1924: Charlie Silvera is born.

1978: Manning his position at third base, Graig Nettles puts on a fielding clinic and prevents an estimated seven runs as the Yankees beat the Dodgers 5-1 in Game 3 of the World Series. Nettles makes four spectacular stops and gives the Yankees their first victory of the October Classic.

1996: Powered by three home runs in the 3rd inning and eight strong innings from Andy Pettitte, the Yankees win their 34th AL pennant with a 6-4 victory over Baltimore. The Yankees take the ALCS 4 games to 1, and will go to the World Series for the first time since 1981.

1998: The Yankees advance to the World Series for a record 35th time after beating the Cleveland Indians 9-5 to win the ALCS in six games.

2000: Mariano Rivera breaks Whitey Ford's record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched in postseason play with 33 1/3 blank frames, as the Yankees batter the Mariners 8-2 to take a 2 games to 1 lead in the ALCS.

2012:  In Game 1 of the ALCS, Raul Ibanez hits a homer to cap a game-tying four-run outburst against Tigers' closer Jose Valverde in the 9th inning, but Detroit manage to overcome the psychological blow to win 6-4 in 12 innings. Derek Jeter collects the 200th postseason hit of his career in the game ~ second place on the all-time list is held by his long-time teammate Bernie Williams with 128 ~ but he then suffers a broken ankle while fielding a ground ball in the 12th, putting him out for the rest of the postseason.

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1948: The Yankees announce that Casey Stengel has been hired to replace Bucky Harris as their manager. Stengel, who receives a two-year contract, will lead the Yankees to five consecutive World Championships beginning in 1949.  

2012: Behind CC Sabathia, the Yankees fight off the pesky Orioles 3-1 in Game 5 of the ALDS.  Sabathia allows only 4 hits in a dominant complete game effort. With Alex Rodriguez on the bench, New York score twice in 6 innings against Jason Hammel, and Curtis Granderson adds a solo homer in the 7th. The Orioles score once in the 8th, but never mount a significant threat against the Yankee ace.

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1900: The American League announce that they will put a team in Baltimore in 1901, with John McGraw as manager. This is the birth of the franchise that will move to New York in 1903 and become the Highlanders. 

1943: Spud Chandler shuts out the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 as the Yankee win the World Series in five games. Chandler gives up 10 hits and strands 11 runners. Bill Dickey's two-run homer in the 6th inning is the difference.

1991: Gio Urshela is born.  

   

2006: Cory Lidle is killed when a small plane he is in crashes into a residential building in Manhattan. 

2009: The Yankees complete a sweep of their ALDS, defeating Minnesota 4-1 in the last game ever played at the Metrodome. Solo home runs by Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada off Carl Pavano in the 7th are the deciding blows. Andy Pettitte wins the 15th postseason game of his career, tying the record held by John Smoltz.

2017: The Yankees complete a stunning comeback from being two games to none down after a devastating extra-innings loss in Game 2 to stun the heavily-favored Indians 5-2 in Game 5 of the ALDS, eliminating them from the postseason. Didi Gregorius hits a pair of homers off a shaky Corey Kluber in the first three innings to give New York an early 3-0 lead, but after Cleveland chase CC Sabathia with 2 runs in the 4th, the Yankee bullpen goes to work, shutting them down the rest of the way.

 On this day in Yankee history... 
   
     
     1923: It's an all-New York World Series for the third straight year. In Game 1, a 4-4 tie is broken in the top of the 9th inning by the Giants as they defeat the Yankees 5-4. Pitcher Rosy Ryan gets the win and Joe Bush is the loser. Casey Stengel's inside-the-park home run is the first Series round-tripper  hit at the Stadium. This is the first World Series to be broadcast on a nationwide radio network.

1926: One day after picking up his second complete-game victory of the Series, 39-year-old Grover Cleveland Alexander saves Game 7 and the World Series for the Cardinals, fanning Tony Lazzeri with the bases loaded in the 7th inning, then proceeding to no-hit the Yankees the rest of the way. The game concludes with a runner being thrown out trying to steal, Babe Ruth. With two outs in the top of the 9th, Alexander misses on a 3-2 pitch and Ruth is walked for the third time, having homered in his only official at-bat. With New York trailing by one, Ruth reasons that, with nobody having hit the ball out of the infield against the aging Cardinal ace, the Yankees' best bet is to at least get a runner into scoring position in case one of their ground balls finally finds a hole. However, he fails in his bold attempt, ending the game and the Series.

1937: In the World Series, Lefty Gomez knocks in the winning run in the 4-2 clincher in Game 5 against the Giants. It is his record fifth World Series win without a loss. Another record comes when the Yankees complete the Series without an error.

1951: Hank Bauer's bases-loaded triple in Game 6 of the World Series propels the Yankees to a 4-3 win over the Giants and their third straight Series victory.

1956: Johnny Kucks  blanks the Brooklyn Dodgers as the Yankees win the World Series in seven games. Yogi Berra launches a pair of two-run home runs and Bill Skowron hits a grand slam. It is the seventh and final time Brooklyn and the Yankees meet in the Series. In the future, it will take a jet, not a subway, to get these two teams together, as the Dodgers will move to Los Angeles in 1958.

2012: Pinch-hitting for a struggling Alex Rodriguez in the bottom of the 9th, Raul Ibanez homers off Orioles closer Jim Johnson to tie the score. Joe Girardi's bold move pays off twice, as Ibanez homers again against Brian Matusz in the 12th inning to give New York a 3-2 walk-off victory in Game 3 of the ALDS. Baltimore had taken a 2-1 lead on homers by rookies Ryan Flaherty and Manny Machado off Hiroki Kuroda, until Ibanez turns the game's tide.

1928: Babe Ruth hits three home runs in a World Series game for the second time in his career as the Yankees beat the Cardinals 7-3 to wrap up their third Championship.

1938: The Yankees become the first team to win three successive World Championships, defeating the Cubs 8-3. Red Ruffing posts his second victory of the Series as the Yankees sweep the Cubs for the second time in six years.

1949: The Yankees outhit the Brooklyn Dodgers 10-6 to win the World Series in five games. Pinch Hitter and third baseman Bobby Brown is the hitting hero, batting .500 and driving in five runs.

1958: Bob Turley pitches 6 2/3 shutout innings in relief to beat the Milwaukee Braves 6-2 for the World Series title. The Yankees become the first team since 1925 to win the Series after being down 3 games to 1.

1977: The Yankees rally for three runs in the 9th inning to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3, and take the AL pennant in the fifth game of the ALCS.

2017: The Yankees forces a decisive fifth game in the ALDS by defeating Cleveland 7-3. Trevor Bauer is victimized by an error by 3B Giovanny Urshela, allowing 4 unearned runs in the 2nd to be yanked out of the game early. The Yanks then score another gift run on one more error by Urshela in the 3rd. Luis Severino pitches 7 strong innings to earn the win, while Tommy Kahnle retires all six batters he faces, five of them on strikeouts, to earn the save.

 On this day in Yankee history... 


1927: In Game 4 of the World Series, facing elimination at the stadium, the Pirates are tied with the Yankees 3-3 in the bottom of the 9th. Reliever Johnny Miljus fans Lou Gehrig and Bob Meusel with the bases loaded, but a two-strike wild pitch to Tony Lazzeri allows Earle Combs to scamper home with the winning run for the Yanks and capture the World Series.

1956: Don Larsen pitches the only perfect game in World Series history for a 2-0 triumph over the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1961: Whitey Ford sets a World Series record for consecutive scoreless innings by extending his streak to 32 in a 7-0 shutout of the Cincinnati Reds in Game 4.  The mark had previously been held by Babe Ruth.

2017: In ALDS action, Carlos Carrasco of the Indians and Masahiro Tanaka are locked in a pitchers' duel until the 7th, when Greg Bird hits a solo homer off Andrew Miller for the sole run of the game. Aroldis Chapman records the final five outs, four of them on strikeouts, as the Yankees avoid elimination.
