Boston, the Yankees roll to a 14-2 win behind Babe Ruth. Lou Gehrig
takes the home run lead with a 5th-inning homer off Tony Welzer, but the
Babe responds with two homers‚ in the 6th and 7th‚ the former a
drive over the CF fence that is called 'the longest ever hit
at Fenway'. There will be 34 homers hit at Fenway this season‚ but only 5 by the
Red Sox. Ruth will hit 8‚ Gehrig 6‚ the only New York home runs hit there.

1961: Roger Maris
connects for home run No. 54‚ off Tom Cheney of the Senators, as the
Yankees win 8-0 behind a Whitey Ford 5-hitter. The Yankee ace is now
23-3 on the season. Johnny Blanchard hits a pair of homers‚ each time
following a walk to Mickey Mantle‚ and Moose Skowron and Bob Hale also
homer.

In Baltimore, the Orioles top the Yankees 7-6 in 13 innings, though
neither Billy Martin, Earl Weaver nor Thurman Munson are still around
for the end, since all three were tossed in the 9th inning after a
furious row that breaks out over called balls and strikes.

having won the first-half AL pennant of the strike-interrupted season,
Gene Michael is replaced as Yankee manager by Bob Lemon, who led the

Yankees acquire first baseman Johnny Hopp, currently second in the NL
in hitting with a .340 average, for an undisclosed amount of cash. The
Yanks believe that Hopp will provide late-season pennant insurance.
1961: The Yankees beat the Senators 6-1, sending
Washington to their 20th defeat in their last 21 games. Mickey Mantle
homers for his 51st. The Yanks' win, coupled with the Tigers dropping
both games of a doubleheader, puts New York ahead by 7 1/2 games.

1964: The
Yankees acquire veteran pitcher Pedro Ramos from the Indians as pennant
insurance. The Indians get two players to be named later: Ralph Terry
on October 12th, and Bud Daley on November 27th.
On the field, Blue Moon Odom makes
his major league debut, and Mickey Mantle greets him with a 3-run
opposite-field homer in the 1st inning. New York hang to win 9-7.

2017: The
New York Times reports that the Red Sox are being investigated for
possible sign-stealing during a series against their eternal rivals the
Yankees last month. The team's assistant athletic trainer is suspected
of
having used a smart watch to capture signs and relay them to players on
the field. While trying to decode the other team's signs is a
long-standing tradition in baseball, using any type of electronic
equipment to do so is strictly prohibited.

Boston, 33,000 are on hand for a doubleheader and to see Babe Ruth
return to his former home park. The Babe hits his 45th homer in the
opener to give New York a 5-3 win. In the nitecap, Carl May pitches to a
mixture of boos and cheers. Mays takes a 5-3 lead into
the 9th, then fails to back up home on a play at the plate. A loose
ball allows Joe Bush to score for a 6-5 Red Sox win.

Sam Jones no-hits the A's in a 2-0 Yankee win, beating Bob Hasty. Babe
Ruth makes the only strikeout of the game as he slips a point behind
Detroit's Harrt Heilmann in the batting race. Not till Ken Holtzman in
1969 will another pitcher record a no-hitter with no strikeouts.

Long-time Yankee batting practice pitcher Paul Schreiber, who last
appeared on a mound in the majors in 1923 and the minors in 1931,
relieves for the Yankees in a Detroit blowout. Schreiber gives up no
hits in 3 1/3 innings, but the Tigers' Dizzy Trout wins 10-0.

misses the Labor Day doubleheader with a painful and swollen forearm,

taking the second game 5-2. The split leaves the Yankees

Kid,' attacks umpire Silk O'Loughlin after a called third strike and is
forcibly removed by police in the first game of a doubleheader, a 4-3
Highlander win over the Philadelphia A's. In the second game, New York
baserunner Willie Keeler collides with shortstop Lave Cross trying to
field a ground ball, and two runs score. O'Loughlin sees no
interference, a call so hotly disputed by A's captain Harry Davis that
after eight minutes of arguing the umpire forfeits the game to the
Highlanders. For New York, it is a major-league record 5th straight
doubleheader sweep in consecutive days.
1921: Powered by Babe Ruth's 50th homer of the year and the pitching of Carl Mays, the Yankees down the host Senators 9-3.

1939: With the 6:30 Sunday curfew approaching, the Yankees begin making deliberate outs as a stalling tactic to avoid a loss in Boston. Irate Fenway Park fans litter the field with hats, cushions and debris. Umpire Cal Hubbard forfeits the game to the Yankees, but AL President Will Harridge subsequently overrules him, calling the game a 5-5 tie and fining the Yankees for what he calls their 'reprehensible tactics.'
