1927: At the Stadium, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig hit back-to-back home runs in the 4th inning off Tommy Thomas to beat the White Sox 4-1,  increasing the Yankees' lead over Chicago to two games. Pat Collins also homers for the Yankees, while Bud Clancy matches for Chicago.

1936: A home run by George Selkirk in the 16th inning gives Red Ruffing and the Yankees a 5-4 win over Oral Hildebrand and the Indians. Ruffing has three hits, including a homer. Remarkably, there are no strikeouts in the long game.

1967: The last-place Yankees have the first pick in the free-agent draft, and use it to take Ron Blomberg. In 1973, Blomberg will be the first designated hitter in major league history.  

1998: David Cone strikes out 14 batters as he hurls a two-hitter to lead the Yankees to a 4-1 decision over the Florida Marlins.

1965: Switch-hitting Tom Tresh connects for three consecutive home runs in the Yankees' 12-0 blowout against the White Sox. Tresh hits his first homer right-handed off Juan Pizarro in the first inning, then goes to the other side of the plate and hits two against Bruce Howard in the third and fifth innings.

1958: At the Stadium, the Yankees rout White Sox starter Early Wynn for a 12-5 victory. In the 3rd inning, Mickey Mantle legs out his third inside the park home run in a month.

1963: At Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, Mickey Mantle fractures a bone in his left foot and suffers ligament and cartilage damage to the left knee running into the chain link fence chasing down a Brooks Robinson drive. Mantle will be out for 61 games.  Whitey Ford beats Milt Pappas and the Orioles 4-3, as the Yankees return to first place.

1979: The Yankees select Don Mattingly in the 19th round of the MLB draft. 

 







2006: Jason Giambi and Andy Phillips each hit a three-run home run in a seven-run 2nd inning, and the host Yankees rough up old nemesis Josh Beckett in a 13-5 rout of the Red Sox. New York collect 11 hits, making this their 12th consecutive game with at least 10, breaking the franchise record of 11 straight games set in May 1937.

On this day in Yankee history... 


1915: Ty Cobb steals home in the 9th inning of a 3-0 Tigers win, the only steal of home that late in a game in his career. Yankee pitcher Ray Caldwell is so angry at the safe call he throws his mitt into the stands and is promptly ejected by umpire Silk O'Loughlin. It is Cobb's second steal of home with Caldwell on the mound (the first was on May 12th, 1911).

1922: At the Polo Grounds, Carl Mays collects 3 hits and beats the A's for the 21st straight time. The Yankees win 8-3, as Babe Ruth clouts a three-run homer.

1939: Phil Linz is born

1953: At Chicago‚ Mickey Mantle's homer in the 4th off Billy Pierce gives the Yankees a 5-0 lead, but the White Sox come back to tie it up. The Mick's leadoff single in the 10th inning ignites a New York rally‚ and they win 9-5.

1988: Rickey Henderson steals 2 bases in New York's 7-6‚ 14-inning loss to the Orioles, giving him a club-record 249 thefts as a Yankee.

1990: In the 22nd round of the MLB draft the Yankees select 17-year-old Andy Pettitte of Deer Park, TX as the 594th pick overall. In the 24th round, they will choose 19-year-old Jorge Posada of San Juan, PR, 646th overall.

1932: Lou Gehrig  hits four consecutive home runs and narrowly misses a fifth, and Tony Lazzeri hits for the cycle as the Yankees beat the Philadelphia A's 20-13. The Yanks set a major league record for total bases with 50 and both teams set a still-standing record for extra bases with 41.

1972: Tied 10-10 with the White Sox after 12 innings, both Bobby Murcer and Thurman Munson will deliver 3-run homers in an 8-run 13th for the Yankees. Murcer has 4-hits and scores 5 times in the 18-10 final.

2003: Derek Jeter is named the 11th team captain in Yankee history. 

2004: At the Stadium, the Yankees score 3 run in the 7th-inning runs on a Gary Sheffield double and a Hideki Matsui single on the way to a 5-2 win over the Orioles. Before the game, Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada are presented with 2003 Silver Slugger Awards before the game.

1992: The Yankees use their first round pick in the amateur draft to select Derek Jeter of Kalamazoo, MI.
