: Earle Combs collides
while chasing a fly ball with teammate Red Rolfe and suffers a severe
shoulder injury. It will contribute to his decision to retire at the end

66,110 at Cleveland, Mickey Mantle launches an opposite field 2-run
homer off Mike Garcia on the way to a 7-3 Yankee win. New York (77-46)
move to a within a game of the Tribe.

1968: The
Tigers, leading 5-0, fail to score with two on in the 4th inning when
the Ralph Houk brings in Rocky Colavito to pitch for the Yankees. The
35-year-old slugger retires Al Kaline and Willie Horton, and then tosses
another 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. In Rocky's
only other mound appearance, in 1958, he also faced Kaline. The victory
by a non-pitcher will be the last one in the 20th century. Bill Robinson
and Bobby Cox hit back-to-back homers to tie the score and, after a
walk, Rocky comes
around to score the deciding run for the 6-5 win. In the 8th, Yankee
reliever Lindy McDaniel ties the AL record for consecutive batters
retired by setting down the first Tiger
he faces, giving him 32 straight batters retired over four appearances.

Yankees defeat the Angels 7-5, as Roger Clemens becomes the first AL
pitcher to go 17-1 to begin a season. Paul O'Neill hits his 20th home
run of the year, making him the oldest player in
history ~ at age 38 ~ to reach the 20 home run and 20 stolen base mark

The A's take an early 7-1 lead against the Yankees, but it's all Bronx
Bombers after that. Robinson Cano hits a grand slam in the 5th inning,
Russell Martin follows suit in the 6th, they put up another 6 runs in
the 7th, and in the 8th, Curtis Granderson also homers with the bases
loaded to make the Yanks the first team ever to hit three grand slams in
one game. Andruw Jones follows Granderson's blast with a solo homer to
make the final score 22-9. Martin has a career day, going 5 for 5 with a
walk and 6 RBI and
also hitting a solo shot to complement his slam as the Yankees bat
around in their final four innings. It is the most runs given up by an
Athletics team since 1955; their pitchers help the cause by surrendering
22 hits and issuing 13 walks in the rout. In the 9th inning, DH Jorge
Posada takes the field at second base; it is his first major league
appearance
at the position he played in the lower minors 20 years ago.
