shortstop Mark Koenig as a pinch hitter in the 9th. Babe Ruth's 2-run
homer off Lefty Grove in the 8th clinches the win for the home side. The Bronx Bombers seal the fate of the A's with their 4th straight win against them, leaving Connie Mack's club in 2nd place, 2 1/2 games back.

1966: John Miller becomes the first Yankee ever to hit a homer in his first major league at bat. He contributes two runs in a 4-2 defeat of the Red Sox at Fenway Park. It will be Miller's only homer in pinstripes, but as a Dodger in 1969, he will hit a homer in his last major league at-bat as well.

1995: At Jacobs Field, the Yankees record a rarity in their 4-0 win over the Indians: no assists. Jack McDowell allows
four hits, walks four and strikes out eight in the nine innings as the
Yanks register the 3rd no-assist game in the AL this century. Black Jack retires the side in the 9th on three pitches. The outfield make eight of the 27 putouts. It last happened in the major leagues in a Mets-Phillies game on June 25, 1989, the only time in the NL.

2002: Whitey Ford and Phil Rizzuto unveil a monument dedicated to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The team also has a ceremonial tree planting in Monument Park in honour of the heroes and victims of the horrific events of a year ago.
2014: Alex Cobb of the Rays makes a bid for a no-hitter against the Yankees, holding them hitless until Chris Young doubles with one out and New York trailing 4-0 in the 8th. Pinch-hitter Martin Prado follows with a pinch homer off reliever Brad Boxberger that cuts the lead in half. Not content with having spoiled Cobb's big night, Young then hits a walk-off three-run homer off Jake McGee in the 9th to give the Yanks a 5-4 win.

2017: In a game moved from Tropicana Field to Citi Field because of Hurricane Irma, Jacoby Ellsbury breaks Pete Rose's career mark for reaching base on catcher's interference. It is the 30th time that Ellsbury has managed the otherwise rare manner of making it to first base. The Yankees beat the Rays 5-1 thanks to a three-run homer by Todd Frazier.

Catcher Wally Schang has five of the Yankees' 21 hits as the New
Yorkers wallop the A's 19-3. A major league record-tying five Yankees
collect two hits in the 9th inning: Schang, Carl Mays, Elmer Miller,
Roger Peckinpaugh and Babe Ruth. Ruth's 2nd hit, a single, hits Peck for
the 3rd out. Winning pitcher Mays
gives up 13 hits to Philadelphia in winning his 16th straight against
them.

1922: The Yankees play their final home games at the Polo Grounds. An
estimated 40,000 overflow the stadium for the doubleheader with the
A's, with another 25,000 turned away. Joe Bush (below) beats
Philadelphia 10-3 in the opener, and Waite Hoyt edges the visitors 2-1
in the nitecap. Plans are in the works to expand
the park to 56,000 capacity, but these are the last regular season AL
games at the Polo Grounds. The Yanks will play their next 18 games on
the road, and then open in their own stadium in the Bronx next spring.

a cannon shot for three runs in the 6th inning, the ball
clearing the right field roof and landing in the Brooks Lumber Yard

Trumbull Avenue. The Yankees pin a 5 - 1 loss on Paul Foytack that moves
them a half game into first place ahead of the Orioles, losers today.
In June 1985,
Mantle's blow will retroactively be measured at 643 feet, and will be

1962: Against
Hank Aguirre, Mickey Mantle clouts a 4th-inning home run, the 400th of
his career, to tie the game 1-1. The Yankees score two in the 9th off
Aguirre to beat the Tigers 3-1. The victory, combined with a Minnesota
loss, gives the Yanks a 3 1/2 game lead over the Twins.

1963: Randy Johnson is born.
1978:
The Red Sox throw 22-year-old Bobby Sprowl at the Yankees, and the
lefty lasts just two-thirds of an inning, walking three and
allowing one hit. The Yankees take the lead and top the Red Sox 7-4
behind Ed Figueroa and Rich Gossage. Boston collects just five hits,
including Fred Lynn's 21st homer of the year. The Yankees outhit the Sox
67-21, and outscored them
42-9, in a four-game sweep that will become known in lore as the 'Boston
Massacre'. It leaves the teams in a tie for first place, and caps a
remarkable Yankee march to the top from 4th place and 14 games out.

2010: The Yankees are on the losing end of history, as
they and the Rangers set a major league record by using a combined 19
pitchers in a 13-inning game, won 6-5 by Texas. Scott Feldman, normally a
starter, records the win by pitching a scoreless 13th inning
as the 11th hurler used by Texas, which itself ties a major league
record. The Rangers win the game when Nelson Cruz leads off the bottom
of the 13th inning with a homer off Chad Gaudin.

total of 85,265 jam the Stadium to watch the Yankees sweep a
doubleheader from the A's, 3-0 and 7-3. The Yankees had blown a 13 1/2
game lead over Philadelphia to fall 1 1/2 games behind ~ with the sweep,
they move back in from by half a game, and will stay there. George
Pipgras is the winner in the first game while the Yankee star of the
nitecap is Bob Meusel, who takes an Ed Rommel knuckleball out of the
park for a grand slam in the 8th. Waite Hoyt is the winner.

Off the field, Urban
Shocker dies of pneumonia in Denver, CO, where he had gone for his
health. Only now does it become known that the Yankee pitcher
had suffered from an enlarged heart and was unable to sleep lying down
for two years. Shocker, who never had a losing season, was 18-6 in 1927,
but appeared in only one game in 1928.
1932:
Lou Gehrig hits a grand slam and drives in 8 runs, but all in vain as
the Tigers beats the Yankees 14-13 in 14 innings. The Iron Horse has
reached this RBI feat twice before. Frankie Crosetti strikes out four times in the game, including twice in one inning.

1951: The
Yankees hit five homers ~ 4 off the Senators' Dick Starr ~ to win 7-5.
Mickey Mantle's leadoff homer on the first pitch, which starts the
scoring, slams
against the bottom of the flag holder on the top of the right field
stands. Vic Raschi then wins the nitecap, 2-0, in a game called after
the 6th inning because of 'darkness.' Though Yankee Stadium has lights,
by AL rules they cannot be used on Sunday. The Yanks (88-49) remain
virtually tied with the Indians (88-51).

1953: Mickey Mantle's 2-run
home run off Chicago's Billy Pierce caps a 7-run 5th inning, as the
Yankees win 9-3 at the Stadium. Returning to CF after the 5th, Mantle is
photographed blowing a huge bubble with a wad of gum. Casey Stengel
will publicly rebuke the Mick, who will apologize for the indiscretion.
However, Mantle does get an endorsement fee from the Bowman Gum
company.

Whitey Ford Day at the Stadium, Roger Maris hits his 56th homer, off
Cleveland's Mudcat Grant, as the Yankees come from behind to win 8-7.
New York score four in the 9th to enable Luis Arroyo to pick up his 12th

1978: Ron Guidry (21-2)
gives up two singles in the 1st inning and that's it. The Yankees send
12 runners to the plate and scores seven runs in the 4th inning to win
7-0 against Dennis Eckersley and cut Boston's division lead to a single
game. For Guidry, it is his 7th shutout of the year, and the first lefty
shutout at Fenway Park since Ken Holtzman fired one on August 5, 1974.

Derek Jeter ties the Yankee franchise record for hits held by Lou
Gehrig with his 2,721st in the 7th inning against the Rays. Jorge Posada

1922: The Yankees go back on top in the AL pennant race, go

Kemp will miss the rest of the season with a fractured cheekbone after
being struck in the face by an Omar Moreno line drive during batting
practice in Milwaukee. Kemp hit just .242 with 12 home run and 49 RBI in
the first year of his 5-year, $5.45 million contract.
1984: The
Yankees break a 4-4 tie with two runs in the 6th to roll over the Red
Sox 12-6. Toby Harrah paces the 15-hit attack with four hits, and Dave
Winfield hits one of the game's 12 doubles to extend his hitting streak
to 20 games, which is and will be a career high. Joe Cowley is the

occurs in the 9th inning when Boston pitcher Bryce Florie is hit in the
face with a line drive off the bat of Ryan Thompson. The Red Sox hurler
never loses consciousness and leaves the field with
blood streaming down his face. Florie suffers a fractured cheekbone and a
fracture of the orbital socket, the bone that surrounds the eye, and
retinal damage. He will undergo surgery .

2007:
Alex Rodriguez continues to lead the Yankees in their playoff hopes,
homering twice off Brian Bannister of the Roayls. The first of the
homers is his 49th of the year and breaks the record for homers by a
third baseman. He had previously shared the record with Mike Schmidt (48
in 1980). The Yankees win 11-5. A-Rod already holds the single-season
record for shortstops, giving him the highwater mark at two positions.

a game with the Tigers, Graig Nettles loses a single when it is
discovered he is using a corked bat. The Yankees win 1-0 on Nettles'
earlier solo homer.
1978: The
Yankees, trailing the Red Sox by four games in the AL East race, arrive
in Boston for a crucial 4-game series. The Yanks begin the 'Boston
Massacre' with a 15-3 rout as Willie Randolph drives in five of the
runs. The Yanks collect 21 hits off four Sox pitchers, including three
hits apiece by Randolph, Thurman Munson and Roy White. Mike Torrez, with
one inning of work, takes the loss. Ken Clay, in relief of Catfish
