1936: Joe DiMaggio makes his Yankee debut, collecting three hits in a 14-5 victory over the St. Louis Browns.

1950: Vic Raschi, clearly troubled by the new rule that requires a one-second stop before delivery with men on base, balks four
times in one game, a Yankee franchise record and two fewer than the
single-season record. Nevertheless, Raschi wins 4-3 over the White Sox. He will finish the season with six balks to tie the since-topped AL mark.

1951: Yankee rookie Gil McDougald ties a major league record by driving in six runs in one inning. McDougald hits a grand slam and a two-run triple in the 9th inning of a 17-3 demolition of the St. Louis Browns at Sportsman's Park. The record will eventually be broken by Fernando Tatis of the Cardinals in 1999.

1986: Don Mattingly connects for three sacrifice flies in a 9-4 victory over the Rangers. Mattingly becomes only the sixth major leaguer to accomplish this feat.

2012: Mariano Rivera suffers a torn ligament in his right knee while shagging fly balls during batting practice before the Yankees' game with the Royals.
He is carted off the field, and at 42, the injury appears to be
career-ending, but he will be back to pitch a final season in 2013.

Yankee shortstop Everett Scott receives a gold medal from the American
League for playing in his 1000th consecutive game. His team falls to
Washington 3-0, however, as Senators ace Walter Johnson hurls his 100th
career shutout.

1939: Lou Gehrig sits
down against the Tigers at Briggs Stadium in Detroit, ending at 2,130
his streak of consecutive games played. An ailing Gehrig removes himself
from the lineup, telling his manager Joe McCarthy that he cannot play
because of continuing weakness. Doctors will later diagnose Gehrig with
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a fatal disease that affects the muscles.
The Iron Horse will never play again. In the game that follows,
however, his replacement Babe Dahlgren and teammates roll over the
Tigers 22-2.

1992: Yankee pitcher Scott Sanderson pitcher
becomes the 12th pitcher in major league history to surrender four home
runs in a single inning. Sanderson is rocked in the 5th frame against
the Twins by Shane Mack, Kirby Puckett, Kent Hrbek and Randy Bush. The
Twins will need all the roundtrippers as they edge the Yanks 7-6.

1995:
The Yankees are on the losing end of a major league first when former
college teammates John Valentin and Mo Vaughn of the Red Sox both hit
grand slams in a 8-0 shutout of the Bombers. It is the first time in ML
history that all of the runs in a game have been accounted for by two
grand slams.

1951: On Mother's Day, Mickey Mantle hits the first home run of his career, off Randy Gumpert in an 8-3 victory over the White Sox at Comiskey Park. In the same game, former Negro Leagues star Minnie Miñoso becomes
the first black player in the history of the White Sox franchise.
Miñoso belts a home run in his first at-bat for the team off Vic Rashi.

2010: The Yankees suffer a double loss today. They bow to the White Sox 7-6, as Andruw Jones and A.J. Pierzynski hit long balls, then place starting CF Curtis Granderson on the DL because of a strained left groin suffered while running the bases.

2015: Alex Rodriguez ties Willie Mays for fourth place on the all-time home run list when he hits number 660 against the Red Sox . The homer comes as A-Rod pinch hits in the 8th inning facing Junichi Tazawa and gives the Yankees a 3-2 lead that will hold for the rest of the game.

first American League regular season game is played in NYC, as the
Highlanders open at home at Hilltop Park against the Washington
Senators. The home team take the win 6-2.
1940:
Patrick 'Patsy' Dougherty dies at the age of 63. In 1904, Dougherty
became the first player to be traded from the Boston AL franchise (then
known as the Americans) to New York.

1988: Dave Winfield drives
in his 28th and 29th runs of the season in the Yankees' 15-3 rout of
the Rangers, tying the major league record for RBI in April.

Martinez, who got off to a painfully slow start with the Yankees last
season, finishes April with 34 RBI to set a major league record for the
month.
1999: An estimated 3,000
fans wearing T-shirts that say '$hare the wealth' protest baseball
economics at ta Yankees-Royals game at Kauffman Stadium. The protesters
turn their backs when the Yankees bat, then walk out during the 4th
inning. The Yankees began the season with baseball's top payroll at
$85.05 million, and the Royals were 25th at $23.8 million.

1923: The Yankees sign 20-year-old prospect Lou Gehrig to a contract paying him a salary of $2,000 and a bonus of $1,500. Yankees scout Paul Krichell watched the Columbia University star blast a 450-foot home run against NYU one day earlier.
1933: In an unusual play at the plate, Washington Senators catcher Luke Sewell tags out two Yankee runners on the same play. Lou Gehrig had held up, thinking a fly ball would be caught. Dixie Walker closes up on him, and both are tagged out by Sewell while trying to score.

Billy Martin as their manager for a fourth time. The fiery Martin, one
of George Steinbrenner's favourite skippers, replaces Yogi Berra, who is
fired just 16 games into the season.
1989: Rickey Henderson sets
a major league record when he leads off a game with a home run for the
36th time in his career, breaking a tie with Bobby Bonds.

2013: The Yankees complete
a four-game sweep of Toronto with a 3-2 win at home. All four wins are
come-from-behind, today's being highlighted by a two-run homer by Lyle
Overbay in the 7th. Jays ace R.A. Dickey, still complaining of a stiff
neck and back, falls to 2-4 on the year and will undergo an MRI to find
the source of the persisting discomfort.

2017: Trailing
9-1 against the Orioles in the 6th, the Yankees mount a tremendous
comeback to pull off a 14-11 win. Matt Holliday ends the game with a
three-run walk-off homer off Jayson Aquino in the 10th, the eighth long
ball of the game. The Yankees had tied the score in the 9th on Starlin
Castro's two-run blast off Brad Brach. Each team hits a grand slam, Mark
Trumbo delivering one for the O's, and Jacoby Ellsbury doing the
honours for the Yanks. For his part, Aaron Judge goes deep twice for New
York, while Manny Machado and Welington Castillo reply for Baltimore.
The two teams are now tied for the lead in the AL East at 14-7.
