On this day in Yankee history... 


1907:  The Highlanders swap pitcher Walter Clarkson and outfielder Frank Delahanty ~ both siblings of future Hall of Famers ~ to Cleveland for pitcher Earl Moore.  New York are hoping that Moore will return to the form he showed before a line drive injured his foot the previous season, limiting him to six games.

1927: Bob Meusel steals second base, third base, and home in the 3rd inning as the Yankees top the Tigers 6-2. Lou Gehrig contributes a homer and two doubles to back Dutch Ruether's pitching.

1928: Billy Martin is born. 

1932:  The Yankees record their fourth straight shutout to equal the record set by Cleveland and Boston in 1903 and 1906 respectively. Johnny Allen, George Pipgars, Red Ruffing and Lefty Gomez were the hurlers. Lefty stops the Indians on five hits to win, 8-0, New York's fifth shutout in seven games.

1941: Yankee manager Joe McCarthy benches top prospects Phil Rizzuto and Jerry Priddy, putting Joe Gordon and Frankie Crosetti back in the lineup. New York then rally in the 9th to beat the White Sox 5-4.

1951: Mickey Mantle drives in four runs and scores three as New York rout Cleveland 11-3. Mantle connects for the first of his 206 homers at Yankee Stadium, the blast coming off Dick Rozek.

1956: On a blustery day in Cleveland, the Yankees top the Indians 4-1. Mickey Mantle hits a homer off Bud Daley, while his pal Billy Martin is benched for the first time. Bobby Richardson takes his place at second base.

1957: The Yankees beat the Kansas City A's 3-0 behind Bob Turley's four-hit shutout. Mickey Mantle has a homer off Alex Kellner, the 11th time in his last 12 at-bats he has reached base safely. That night a group of Yankees celebrate Billy Martin's 29th birthday in raucous fashion. An ensuing fight at a Manhattan nightclub ~ soon to become infamous as the 'Battle of the Copacabana' ~ leads to $5,500 in fines and the eventual trade of Billy to Kansas City. Hank Bauer allegedly starts the brawl by hitting a patron, although Bauer denies it. The Yanks fine Bauer, Mantle, Martin, Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra $1,000 each and Johnny Kucks $500.

2010: The Twins stun the Yankees with an 8th-inning grand slam by Jason Kubel against Mariano Rivera for a 6-3 win at Yankee Stadium. Rivera had converted a record-tying 51 consecutive save opportunities at home and had not given up a grand slam since 2002; the runs are also the first he gives up this season.

 On this day in Yankee history... 


1922:  In a 6-1 win at the Polo Grounds, Ty Cobb beats out a grounder to Yankee SS Everett Scott. Veteran writer Fred Lieb scores it as a hit in the box score he files with the Associated Press. But official scorer John Kieran of the New York Tribune gives an error to Scott. At the season's end, the AL official records, based on AP box scores, list Cobb at .401. New York writers complain unsuccessfully, claiming it should be .399, based on the official scorer's stats. Lieb will reverse himself at the end of the year, but league president Ban Johnson goes with the hit call.

1935: Lou Gehrig steals home in a 4-0 Yankee win over the Tigers. It is his 15th and last steal of home, all of which were part of double steals.

1941: Joe DiMaggio gets a single in four at bats against Eddie Smith of the White Sox to start his 56-game hitting streak. The base hit goes unnoticed as the Bronx Bombers get bombed themselves, 13-1.

1955: Yankee outfielder Irv Noren hits an inside-the-park grand slam in an 8-4 victory over the A's to complete doubleheader sweep at the Stadium. Mickey Mantle is 4 for 9 for the afternoon and is hitting .311.

1963: With the Yankees down 3-0 to the Twins, Mickey Mantle hits a two-run homer off Pedro Ramos to put his club on the board. Mantle later scores the winning run as New York win 4-3.

1965: At Memorial Stadium, Mickey Mante slices an opposite field homer in the 8th inning off Dick Hall to give the Yankee a 3-2 win over the Orioles.

1996: The Yankees outbid four other American teams and sign Japanese pitcher Katsuhiro Maeda to a $1.5 million contract. The Yanks obtain the fastballer from the Sebu Lions for more than $350,000. Maeda, who has his hair dyed orange, was 0-2 with the Lions from 1993 through 1995 but refused to sign for the 1996 season unless he was traded to a U.S. team. 

2014: In his first major league outing, Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom does something no other member of the pitching staff has been able to do yet this season: get a hit. His 3rd-inning single off Chase Whitley of the Yankees breaks a record 0-for-64 drought by Mets pitchers at the plate this season. DeGrom, who had been an infielder his first two years in college before becoming a pitcher, also pitches very well, allowing 1 run in 7 innings, but is a hard-luck  1-0 loser, as Whitley, Dellin Betance, Adam Warren and David Robertson combine for a three-hit shutout. Whitley, who is also making his big league debut, gives up no runs in 4 2/3 innings and also collects his first hit, off deGrom.

1996: Dwight Gooden becomes the eighth pitcher in Yankee history to throw a no-hitter, in a 2-0 victory over the Mariners at the Stadium.

2010: After Twins manager Ron Gardenhire orders an intentional walk of Mark Teixeira and brings in righty Matt Guerrier to face Alex Rodriguez in the 7th, the Yankee third baseman blasts his 19th career grand slam to pass Frank Robinson for 7th place on the all-time career home run list and give New York an 8-4 win.

2011: Jorge Posada asks to be taken out of the line-up 40 minutes before the game, after being listed as the 9th-place hitter against the Red Sox. Hitting .165, the DH claims he has a bad back, something which Yankee GM Brian Cashman denies, and after the game explains that he feels "a little bit disrespected". With Andruw Jones taking Posada's place, the Yankees lose the game 6-0, with a two-run double by Jacoby Ellsbury and a three-run homer by Adrian Gonzalez against CC Sabathia providing the key blows in support of Josh Beckett's six scoreless innings. Jones hits 9th in the game, the second № 9 hitter in MLB history with 400+ homers to his credit ~ the only prior one was Jimmie Foxx, in his days as a pitcher at the tail end of his career.

2014: Masahiro Tanaka pitches his first major league shutout as the Yankees defeat the Mets 4-0. The Japanese off-season acquisition is now 6-0 with a 2.17 ERA after 8 starts in the majors. The Yankees' win follows 6 straight losses to the Mets, dating back to last season.

2017: The Yankees officially retire uniform number 2 in honour of Derek Jeter and unveil a plaque in his name in Monument Park between games of a doubleheader against the Astros. They win the opener 11-6 thanks to a bases-loaded triple by Chase Headley and homers by Starlin Castro, Aaron Judge and Brett Gardner. In the nitecap, Masahiro Tanaka gives up three 1st-inning homers, including a grand slam by Alex Bregman as New York go down 10-7. George Springer goes long twice for Houston, who lead 9-0 before the Yankees score some late runs to make the game appear closer than it is. Before the games, they place closer Aroldis Chapman on the disabled list with inflammation in his left shoulder.

1929: At Cleveland's League Park, the Indians defeat the Yankees 4-3 in the first game in major league history in which players from both teams wear numbers on the backs of their jerseys.

1955: At the Stadium, Mickey Mantle hits home runs from both sides of the plate for the first time in his major league career. The Yankee slugger finishes the game with three home runs ~ two left-handed and one right-handed ~ and drives in all of his team's runs in a 5-2 victory over the Tigers. Whitey Ford is the winning pitcher and Steve Gromek the loser.

1925: Yogi Berra is born. 

1959: At the Stadium, Yogi commits an error as his errorless streak of 148 games for a catcher comes to an end in a 7-6 Yankee loss to the Indians.

1978: At Royals Stadium, a potential game-ending routine fly ball becomes an Amos Otis walk-off inside the park home run as Reggie Jackson and Mickey Rivers collide in the outfield. The misplay turns a sure Goose Gossage save into a sour loss for the current World Champion Yankees.

May 11th

 On this day in Yankee history... 


1919: Washington Senators' ace Walter Johnson pitches 12 scoreless innings in a duel with Jack Quinn of the Yankees at the Polo Grounds. Johnson allows only two hits and retires the last 28 batters in a row before the game is called on account of darkness. Future NFL Hall of Fame coach George Halas, batting leadoff for the Yanks, goes 0 for 5, striking out twice.

1990: Dave Winfield rejects a trade that would have sent him from the Yankees to the California Angels in exchange for pitcher Mike Witt. A no-trade clause in Winfield's contract gives him the right to turn down the deal. Five days later, Winfield will reach an agreement with the Yankees and give his permission for the trade to take place. 

2006: Hideki Matsui breaks his left wrist and his consecutive games streak ends as the Red Sox beat the Yankees 5-3 at the Stadium. Going back to his days in Nippon Pro Baseball, he had appeared in 1,768 consecutive games. Matsui had played in 518 consecutive games (a record for the start of a career) since joining the Yankees in 2003 after playing in 1,250 straight for the Yomiuri Giants from August 22,1993 through 2002.

1913: The Yankees commit eight errors, but still end up beating the Tigers 10-9 in 10 innings. Three of the miscues are by SS Claud Derrick,  who will field just .872 for the year. In a move 10 days later that is perhaps related, the Yanks deal for SS Roger Peckinpaugh.

1926: At Yankee Stadium, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig hit back-to-back homers off Tiger starter Sam Gibson, and the homesiders outscore the Tigers 13-9. Herb Pennock is the winner.

1934: Lou Gehrig hits two home runs (one a grand slam) and a pair of doubles, tying the record with four long hits, and drives in seven runs, but leaves the game after five innings with a severe cold. The Bronx Bombers top the White Sox 13-3. During the game, Yankee LF Ben Chapman shouts racial slurs at a Jewish fan. In 1947, he will lead the dugout bigots in protest of Jackie Robinson.

1936: By beating the A's 7-2 at home, the Yankees move into first place and will remain there the rest of the season. Rookie Joe DiMaggio makes his belated home debut and hits his first home run, off George Turbeville. Lou Gehrig has four hits and two RBIs, while Johnny 'Grandma' Murphy, in his first start of the season, picks up the win.

1937: Monte Pearson pitches a one-hitter in topping the White Sox 6-0. Joe DiMaggio hits his first two homers of the year for the Yankees, and George Selkirk his fifth. Chicago's only hit is a one-out first inning single by Larry Rosenthal, who is erased on a double play.

1959: The Yankees sweep two from the Washington Senators at the Stadium, winning 6-3, and then 3-2 in 19 innings. Mickey Mantle's homer in the 3rd inning of the opener starts the Yanks scoring as they beat Chuck Stobbs. Mantle singles and scores the winning run in the 10th inning of the nitecap. Yogi Berra has a home run in the nitecap and sets a new major-league record for consecutive errorless games by a catcher with 148.

1996: David Cone undergoes surgery to remove an aneurysm in his pitching arm.   

2015: In action against the Orioles, Michael Pineda strikes out a career-high 16 batters in 7 innings in picking up a 6-2 win. The 16 K's are tied for second-most in Yankee history, and most by a right-hander, the team record being 18 by  Ron Guidry. The Orioles set team records for most strikeouts against one pitcher, and most in a game, as they whiff two more times in the final two innings to end up with 18.
