1920: The Yankees score 14 in the fifth and beat Washington 17-0. It is the biggest inning in major league history until the Red Sox tally 17 in a 1953 game.

1933: At Chicago's Comiskey Park, a 2-run homer by Babe Ruth makes the difference as the American League defeats the National League 4-2 in th first All Star Game ever played.

1941:  A center field monument dedicated to Lou Gehrig is unveiled by the Yankees at the Stadium. The memorial is a tribute by his teammates totheir beloved captain who died last month of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). 

1954: Willie Randolph is born. 

1962: The Yankees edge the Twins 7-5 in Bloomington, s Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris each hit a pair of home runs. The M&M boys go back to back in the 1st inning off Camilo Pascual (12-4), the third time in four games that Mickey has followed Roger out of the park. New York now trail Cleveland by half a game.

1966: Sad Sam Jones dies at the age of 73.

1990: In his first start since losing a no-hitter, Andy Hawkins gives the Yankees 11 2/3 innings of shutout ball, only to lose in the 12th to the Twin by a score of 2-0. Hawkins is now 1-6.

1996: During the Yankees' 2-0 win over the Brewers, the team announces the purchase of Darryl Strawberry's contract from Columbus. John Wetteland preserves Jimmy Key's win with a save in his 20th consecutive appearance, breaking Lee Smith's record.

2000: The Yankees clip the Orioles 13-9, scoring 8 runs in the 2nd inning to erase a 7-run deficit. Sidney Ponson helps by issuing 4 straight walks in the frame. Scott Brosius ties the major-league record for third basemen by starting four double plays in the game.

2010: Alex Rodriguez hits the 21st grand slam of his career and adds a solo homer to bring his career total to 597 long balls. The Yankees defeat the A's 6-1. CC Sabathia wins his 7th consecutive start to improve to 11-3 on the year. A-Rod's slam ties him with Manny Ramirez for second on the all-time list, two behind Lou Gehrig.

2011: The trial of Roger Clemens on charges of perjury in his testimony to Congress in February 2008 opens today in Washington, DC with jury selection. Among the witnesses which prosecutors are planning to call on are Commissioner Bud Selig, former Yankee manager Joe Torre, and former teammates Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada.  

July 5th

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1906: In Boston, the Red Sox commit 9 errors to help Highlander starter Bill Hogg to a 8-3 complete game win. 

1917:  At the Polo Grounds, Home Run Baker hits a 13th-inning inside-the-park homer off Walter Johnson to give the Yankees a 5-4 win. It is Baker's 5th career home run off the Big Train.

1934: Lou Gehrig hits an inside-the-park grand slam, as the Yankees beat the Senators 8-3. It is his 4th of the season and 17th overall, passing Babe Ruth's career total. Gehrig will eventually set a career record of 23 grand slams. Gehrig now has 321 career home runs to Ruth's 698.

1939: Yankee rookie pitcher Atley Donald wins his 10th game without a loss.

1950:  In a sloppy game that features 18 walks, Cliff Mapes drives in five runs with a homer and single to pace the Yankees to a 12-8 win over the A's. Tommy Byrne (9-3) is the winner despite giving up six hits and six walks in five innings (he walks two in the 6th). He also hits four batters to tie the major league record.

1951: Goose Gossage is born.

1998: Defeating the Orioles 1-0, the Yankees improve their record to 61-20, equalling the best 81-game start in major league history. The mark matches the record of the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates and the 1907 Chicago Cubs.

1904: Highlanders ace Jack Chesbro wins his 14th in a row, an AL record that will stand until Walter Johnson wins 16 straight in 1912.The Philadelphia A's are in the 9-3 losers.  

1930: George Steinbrenner is born. 

1932: Bill Dickey punches Carl Reynolds, breaking his jaw, after the Senator outfielder collides with him on a close play at home plate. The AL suspends the Yankee catcher for 30 days and fines him $1,000 for his one-punch fight.  

1938: John Sterling is born. 

1939: Today is Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day at Yankee Stadium, and the Iron Horse's uniform number 4 will be the first ever to be retired. After emcee Sid Mercer informs the sell-out crowd the man of the hour is too moved to speak, Gehrig changes his mind when Joe McCarthy encourages him, and delivers an impromptu keynote address describing himself as "the luckiest man on the face of the earth".

1959: Bob Turley  turns in another one hit gem against the Senators. A lazy fly in the 9th by pinch-hitter Julio Bcquer  drops in front of LF Norm Siebern for the only Washington safety. SS Tony Kubek goes 8 for 10 in the doubleheader, as the Yanks sweep, 10-6 and 7-0.

1960: Mickey Mantle's three-run 1st-inning home run off Hal Woodeshick is the 300th of his career. Mantle becomes the 18th player to join the 300 club, but the Yankees drop a 9-8 decision to the Senators.

1977: The Yankees stay a game ahead of the Red Sox by topping the Indians 7-5. The Bombers get home runs from Chris Chambliss, Roy White, Lou Piniella and Graig Nettles.

1983: Dave Righetti pitches the first Yankee no-hitter since Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series, handcuffing the Red Sox 4-0 before a holiday crowd of 41,077 at the Stadium. It is the first no-hitter by a Yankee lefty since George Mogridge in 1917.

1984: Phil Niekro strikes out Larry Parish of the Rangers to become the ninth major league player to reach the 3,000 strikeout milestone. The Yankees prevail 5-0.

July 3rd

On this day in Yankee history... 


1922: Bob Meusel hits for the cycle for the second time in his career to pace the Yankees to a 12-1 whipping of the Athletics. Meusel (below) and Babe Ruth go back-to-back in the 7th as Carl Mays cruises to his 22nd straight win over the Athletics.

1932: With the repeal of a Boston law restricting games within 1,000 feet of a church on Sundays, the first Sunday game is played at Fenway Park.The Yankees beat the Red Sox 13-2. RF Ben Chapman paces the New York attack with a triple and 3 RBI.

1960: Before 50,556 fans at the Stadium, the Yankees sweep two from the Tigers, winning 7-6 and 6-2.  In the opener, Ryne Duren fans Charlie Maxwell with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th. Detroit are ahead 2-1 in the nightcap when Norm Cash argues at length about a call at first base, and finally gets ejected. When play resumes, Pete Burnside serves up a 3-run homer to Mickey Mantle batting righty. The Yankees are 23-5 since June 5th, and lead the AL by three games.

1962: The Yankees swat 5 home runs ~ 2 each by Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, plus one by Bobby Richardson ~ and need them all to edge the A's 8-7. Mantle's second bomb, in the 8th, is the tie breaker.

1967: Brian Cashman is born. 

   

1977: Ron Guidry scatters six hits and tosses his second consecutive shutout, a 2-0 Yankee win over Detroit. Roy White breaks up the scoreless game with a double in the 8th inning.

1904: Highly-touted Highlanders rookie Walter Clarkson, considered one of the best pitchers in the college ranks in his days at Harvard, makes his major league debut. Clarkson, who also has two brothers in the majors, limits the Senators to eight hits, but the New York offense can manage only four, and Washington prevail 3-2. 

1912: Highlanders starter Russ Ford gives up two inside-the-park homers to Boston's Larry Gardner, but still prevails 9-7.

1931: Babe Ruth homers to drive in a run for the 11th consecutive game as the Yankees thrash the Tigers 13-1. The Bambino has collected 18 RBI during the string.

1941:  On a sweltering day in front of 52,832 fans at Yankee Stadium, Joe DiMaggio breaks Wee Willie Keeler's 1897 ML record hitting streak of 44 with a three-run homer off Red Sox hurler Dick Newsome.

1946: Before a Stadium crowd of 69,107, Spud Chandler walks nine Red Sox in the first 4 innings but takes a no-hitter into the 9th before Bobby Doerr hits a one-out single. The Yankees preserve a 2-1 win.

1961: The Yankees hit five homers, including numbers 29 and 30 by Roger Maris and number 28 by Mickey Mantle, to roll over the Senators 13-4.

1978: Ron Guidry wins his 13th consecutive game, the best start in Yankee history, in beating Detroit 3-2. With the Yankees down 2-0, Mickey Rivers' long drive to right is caught by a fan reaching down to take it away from Detroit's Mickey Stanley. The fan drops the ball and Stanley, waiting for an interference call, fails to retrieve it. Rivers motors for an inside-the-park homer, and New York tie the game at 2, eventually winning it.

2007: Roger Clemens allows two hits in eight innings against the Twins en route to his 350th win in the major leagues, a 5-1 Yankee victory at the Stadium. The last pitcher to reach 350 victories was Warren Spahn in 1963.

2011: The Mets' Jose Reyes, leading the major leagues with a .354 batting average, injures his hamstring in the 2nd inning of today's game with the Yankees and is headed for the DL at a time when trade rumors are swirling around the soon-to-be free agent. The Mets also lose the game 5-2, as Bartolo Colon wins in his first start since returning from a hamstring injury of his own. Curtis Granderson homers for the Yanks.

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1935: Yankee right fielder George Selkirk suggests that a cinder path 6 feet wide be installed in the outfield at the Stadium so that a player knows when he is nearing the wall.   

1941: Before 52,832 at the Stadium, Joe DiMaggio leads a sweep of the Red Sox, 7-2 and 9-2.  The second game is called after 5 innings. DiMaggio has 2 hits in the first game and one in the second to tie Willie Keller's league hitting streak of 44 games with the help of a difficult decision by the official scorer. Boston third baseman Jim Tabor makes a poor throw, but Joltin' Joe is given a hit by the New York World Telegram's Dan Daniel. The Yankees have 25 hits in the two games but fail to hit a home run in the first game, ending their streak of 25 consecutive games with at least one dinger. The previous record, set by the Tigers in 1940, was 17 games.

1950: At Fenway Park, Whitey Ford makes an inauspicious Yankee debut, allowing seven hits, six walks, and five earned runs over 4 2/3 innings of relief. The Red Sox roll 13-4, dropping the Bombers into 3rd place.

1951: Before 58,815 at the Stadium, the Yankees top the Red Sox 5-2 behind Eddie Lopat's 6-hitter. The win moves the Yankees ahead of the White Sox by percentage points. Jerry Coleman homers off Mel Parnell, while Johnny Pesky connects for the Sox. Bobby Doerr singles for his 2,000th career hit.

1956: Mickey Mantle switch-hits home runs in the same game for the fourth time in his career. The Yankees win 8-6 over the Washington Senators.

1961: The Senators stake rookie Carl Mathias to 3-0 lead over the Yankees, but a Mickey Mantle solo shot a few feet left of the 456-foot sign in left at the Stadium puts New York on the board. The Nats up the score to 5-1, but Mantle then bangs a 3-run homer to make it 5-4 and knock out Mathias, who in his 11 major league games will give up three homers to Mantle. In the  9th, Roger Maris launches a two-run homer, his 28th, to give the Bronx Bombers a 7-6 victory.

1964: Nearly 5,000 cabbies and their families are on hand for 'Taxi Day' at Yankee Stadium, but the visiting Kansas City A's run up the meter to win 5-4 in 11 innings .

1990: Andy Hawkins throws the season's 6th no-hitter, but still loses 4-0 to the White Sox. With two out in the bottom of the 8th, the Yankees' Mike Blowers misplays Sammy Sosa'svroutine grounder for an error, and Hawkins walks two to load the bases. Outfielders Jim Leyritz and Jesse Barfield drop back-to-back fly balls to allow all four runs to score. Barfield loses Ivan Calderon's fly ball in the sun and the ball bounces off his mitt. Ken Johnson of the Houston Colt .45s was the last ML pitcher to lose a no-hitter, in 1964.

2004: In the game of the year, the Yankees beat the Red Sox 5-4 in 13 innings. The score is tied at 3 after 9 innings and both teams have to wiggle their way out of many jams to keep it that way. In the 12th inning, the Red Sox place runners on second and third with two outs when Trot Nixon lifts a fly ball to shallow left field. Derek Jeter races out and catches the ball before diving headfirst into the stands and bloodying his face, forcing him to leave the game. In the top of the 13th inning, Manny Ramirez homers to give the Red Sox the lead, but the Yankees stage a two-out rally in the bottom half of the inning. Ruben Sierra singles, then comes around to score on Miguel Cairo's game-tying RBI double. Pinch hitter John Flaherty, the last man off the Yankees' bench, follows with a walkoff single to score Cairo.

2013: Andy Pettitte passes Whitey Ford for the most strikeouts in Yankee history when he records his 1,957th in the a 10-4 victory over the Twins. The win goes to reliever Joba Chamberlain, his first of the year, as he benefits from a three-run outburst off reliever Jared Burton in the 8th. The Yankees then add four runs in the top of the 9th as they end a five-game losing streak.
