1923:
Formal transfer of Yankee co-owner T.L. Huston's interest in the club
to Jacob Ruppert is completed for $1.5 million. Ten days later, Ruppert
buys two more sets of uniforms so that his players can wear a clean
outfit every day, an unprecedented move in the major leagues at the
time.
1930: Babe Ruth hits
three consecutive home runs in the first game of a doubleheader against
the A's, then batting against Jack Quinn in the 9th, Ruth decides to
hit right-handed. After two strikes, he
switches to lefty but strikes out. This is the first of two career
three-homer games for the Babe. Max Bishop draws five walks for the
second time in his career (he is the only player to do this twice), and
Jimmie Foxx homers to help the A's to a 15-7 victory. Ruth is homerless
in the second game, a 4-1 Yankee loss, but Bishop has three more walks.
Bishop will also walk eight times in a twinbill in 1934, the only player
to collect more than six walks in an afternoon.

1938:
The Yankee position players have a power outage, but Spud Chandler
supplies all the offense he needs, homering in the 8th to beat Thornton
Lee and White Sox 1-0.

Whitey Ford makes his final major league appearance. Mickey Mantle hits
his fifth homer in 6 games, but it is not enough to stave off a 9-4
defeat at the hands of the Tigers, who win their third consecutive game
from the Yankees.

1970: Clearly in a generous mood, Mel Stottlemyre hands
out 11 walks to Washington in 8 1/3 innings, but the Senators are
unable to score. Steve Hamilton gets the last two outs to preserve the
2-0 win. The 11 walks in a shutout ties the record set by Lefty Gomez,
who did complete his 1941 whitewashing. Danny Cater's two-run homer in
the 5th accounts for the scoring off Dick Such, making his first major
league start.

In his first return to Texas since signing with the Yankees, Alex
Rodriguez is roundly booed by fans at the Ballpark in Arlington. The
fans continue to show their displeasure as New York's third baseman
drives a 2-1 pitch over the fence during his 1st-inning at-bat. The Rangers will get the last laugh, however, winning the game 9-7.

2009: Joba Chamberlain is
knocked out of the game in the 1st inning with a bruised right knee
after being hit by a line drive off the bat of Adam Jones. The Yankees
still defeat the Orioles 7-4. as Robonson Cano drives in three runs.
Alfredo Aceves pitches 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Chamberlain
to earn the Bronx Bombers' 9th straight win.

2014: The Cubs' Jeff Samardzija, the ML ERA leader, pitches
7 scoreless innings against the Yankees, but Hector Rondon blows a 2-0
9th-inning lead to send the game into extras. In the 13th, Yankee
pitcher Preston Claiborne lays down a perfect sacrifice bunt in his
first major league plate appearance as part of a two-run rally, Jose
Veras throws a wild pitch to let in a first run and back-up catcher John
Ryan Murphy drives in another with a single as the Bronx Bombers end up
on top, 4-2. Samardzija is 0-4 in spite of a 1.46 ERA.

2006:
A uniform worn by Joe DiMaggio in his final World Series is sold for
$195,500 during the second day of an auction of his memorabilia. The
previous day, DiMaggio's 1947 AL MVP Award plaque was sold for $281,750,
which included a 15 percent buyer's
premium. It was his third MVP award, but it is the only plaque. The
two-day auction features more than 1,000 items of DiMaggio memorabilia,
also including a leather-bound album featuring autographs from
DiMaggio's Yankee teammates and members of the Red Sox, a typed note
signed by Frank Sinatra, and a signed photo of DiMaggio's former wife
Marilyn Monroe. The auction is held by Hunt's Auctions Inc. in NYC. A
portion of the proceeds will benefit the Joe DiMaggio Children's
Hospital in Hollywood, FL.

Curtis Granderson on the disabled list, while Marcus Thames and Nick
Swisher are both day-to-day because of a sprained ankle and a sore
biceps, respectively. The Rays take advantage of their banged-up
opponents, beating them 10-6 and increasing their lead in the AL East to
4 games.

Joe Torre returns to the Yankee dugout for the first time this season
season after being hospitalized for prostate cancer treatment. Don
Zimmer was managing the team in the interim. The Red Sox spoil the
occasion, however, by winning 6-3.

2011: In action at Camden Yards, the Yankees and the Orioles are
tied 1-1 in the 15th when the visitors score two runs off Mike
Gonzalez, who is then ejected for beaning Chris Dickerson, shattering
his batting helmet and sending him to the hospital. Out of pitchers, the
O's have to bring in the next day's scheduled starter, Jeremy Guthrie,
to complete the inning. Hector Noesi throws 4 scoreless innings to earn
the win in his major league debut; called up by the Yanks 16 days
earlier, he had yet to pitch before the marathon game forces Joe
Girardi's hand. Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the 15th, the Orioles then
put two runners on base, but Matt Wieters' ground ball, headed for
right field, just nips the foot of baserunner Brandon Snyder, who is
called out, snuffing the O's best chance to tie the game.

1998: David Wells pitches
the 13th perfect game in modern major league history as the Yankees
beat the Twins 4-0. Wells, whose 'perfecto' is the first by a Yankees
pitcher since Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series, also sets an AL
record by retiring 37 batters in a row, dating back to his start on May
12th against Kansas City. Minnesota shortstop Pat Meares flies out to
right fielder Paul O'Neill to complete the perfect afternoon at the
Stadium.

2010: Another
epic battle between the Yankees and the Red Sox at the Stadium ~ the
Yanks take a 5-0 lead in the 1st inning against Daisuke Matsuzaka, but
the Sox storm back to take the lead with five home runs, two by Victor
Martinez, and one each by David Ortiz, J.D. Drew and Kevin Youkilis.
Then, in the bottom of the 9th, Jonathan Papelbon gives up a pair of
two-run homers, to Alex Rodriguez and Marcus Thames, and the Yankees end
up on top 11-9.

Highlanders swap pitcher Walter Clarkson and outfielder Frank Delahanty
~ both siblings of future Hall of Famers ~ to Cleveland for pitcher
Earl Moore. New York are hoping that Moore will return to the form he
showed before a line drive injured his foot the previous season,
limiting him to six games.

1927: Bob Meusel steals second
base, third base, and home in the 3rd inning as the Yankees top the
Tigers 6-2. Lou Gehrig contributes a homer and two doubles to back Dutch
Ruether's pitching.

1928: Billy Martin is born.
1932: The
Yankees record their fourth straight shutout to equal the record set by
Cleveland and Boston in 1903 and 1906 respectively. Johnny Allen,
George Pipgars, Red Ruffing and Lefty Gomez were the hurlers. Lefty
stops the Indians on five hits to win, 8-0, New York's fifth shutout in
seven games.

a blustery day in Cleveland, the Yankees top the Indians 4-1. Mickey
Mantle hits a homer off Bud Daley, while his pal Billy Martin is benched

Yankees beat the Kansas City A's 3-0 behind Bob Turley's four-hit
shutout. Mickey Mantle has a homer off Alex Kellner, the 11th time in
his last 12 at-bats he has reached base safely. That night a group of
Yankees celebrate Billy Martin's 29th birthday in raucous fashion. An
ensuing fight at a Manhattan nightclub ~ soon to become infamous as the
'Battle of the Copacabana' ~ leads to $5,500 in fines and the eventual
trade of Billy to Kansas City. Hank Bauer allegedly starts the brawl by
hitting a patron, although Bauer denies it. The Yanks fine Bauer,
Mantle, Martin, Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra $1,000 each and Johnny Kucks
$500.

2010: The
Twins stun the Yankees with an 8th-inning grand slam by Jason Kubel
against Mariano Rivera for a 6-3 win at Yankee Stadium. Rivera had
converted a record-tying 51 consecutive save opportunities at home and
had not given up a grand slam since 2002; the runs are also the first he
gives up this season.

a 6-1 win at the Polo Grounds, Ty Cobb beats out a grounder to Yankee
SS Everett Scott. Veteran writer Fred Lieb scores it as a hit in the box
score he files with the Associated Press. But official scorer John Kieran of the New York Tribune gives
an error to Scott. At the season's end, the AL official records, based
on AP box scores, list Cobb at .401. New York writers complain
unsuccessfully, claiming it should be .399, based on the official
scorer's stats. Lieb will reverse himself at the end of the year, but
league president Ban Johnson goes with the hit call.

home in a 4-0 Yankee win over the Tigers. It is his 15th and last steal

1996: The
Yankees outbid four other American teams and sign Japanese pitcher
Katsuhiro Maeda to a $1.5 million contract. The Yanks obtain the
fastballer from the Sebu Lions for more than $350,000. Maeda, who has
his hair dyed orange, was 0-2 with the Lions from 1993 through 1995 but
refused to sign for the 1996 season unless he was traded to a U.S.
team.
2014: In
his first major league outing, Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom does something
no other member of the pitching staff has been able to do yet this
season: get a hit. His 3rd-inning single off Chase Whitley of the
Yankees breaks a record 0-for-64 drought by Mets pitchers at the plate
this season. DeGrom, who had been an infielder his first two years in
college before becoming a pitcher, also pitches very well, allowing 1
run in 7 innings, but is a hard-luck 1-0 loser, as Whitley, Dellin
Betance, Adam Warren and David Robertson combine for a three-hit
shutout. Whitley, who is also making his big league debut, gives up no
runs in 4 2/3 innings and also collects his first hit, off deGrom.
