Detroit, Babe Ruth wallops a Tommy Bridges 3-2 offering far over the
right field wall for his 700th career home run. The 4-2 victory over the
Tigers puts the Bronx Bombers back into first place, but Lou Gehrig has
to be helped off the field in the 1st inning with a severe bout of
lumbago.

1947: Making
his 14th major-league uniform switch, Bobo Newsom joins the Yankees.
His 7-5 record the rest of the way will help his new club to the title.

1973: Bobby Murcer hits
three home runs, all off Kansas City starter Gene Garber, and knocks in
all the runs in the Yankees' 5-0 win over the Royals. Mel Stottlemyre
scatters six hits in racking up his 39th career shutout. Murcer will
not hit another homer until August 19th.

1984: The
Yankees retire the uniform numbers of Roger Maris (9) and Elston Howard
(32). Eight days from now, t he team also erects plaques in their honor

third baseman Roy Hartzell, acquired from the Browns in January for
Jimmy Austin and Frank LaPorte, has a career day as the cleanup hitter.
He hits a three-run double and
another double in one inning, then piles on a sacrifice fly and a grand
slam, to drive in 8 runs. It is an AL record that stands until Jimmie
Foxx's 9 RBI in a game in 1933. New York romp over St. Louis 12-2.

the Highlanders' 4-1 win over the Browns, New York pitcher Jack Warhop

2013: Derek Jeter plays
for the Yankees for the first time since breaking his ankle in Game 1
of the 2012 ALCS. Inserted as the DH, he singles on the first pitch he
sees and comes in to score as the Yanks beat the Royals 8-4. Jeter comes
back after only four rehabilitation outings in the minors, after two
Yankees starters, center fielder Brett Gardner and DH Travis Hafner, are
injured the previous day. However, Jeter leaves the game after the
5th inning with a tight quad muscle and will undergo an MRI.

1986: The Padres trade
Tim Stoddard to the Yankees for Ed Whitson, who had become the target
of such fan abuse in New York that manager Lou Piniella would no longer
pitch him in Yankee Stadium.
1999: The
uniform worn by Lou Gehrig when he made his famous 'Luckiest man on the
face of the earth' speech on July 4th, 1939 sells for $451,541 at
auction. Leland's spokesman Marty Appel says the flannel pinstripe
uniform worn by the Hall of Fame first baseman was purchased by a south
Florida man who did not want his
name made public. The winning bid was made over the phone.
2011: Derek Jeter becomes
the 28th member of the 3000 hit club with a 5-for-5 day against the
Tampa Bay Rays at the Stadium. The second of the 5 hits, a homer off
David Price in the 3rd inning, gets him to the milestone. He then adds
two singles and a double as the Yankees win 5-4.

Prior to the first game of a doubleheader with the Red Sox at Yankee
Stadium, a mass of Japanese beetles forms in front of the home dugout.

At the Stadium, Whitey Ford tops the Red Sox 8-5. Mickey Mantle hits a
home run in the 4th off Tracy Stallard for his 10th roundtripper this

doubleheader since 1903 by identical 4-2 scores, in the afternoon at
Shea Stadium, and in the veening in the Bronx. It proves to be quite an
interesting day in New York as Mike Piazza is hospitalized with a
concussion after being beaned by Roger Clemens. Dwight Gooden gets his
first Shea win since 1994, and a bizarre obstruction call on Mets first
baseman Todd Zeile causes the first game to be played under protest.

On this day in Yankee history...
1903: In
a game with the Highlanders, White Sox outfielder Danny Green is called
out at first base by umpire Jack Sheridan. Green disputes the call,
and after returning to the bench continues to yell at the arbiter.
Sheridan finally rushes the bench and hits Green with his mask. Green
then punches the ump, who is removed from the grounds and locked up on
charges of disorderly conduct. An hour later, he is released after bail
is posted by Highlander president Joseph Gordon.
1921:
Major League-leading slugger Babe Ruth brings the Yankees but
apparently little else ~ least of all his A-game ~ to Forbes Field for
an exhibition contest against the NL-leading Pirates. Ralph Davis of the
Pittsburgh Press
is clearly not at all impressed: "Bambino Didn't Shine. Babe Ruth
didn't have a batting average yesterday. His strikeout average was .500.
The King of Swatters didn't look good against Hal Carlson's pitching.
He struck wide at several pitches and fanned twice. His other efforts
were flies to Max Carey and Dave Robertson. Rip Collins,
the Yankee pitcher, witnessed the game from the press box. As Robertson
captured Ruth's fly, he remarked: 'You can't make me believe that the
National League ball is as lively as the American League sphere. If Ruth
had cracked one like that in our league, the ball would
have gone to kingdom come.' As a fielder, Ruth was a joke yesterday.
Luckily for the Yanks, he didn't have many chances, but he surely looked
slow and bad on those he had." One of those chances is Charlie Grimm's
2nd-inning triple which bounces over Ruth's head, scoring the Bucs'
first run and setting up the second, which ties the contest at two all.
One inning later, Robertson unties it with a tape-measure, two-run blast
and the Bucs never look back.
