2010: The Yankees take two from the Twins at Target Field. First, in a resumption of yesterday's game which was suspended by rain with no score, they win 1-0 on a homer by Derek Jeter. They then win the regularly-scheduled game 3-2 on a long ball by Nick Swisher against Jon Rauch in the 9th that gives Andy Pettite the win. Mariano Rivera saves both wins.

1922: After being thrown out at second base trying to stretch a single, Babe Ruth throws dirt in the face of umpire George Hildebrand, and then goes after a heckler in the stands. Ruth is ejected and eventually fined $500 and suspended one game by AL president Ban Johnson.
2011: In a 7-3 win over the Blue Jays, Mariano Rivera makes his 1000th appearance for the Yankees; he is the 15th to reach the mark, and the first pitcher to do it with only one team.

Another major league record is tied when Ben Chapman draws 5 walks as the Yanks are handed 16 bases on balls. Lou Gehrig exits early and is replaced by his favorite sub‚ Jack Saltzgaver. Monte Pearson is the winner over George Turbeville in the laugher.

1946: The Yankees announce the resignation of manager Joe McCarthy. He is replaced by Bill Dickey. McCarthy reportedly quits because of gall bladder trouble. During his 15-year run in New York, he guided them to eight AL pennants and seven World Series titles.
1952: Jimmy Piersall and Billy Martin first exchange insults before a game at Fenway Park, then exchange punches in the tunnel under the stands. It takes coaches Bill Dickey and Oscar Melillo, along with Boston starter Ellis Kinder, to break up the fight. Piersall goes to the clubhouse to change his bloody shirt and gets into another brawl with teammate Mickey McDermott. He sits as Kinder stops the Yankees 5-2.

1956: Mickey Mantle goes 5 for 5 with an intentional walk in an 11-4 win against the Tigers. Mantle is hitting .421. He combines with Joe Collins for back-to-back homers off Duke Maas.

1989: Yankee reliever Lee Guetterman gives up five runs in the 9th inning of a New York 11-4 loss to the California Angels, ending his consecutive scoreless innings streak at 30 2/3. It is the longest season-opening streak in the majors since Harry Brecheen's in 1948, and the longest season-opening streak ever by a reliever.

1962: Rookie phenom Joe Pepitone hits two home runs in the nine-run 8th-inning of the Yankees' 13-7 triumph over the Kansas City A's.
1964: At the Stadium, the Angels score 4 in the 1st‚ and the Yankees counter with 5 in the bottom of the inning off Bo Belinsky.
That's all the scoring for the pinstripers as the Angels win 9-5.
This is only the second time this season that the injury-plagued Yanks
have started their regular outfield of Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Tom Tresh. Mantle will pull a muscle on the 26th‚ keeping him out of the lineup for two weeks.

The blow breaks up a tense pitching duel between little Mike Cvengros and Herb Pennock, who goes all the way giving up just four hits. The Yanks have now won 12 of 13 contests in their western swing.

but the A's come back to tie it at 12 apiece. The Yanks win the assault,
20-13, as Tony Lazzeri goes 4 for 4, scores five runs, and knocks in 4. Ruth hits another in the second game, while Lou Gehrig powers three round trippers to drive in eight runs. On the A's side, Jimmie Foxx has two homers to drive in six runs. For the afternoon, the teams

1962: Roger Maris, who went all of 1961 without receiving an intentional walk, gets four in a 12-inning, 2-1 win against the Angels to set an AL record. Maris receives five walks in all. Four Yankee pitchers (Whitey Ford, Jim Coates. Bud Daley and Bob Turley) combine to give up just one hit in 12 innings. Ford leaves after seven innings because of back spasms, and Coates gives up the lone hit, a one-out 9th-inning single to Buck Rodgers.

1963: At the Stadium, the Yankees blow a 7-0 lead and allow the Kansas City A's to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Mickey Mantle leading off the 11th, is fooled by a Bill Fischer slow curve, then cannons the next offering to right, almost clearing the roof. "The hardest ball I ever hit," Mantle later comments, a ball that, by some accounts, is still rising when it strikes a foot below the top. It is conservatively estimated by Dr. James McDonald, a physicist who studies long-ball trajectories, that the ball would have traveled 620 feet if it had not struck the façade. "That was the only homer I ever hit that the bat actually bent in my hands," Mantle tells Dale Long, from whom he borrowed the cudgel.

1999: The Yankees defeat the White Sox 10-2, Roger Clemens getting the win. The Rocket sets an AL record with 19 consecutive victories over the course of two seasons; he will extend the streak by one before losing. This win was delayed by a rainout and a stint on the DL.
