1977: Reggie Jackson and Billy Martin become involved in a dugout confrontation at Fenway Park that is seen on national television. After Martin removes his right
fielder for loafing on a ball hit to the outfield, Jackson questions his
manager in the dugout. The two are eventually separated by coach Elston Howard.
2009: The new Yankee Stadium has its first homerless game since th venue opened in April. The Washington Nationals benefit from the power outage, registering a 3-0 win.

2011: A violent collision at home plate between Carlos Pena of the Cubs and Yankee catcher Russell Martin is the highlight of the Yanks' 4-3 win. With New York up 3-2 in the 6th inning, Geovany Soto hits a bases-loaded line drive to left which Brett Gardner catches as he is charging; he fires a one-hop strike to Martin, which arrives just before Pena crashes into him, sending his helmet flying and the catcher rolling on the ground. But Martin holds on for an inning-ending double play. A.J. Burnett is the winner over Ryan Dempster, with Mariano Rivera picking up the save.

2012: Behind the pitching of CC Sabathia, the Yankees beat the Braves 6-2 for their 10th straight win, all in interleague play. Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano homer.

1936: Red Ruffing sets an AL record for pitchers by recording 10 total bases. Ruffing hits two home runs as part of a four-hit day, helping the Yankees to a 15-4 crushing of the Indians.

1941: Joe DiMaggio is credited with a hit in his 30th consecutive game when an easy grounder to shortstop Luke Appling bounces up and hits him on the shoulder. The White Sox beat the Yankees 8-7.

1978: Ron Guidry strikes out 18 batters in a four-hit 4-0 shoutout of the California Angels, setting an AL record for a left-handed pitcher in a single game. Guidry, who strikes
out 15 in the first six innings, posts his 11th consecutive victory. The performance will help coin a new nickname for Guidry
as announcer Phil Rizzuto begins to refer to him as 'Louisiana Lightning'. A new
Yankees tradition is also born as the fans begin to clap rhythmically each time there
are two strikes on the batter.

2015: Michael Pineda makes a bid for a no-hitter until Christian Yelich of the Marlins leads off the 7th inning with a home run; Pineda leaves after two more outs, getting credit for a 2-1 Yankee win, although even if he had not given up a hit, he would likely not

Miami almost tie the game in the 8th, but Adainy Hechevarria's run on a fielder's choice by Dee Gordon is overturned after Joe Girardi successfully challenges the call. Alex Rodriguez has a pair of hits for New York, bringing him within 3 of the 3,000 hit club.

1953: Duane Pillette of the St. Louis Browns ends the Yankees' win streak at 18 and the Browns' team record 14-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory at the Stadium. Johnny Mize becomes the 93rd player in major league history to get 2,000 hits when he singles in the only New York run in the 5th inning.

1962: An injured Mickey Mantle returns after a one-month layoff and hits a dramatic three-run pinch
home run in the top of the 8th inning. Although Mantle's blast gives the Yankees a 9-7 lead, the Indians come back to score a run in the bottom of the 8th and win the game in the 9th on a two-run homer by Jerry Kindall that makes the final score 10-9.

1976: Oakland A's owner Charlie Finley attempts to sell three of his star players. Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers are sent to the Red Sox for $1 million apiece and Vida Blue to the Yankees for $1.5 million. Three days later, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn will void the moves, saying they are "not in the best interests of baseball."
2008: Chien-Ming Wang, who is 8-2 after back-to-back 19-win seasons, breaks his right foot running the bases in an interleague game with the Astros, spoiling a 13 - 0 Yankee rout. Wang will miss the remainder of the season and the injury will completely derail his career.

1933: Lou Gehrig's consecutive games streak remains intact, even though he and Yankee manager Joe McCarthy are ejected from a game. McCarthy is suspended for three games, but not Gehrig, whose streak, now at 1,249, continues.

1921: Babe Ruth hits a 460-foot home run into the center field bleachers at the Polo Grounds, for the first round-tripper ever hit to that spot. Ruth adds his 21st home
run of the season and also pitches five innings in the 13-8 win over
the Tigers, giving up four runs, but striking out Ty Cobb. In tomorrow's game, Ruth will hit two more home runs, his sixth and seventh in five games, in a 9-6 win over Detroit.

1948: A terminally ill Babe Ruth makes his final appearance at Yankee Stadium. With the crowd of 49,641 singing Auld Lang Syne, and members of the 1923 Yankees (the first team to play in the Stadium) looking on, the club retire Ruth's uniform number 3 during ceremonies that also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the ballpark. Fewer than two months later, the 53-year-old Ruth will die from
throat cancer.
2003: Roger Clemens wins his 300th game, and becomes the third pitcher in major league history with 4,000 strikeouts, as he leads the Yankees to a 5-2 win over the Cardinals. Edgar Renteria becomes his 4,000th victim in the 2nd inning. Clemens, the 21st pitcher
to make it to 300 wins, allows two runs in 6 2/3 innings and strikes out 10,
raising his total to 4,006. Clemens joins Nolan Ryan (5,714) and Steve Carlton (4,136) in the select 4,000-strikeout club.

2011: Just 6 hits shy of joining the 3000 hit club, Derek Jeter must put his quest on hold as he exits today's 1-0 Yankee loss to the Indians with a sore right calf and goes on the DL. Jeter gets hit number 2994 with a 1st-inning single off Carlos Carrasco, but leaves in the 5th after feeling a strain while running to first
base. Escaping a none-out, bases loaded jam in the 1st, Carrasco settles
down by pitching seven scoreless innings for the win. The Indians' lone
run off A.J. Burnett comes in the 4th, courtesy of a triple by Michael Brantley followed by a single by Asdrubal Cabrera.

2015: Alex Rodriguez collects his 2000th career RBI with a two-run homer in the Yankees' 9-4 loss to the Orioles. He is the fourth player to reach the milestone, following Cap Anson, Babe Ruth, and all-time leader Hank Aaron.
