The Bronx Bombers, who finish the postseason with an 8-0 road record, are helped by poor Atlanta outfield defense and some great plays from their own outfielders as Andy Pettitte outduels John Smoltz 1-0 in Game 5 of the World Series.

1979: Billy Martin is involved in a barroom altercation with Joseph Cooper, a Minnesota
marshmallow salesman. Cooper requires 15 stitches to close a gash in his
lip. The fight will result in Martin being fired as Yankee manager for the second time.
1996: At Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the Braves jump out to a 6-0 lead, but the Yankees mount the biggest comeback in their long World Series history, pulling even with a three-run home run by Jim Leyritz in the 8th inning. After Bernie Williams is intentionally walked with runners on first and second base in the 10th, Steve Avery walks Wade Boggs to force in the deciding run.

1974: The Yankees and the Giants trade popular outfielders, drawing the ire of their fans. The Giants send Bobby Bonds to New York for Bobby Murcer. Bonds will play one season for the Yankees before being traded to the California Angels, while Murcer will last only two years with the Giants before being dealt to the Cubs.
1982: Robinson Cano is born.
1996: In the World Series, David Cone holds off the Braves while Bernie Williams drives in three runs in a 5-2 win in Game 3 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

2000: In Game 2 of the Fall Classic, the Yankees extend their World Series winning streak to 14 consecutive games, defeating the Mets 6-5 in a contest which is overshadowed by Roger Clemens throwing the barrel of a shattered bat in the direction of Mike Piazza as the Mets catcher runs to first base. The eagerly-awaited at bat, due
to Clemens' beaning of Piazza in July, results in the two players
confronting one another and the emptying of both benches.

The Game 4 victory gives the Yankees 125 wins against 50 losses for a .714 winning percentage, the best in the majors since their Murderers' Row club of 1927, as their AL record of 114 regular-season victories were the most ever for a major league champion team.

2000: In Game 1 of the World Series, the Yankees defeat the Mets 4-3 in 12 innings. The longest game in Series history (4 hours, 51 minutes) is ended on Jose Vizcaino's single which drives home Tino Martinez. It is Vizcaino's fourth hit of the night. The Mets lead 3-2 going into the 9th, but reliever Armando Benitez surrenders the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Chuck Knoblauch. The victory is the Yankees' 13th in a row in Series play, a new record.

2001: The Yankees take a 3-1 lead in their ALCS matchup with the Mariners, defeating Seattle by a score of 3-1. Bret Boone's 8th-inning home run breaks a scoreless tie, but Bernie Williams hits a home run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score. New York win on Alfonso Soriano's two-run homer in the 9th and Mariano Rivera gets the victory in relief.

1946: The Yankees acquire pitcher Allie Reynolds from the Indians for former AL MVP Joe Gordon and third baseman Eddie Bockman. Reynolds has struggled with Cleveland, losing 15 of 16 decisions during the season. He will reverse his fortunes in 1947, winning 19 games for the World Series champion Yanks.
1986: George Pipgras dies at the age of 86.
1987: Billy Martin is named manager of the Yankees for the fifth time, replacing Lou Piniella, who replaced Martin and is moved to general manager. Piniella led the Yankees to an 89-73 record in 1987, fourth in the AL East.
1992: Atley Donald dies at the age of 82.
