On this day in Yankee history... 

1933: Lou Gehrig's consecutive games streak remains intact, even though he and Yankee manager Joe McCarthy are ejected from a game. McCarthy is suspended for three games, but not Gehrig, whose streak, now at 1,249, continues. 

June 13th

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1921: Babe Ruth hits a 460-foot home run into the center field bleachers at the Polo Grounds, for the first round-tripper ever hit to that spot. Ruth adds his 21st home run of the season and also pitches five innings in the 13-8 win over the Tigers, giving up four runs, but striking out Ty Cobb. In tomorrow's game, Ruth will hit two more home runs, his sixth and seventh in five games, in a 9-6 win over Detroit.

1948: A terminally ill Babe Ruth makes his final appearance at Yankee Stadium. With the crowd of 49,641 singing Auld Lang Syne, and members of the 1923 Yankees (the first team to play in the Stadium) looking on, the club retire Ruth's uniform number 3 during ceremonies that also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the ballpark. Fewer than two months later, the 53-year-old Ruth will die from throat cancer.  

2003: Roger Clemens wins his 300th game, and becomes the third pitcher in major league history with 4,000 strikeouts, as he leads the Yankees to a 5-2 win over the Cardinals. Edgar Renteria becomes his 4,000th victim in the 2nd inning. Clemens, the 21st pitcher to make it to 300 wins, allows two runs in 6 2/3 innings and strikes out 10, raising his total to 4,006. Clemens joins Nolan Ryan (5,714) and Steve Carlton (4,136) in the select 4,000-strikeout club.

2011: Just 6 hits shy of joining the 3000 hit club, Derek Jeter must put his quest on hold as he exits today's 1-0 Yankee loss to the Indians with a sore right calf and goes on the DL. Jeter gets hit number 2994 with a 1st-inning single off Carlos Carrasco, but leaves in the 5th after feeling a strain while running to first base. Escaping a none-out, bases loaded jam in the 1st, Carrasco settles down by pitching seven scoreless innings for the win. The Indians' lone run off A.J. Burnett comes in the 4th, courtesy of a triple by Michael Brantley followed by a single by Asdrubal Cabrera.

2015: Alex Rodriguez collects his 2000th career RBI with a two-run homer in the Yankees' 9-4 loss to the Orioles. He is the fourth player to reach the milestone, following Cap Anson, Babe Ruth, and all-time leader Hank Aaron.

1939: The Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York is dedicated. Babe Ruth is among the inaugural group of inductees.

2010: Derek Jeter homers twice and Jorge Posada hits a grand slam in the Yankees' 9-3 win over the Astros. Houston's Wandy Rodriguez (3-9) is the victim of the offensive surge, accomplished in the absence of Alex Rodriguez, still bothered by a groin injury.

2012: Alex Rodriguez ties Lou Gehrig's record by hitting his 23rd career grand slam, off the Braves' Jonny Venters. A-Rod's 8th-inning blast allows the Yankees to tie the score, and Nick Swisher hits a two-run shot later that inning for a 6-4 win.

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1915: In a 10-9 win over the White Sox, Yankee pitcher Ray Caldwell hits a pinch home run, his second in two days. He hit one yesterday in a 5-4 loss to the White Sox. No one else in the AL will repeat the feat until Joe Cronin in 1943.  Tomorrow, Caldwell will hit another long ball‚ but he is on the mound in that game.

1919: Jack Quinn shuts out the Tigers 7-0, while Yankee shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh goes 2 for 3 to start a 29-game hitting streak.

1927: At the Stadium, Babe Ruth clouts two consecutive home runs (numbers 19 and 20) off Garland Buckeye‚ but his next time up Ruth is set upon by Indians catcher Luke Sewell who demands that the umpires inspect the Bambino's bat. The umps find nothing illegal‚ but the crowd of 30‚000 cheer the Babe‚ who strikes out. Tony Lazzeri adds a homer and New York win 6-4. George Burns is 3 for 3 with 2 doubles for the Tribe.

1935: In their annual exhibition game at West Point, the Yankees blank the cadets 7-0. Jim DeShong applies the whitewash by going the distance. 

1953: Behind the pitching of Jim McDonald and Allie Reynolds, the first-place Yankees beat the Tigers 6-3 to run its win streak to 14 games. New York get a game-winner from Mickey Mantle off Art Houtteman that crowns the roof in right center at Detroit. Mantle has now hit in 16 straight games‚ but will go hitless tomorrow‚ when he pulls a thigh muscle. Hitting .353 at the end of today‚ Mantle will hit just .255 the rest of the year. The Yankees get another tape-measure blast when Joe Collins hits a 2-out 7th inning homer that lands on the 98-foot high press box over the 370-foot sign.

1961: The Yankees sweep two from the Angels‚ winning the opener 2-1 behind Ralph Terry's 5-hitter. Yogi Berra clouts a pair of solo homers. In the nitecap‚ Mickey Mantle's first inning homer‚ number 19‚ gives him the AL lead, but Roger Maris adds a pair of home runs‚ his 19th and 20th‚ as New York win 5-1. The Yanks have won 10 of their last 11 games.

1974: Mel Stottlemyre makes his 272nd consecutive start, with no relief appearances, to set an AL record. In the 4th inning‚ Stottelmyre feels a pop in his right shoulder after throwing a curve ball to Frank Robinson. It is a tear in his rotator cuff: he will throw just 2 more innings‚ his career over at 32. Dick Lange is the winning pitcher.  

1993: The Yankees-Brewers game at County Stadium is interrupted by some 100 seagulls who swoop down onto the field‚ apparently in search of moths hatching in the infield and outfield grass. The Yankees eventually win the game by a score of 5-4‚ winning in the 9th on a two-run pinch homer by Kevin Maas. While no players or seagulls are hurt‚ Wade Boggs calls the situation "terribly dangerous." The seagulls will return for tomorrow night's game‚ but the Brewers will be prepared for the birds. Gus the Wonder Dog‚ on loan from the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association‚ will keep them away.

2003: Houston Astros pitchers Roy Oswalt, Peter Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner combine for the first no-hitter against the Yankees in 45 years, winning 8-0, and stopping New York at 6,980 games with at least one hit. The Orioles' Hoyt Wilhelm accomplished the feat in 1958, 1-0. Houston's sextet also sets a record for the highest number of pitchers to participate in a no-hitter in major league history (there had been two no-hitters shared by four pitchers).

2010: Andy Pettitte records his 200th win in pinstripes in the Yankees' 4-3 win over the Astros at the Stadium. Whitey Ford (236) and Red Ruffing (231) are the only other members of this exclusive New York club.

On this day in Yankee history... 


1903: The Highlanders/Yankees make the first trade in franchise history as veteran infielders Herman Long and Ernie Courtney are shipped to Detroit in exchange for shortstop Kid Elberfeld, who has been suspended for abusing umpires. The trade is a good one for New York, as 'The Tabasco Kid'‚ currently hitting .341‚ will be a key element in the Highlanders' rise as contenders in 1904. Elberfeld had also been accused by Tiger manager Ed Barrow deliberately throwing games recently as a ploy to get himself traded. 

1921: Babe Ruth becomes the major leagues' career home run leader by hitting his 120th off Indians pitcher Jim Bagby in the 3rd inning of an 8-6 Cleveland win. Roger Connor held the record until today.

1922: In St. Louis‚ Babe Ruth's 2-run homer in the 3rd off Urban Shocker ties the game. Shocker then plunks Frank Baker, and a double‚ single‚ two errors on the same play‚ and a sacrifice fly score 4 more. Shocker then sends Yankee hurler Carl Mays sprawling on three straight pitches before walking him‚ and fires his first pitch right at Whitey Witt. The Yanks score 6 off Shocker and another 6 off relievers to win‚ 14-5. A foul fly in the 7th beans St. Louis owner Phil Ball, sitting behind the dugout. He has a slight concussion and requires four stitches.

1960: At the Stadium, Mickey Mantle belts his third homer in three days to spoil a good relief effort by Cleveland's Dick Stigman. The 8th-inning solo shot gives New York a 4-3 win.

1975: The Yankees sponsor Army Day at their temporary home‚ Shea Stadium. During a ceremonial 21-gun salute‚ glass is splintered‚ the park is filled with smoke‚ part of the fence is blown away‚ and another part is set afire. 

1977: Ron Guidry‚ with relief help‚ stops the Twins to give the Yankees a 4 - 1 win. Willie Randolph's two-run double is the key blow.

1978: The Yankees send former ace Ken Holtzman back to the Cubs, his first team‚ in exchange for minor leaguer Ron Davis. Holtzman proved a disappointment in New York‚ and he will not recapture his form in Chicago. Davis will blossom in 1979 when his 14-2 mark sets a record for most wins by a rookie reliever.   

1998: Tim Raines steals the 800th base of his career in the Yankees' 6-2 win over the Expos. He is the 5th player in history to reach that milestone. The Yanks lose Bernie Williams to the DL, though, when he injures his knee sliding.

2002: The Yankees best the Diamondbacks 7-5. On the first pitch he sees in the majors‚ New York rookie oufielder Marcus Thames hits a homer off fireballing left-hander Randy Johnson.

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1922: At Chicago‚ the Yankees use a courtesy runner against the White Sox. On a 2-out single to short‚ Wally Schang is injured in the 6th inning when he slides into first base‚ and is replaced by Al DeVormer. After the third out‚ Schang returns to catching. When Schang reaches base in the 8th‚ De Vormer again runs for him‚ this time staying in to catch.

1927: At the Stadium, the Yankees win for the third straight time over Chicago, 8-3. New York knock Ted Blankenship out of the box in the 7th and Ray Morehart hits reliever Bert Cole's first pitch for a 3-run homer. Babe Ruth follows with a triple and then steals home. The Yanks score 6 in the frame.

1933: In Philadelphia, Jimmie Foxx ties a major league record with another homer‚ his 5th in 3 games and his 12th of the year‚ but the A's bow to the Yankees 7-6. Lou Gehrig hits his 12th of the year and Tony Lazzeri hits a 3-run homer in the 8th to ice it. The sweltering heat in the east (NYC sets a heat record for the date with 97 degrees) causes both starters to end early; Jim Peterson leaves after walking the leadoff batter and after 5 innings Jumbo Brown collapses in the  dugout and has to be carried away.

1959: At the Stadium, the Yankees edge the Kansas City A's 9-8 in 13 innings. Mickey Mantle homers in the 4th off Murry Dickson, but it is Hector Lopez's single that wins it in the 13th.

1961: In a rain-interrupted game in New York‚ Mickey Mantle's 3-run homer in the 3rd is the difference in an 8-6 win over the Kansas City A's. Roger Maris also homers‚ the third time this year the two have gone deep in the same game.

2012: Phil Hughes betters Mets pitcher Dillon Gee by a 4-2 score. Derek Jeter passes Ted Williams on the all-time runs scored list when he crosses the plate with the game’s 1st run after advancing to second on a balk for his 1,800th career tally. A sixth-inning Mark Teixeira two-run homer makes the difference, and Curtis Granderson adds an insurance shot in the home eighth. ‬ ‪

On this day in Yankee history... 


1935: Lou Gehrig collides with Carl Reynolds of the Washington Senators on a play at first base and leaves the game with arm and shoulder injuries. His consecutive games streak is preserved, in part, by a rainout of the next day's game and a scheduled day off. 

1969: The Yankees retire uniform № 7 on Mickey Mantle Day at the Stadium. A crowd of 60,096 who have come out to honour Mantle watch the home team sweep a pair from the White Sox, 3-1 and 11-2.

1986: In the longest nine-inning game by time in AL history, the Orioles beat the Yankees 18-9.  The game features nine pitchers (including Yankee starter ~ and loser ~ Ed Whitson), 36 hits, and 16 walks, and takes 4:16 to complete.
