as the Highlanders roll up the St. Louis Browns 9-1 at Hilltop Park.
1951: Against
Cleveland's Early Wynn, Gene Woodling bangs out his 3rd homer off the
Tribe ace this year, as the Yankees win 2-0. Woodling went deep on Wynn
on June 24th, July 24th, and today. Mickey Mantle, making his first
appearance since his recall from the minors, goes 1 for 4.

1960: Despite
Roy Sievers' two homers and a double, the Yankees beat the White Sox
3-2, dropping Chicago 1 1/2 games off the pace and into a 2nd place tie

In a year in which Tigers ace Denny McLain wins 31 games, the Yankees
deal him one of only 6 losses, 2-1. The Bombers give Mel Stottlemyre 2
runs in the first inning, and the Yankee starter makes do with them for a
complete game 2-1 victory.

1977: Catfish Hunter notches
his final win of the year, an 11-1 four-hit victory over the Twins. The
Yankees support Hunter with homers from Roy White, Mickey Rivers, Chris

1989: Don Baylor ties a major league record when he is hit by a pitch for the 189th time in his career during a 4-3 Yankee win in Seattle.

2017:
A game between the Tigers and Yankees at Comerica Park is marred by a
series of brawls and eight ejections. Things start to get ugly in the
6th when Tommy Kahnle throws a pitch behind Miguel Cabrera's head.
Kahnle gets ejected, as does Joe Girardi who comes out to protest, and
Austin Romine and Cabrera after they get into a heated argument that see
the two
exchange blows and end up wrestling on the ground as both benches empty.
After both teams score three runs in the 7th, Dellin Betances hits
Detroit's James McCann with a fastball in the head, and Betances and
coach Rob Thomson are both tossed. In the 8th, the Tigers' Alex Wilson
plunks Todd Frazer and is ejected as well, along with skipper Brad
Ausmus. When the dust settles, the Tigers win the game, 10-6. Five
participants will receive suspensions as a result: 7 games for Cabrera
for inciting the initial brawl, 4 games for Wilson, 1 for Ausmus, 4
games for Gary Sanchez for throwing punches during the brawl, and 2 for
Romine.

1928: The Yankees pick up lefty Tom Zachary on waivers from the Washington Senators.
1930: The Yankees buy Frank Crosetti from
the San Francisco Seals but allow him to play another season in the
Pacific Coast League before reporting. The Yankees will make a similar
arrangement for Joe DiMaggio, buying him from the Seals but waiting a
year before bringing him to New York in 1936.
1942: Walter Johnson pitching to Babe Ruth is
the pregame attraction that draws 69,000 for the Yankees-Senators game
at the Stadium. Donated receipts provide $80,000 to the Army-Navy relief
fund. Ruth hits the fifth pitch
into the right-field stands, and then adds one more shot before circling
the bases. Sixteen relief games contribute $523,000 during the season.
1948: Ron Blomberg is born.

1964: The Yankees top
the Red Sox at Fenway 4-3, as Mickey Mantle starts the scoring with a
2-run homer in the 3rd inning off Earl Wilson. New York will now go a
tear, winning 26 of their last 33 games.

1968: Stan Bahnsen
outpitches Earl Wilson to give the host Yankees a 2-1 win over the
Tigers in the opening game of a doubleheader. The two teams then battle
for 19 innings, before the second game is suspended by curfew with the
score 3-3. The game will be finished tomorrow. In the long tie, Lindy
McDaniel retires 21 straight Tiger batters, six on strikeouts. In his
last three relief appearances, he has retired 30 batters in a row.

Rivers goes 5 for to lead the Yankees to an 8-3 victory over the White
Sox. Combined with a Red Sox loss, the win puts the Yankees in first

1999: The
Yankees score six runs in the 1st inning on their way to a 21-3 rout of
the Rangers. Scott Brosius and Joe Girardi ~ the 8th and 9th batters in
the New York lineup ~ drive in 13 of the Yankee runs. Derek Jeter
scores his 100th run of the year, the first Yank to string together four
straight seasons of 100+ runs since Mickey Mantle did it in nine straight campaigns (1953-61).

2011: With Alex Rodriguez back in the line-up for the first time since July 7th, the Yankees shut out the Twins 3-0. Curtis Granderson, who
has had no problem hitting the ball out of the park all year, keeps his
7th-inning hit within the confines, but races around the bases for an
inside the park home that doubles the Yankees' lead. Mark Teixeira follows with a more conventional round-tripper, and Ivan Nova improves to 13-4 on the year. A-Rod and Jim Thome become the first members of the 600 home run club to appear in the same game since Willie Mays and Hank Aaron in 1973.

he weakens in the 9th.

1964: On
the team bus following a 5-0 loss to the White Sox, Phil Linz begins to
play 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' on his harmonica. Manager Yogi Berra
orders Linz to stop, then slaps the instrument out of his hands when he
continues playing. The incident is reported as indicating dissension on
the club and Berra's lack of control, as well as saying something about
Linz's sense of humour.
1986: Dave Winfield hits his 300th career homer in a losing cause as the Yankees fall to the Mariners 5-2.

1940: Jimmy Powers, sports editor of the Sunday New York Daily News,
causes a flap when he suggests that the Yankees' poor play this season
can be attributed to 'a mass polio epidemic' contracted from Lou
Gehrig. The former Yankee first baseman and his roommate Bill Dickey
file suit; the newspaper will retract the story on September 26th and
apologize.
1950: A's lefty
Lou Brissie gives up just one Yankee hit in the last five innings, but
it's a critical one. With the score tied at 2 in the top of the ninth,
Joe DiMaggio bangs his 22nd home run of the year to give the third place
New
Yorkers a 3-2 win and hand the Connie Mack's boys their sixth straight
loss.

the continuation of the 'Pine Tar Game', Hal McRae strikes out for the
last Kansas City out and Dan Quisenberry retires the Yankee in order in
the bottom of the 9th to preserve the Royals' 5-4
victory. The conclusion takes just 12 minutes (and 16 pitches) and, as
the only game scheduled at the Stadium, is witnessed by a crowd of
1,245. Billy Martin puts a final twist on things by starting lefty Don
Mattingly at 2B, and Ron Guidry in CF.
1989: Dallas Green is
fired as manager of the Yankees and replaced by former SS Bucky Dent.
It is the 17th time the Yankees have changed managers since George
Steinbrenner bought the club in 1973. The 1978 postseason hero loses his
managerial debut to the Tigers in Detroit, 7-3.

1995: Phil Rizzuto announces his retirement as
a Yankee broadcaster after 39 years at the microphone, reportedly
because WPIX-TV refused to allow him to miss a game to attend former
teammate Mickey Mantle's funeral. Rizzuto eventually will return for the
1996 season.
2007: In a first in Major League history, a
player hits a home run off a pitcher who won a Cy Young Award before
the hitter was born. Roger Clemens is the hurler, Cameron Maybin of the
Tigers the young slugger.The Yankees still get the win, 5-2.
