1915: Philadelphia A's lefty Bruno Haas makes his ML debut against the Yankees a memorable one as he walks a
record 16 New Yorkers, and throws three wild pitches. He goes the
distance in a 15-7 loss, his only major league decision. Haas breaks the
AL mark of 15 walks, set by Boardwalk Brown, and ties Bill George's
major league record. Haas will pitch in just five more games before
ending up in the NFL as a halfback for Akron.

1927: At
Boston, Lou Gehrig leads the Yankees to an 11-4 victory by hitting
three home runs, a first at Fenway Park. Gehrig hits a two-run homer in
the 2nd, and solo shots in the 6th and 8th, off Danny MacFayden. He adds
a single to his total as Dutch Ruether coasts to the win.

1932: Lou Gehrig plays his 1,103rd consecutive game in a Yankee uniform, equaling Joe Sewell's record with one team (Cleveland).
1957: Prime
Minister Nobusuke Kishi of Japan, wearing a Yankee cap, is one of
63,787 fans at the Stadium to see New York split a doubleheader with
Chicago, winning the first game 9-2 and dropping the second 4-3. Mickey
Mantle goes 6 for 9 as the Yankees maintain their 1 1/2 game lead over
the White Sox. Mantle is leading the AL in hitting and homers and is one
behind the Senators' Roy Sievers in RBI.

the fifth time, replacing him with Lou Piniella. In 1985, Piniella was
fired and replaced by Martin. In 1987, Martin was fired and replaced by
Piniella. New York's 40-28 record is
the 4th best in the big leagues, but the Yankees have come off a
2-7 road trip.
1996: The Yankees complete a four-game sweep from the Indians in Cleveland for the first time since 1964.
1997: David Cone strikes
out 16, his highest total in six years, and Cecil Fielder hits a
three-run homer as the Yankees win 5-2. Cone, who had shoulder surgery
to repair an aneurysm in May, 1996, allows four hits, including homers
by Bob Hamelin and Damion Easley, in 8 innings of work.

2001: The
Yankees move to shore up their bullpen by getting Jay Witasick from the
Padres for infield prospect D'Angelo Jimenez. The Yanks' first choice,
Expos hurler Ugueth Urbina, failed a physical and will end up with the
Red Sox instead.

1930: Babe Ruth ties
a major league record by hitting five homers in two games and six
homers in three games. The Bambino hit three homers in the second game

1959: At
Kansas City, Mickey Mantle drives in six runs with a triple and two
homers to lead the Yankees to a 13-6 win. Moose Skowron adds his 4th
homer in four days to move New York to three games out of first place.

1961: Roger Maris leads
the Yankees to an 8-3 thrashing of the A's by belting his 27th homer of
the year. He adds two doubles and a single. Maris has now hit 20 homers
in the past 30 days (May 24th to today), to tie the mark set by Ralph
Kiner in 1947.

1965: Ray Barker's
major league record-tying second consecutive pinch hit home run is
wasted in a first-game, 6-2 Yankee loss to the A's. Mickey Mantle adds a
home run in the opener, but in the 4-2 nightcap win, he tries to score
from second base on a wild pitch and snaps an upper-thigh hamstring. He
will be out for three weeks. Ironically, the cover of the June 21st
issue of Sports Illustrated features Mantle with the prescient headline 'New York Yankees: End of an Era?'

into first place by eight percentage points over Baltimore, as they
outpitch the White Sox to take both ends of a doubleheader, 2-0 and 2-1.
Home runs by Mickey Mantle and Elston Howard win it for Jim Bouton in
the opener against Juan Pizarro, and an error wins the nightcap in the
17th. The Yankees sweep 4, giving
up just one run in 41 innings, and take nine games from Chicago in 11

After the Yankees win the opener of a doubleheader 9-3, Washington
Senators starter Bert Gallia hits three of the first four batters he
faces in the 1st inning of the
nightcap. Three more New York batters are plunked, by relievers Joe
Engel (2) and Tom Hughes (1), for a record six. The outcome is the same,
however, as the Yanks win again by a 9-3 score. New York leadoff hitter
Bert Daniels puts his name in the record book when he gets hit three
times.

1916: Tilly Walker's home
run over the LF wall is the only home run the Red Sox will hit at
Fenway Park this season, but it is the lone Boston score today as the
Yankees win 4-1. Inserted as a defensive replacement late in the game,
Boston shortstop Everett Scott starts a string of 1,307 consecutive
games, all played at short. He will end the streak as a Yankee on May 6,
1925. It will be the longest until Lou Gehrig surpasses it.

1934: The AL-leading Yankees sweep a pair from the Indians at the Stadium, 3-2 and 3-0. New
York tie the first game on Frank Crosetti's solo homer in the 8th off
Bob Weiland, then win it on Lou Gehrig's 18th in the 9th. Lefty Gomez,
in relief of Johnny Broaca, is the winner. In game 2, Hal Trosky's
single is the only hit off Red Ruffing, who also knocks in a run.

1946: A Fortune
magazine story gives some rare details of baseball finances, showing
the Yankees had a revenue of $1.6 million and profit of $306,000, cut to
$201,000
after minor league losses, the previous season. Of the gross income,
$896,000 is from home ticket sales.
1950: Joe DiMaggio gets
his 2,000th hit, a 7th-inning single off the Indians' Marino Pieretti
on the way to an 8-2 Yankee win. DiMaggio joins Luke Appling and Wally
Moses as the only active players with 2,000 or more hits. Eddie Lopat is
the winning pitcher, running his record against Cleveland to 25-6.

Detroit's Briggs Stadium, Mickey Mantle launches two Billy Hoeft
pitches into the bleachers in right center, something no other player
had done since the seats were built in the late 1930s. The Yankees win

1977: Reggie Jackson and Billy Martin become involved in a dugout confrontation at Fenway Park that is seen on national television. After Martin removes his right
fielder for loafing on a ball hit to the outfield, Jackson questions his
manager in the dugout. The two are eventually separated by coach Elston Howard.
2009:
The new Yankee Stadium has its first homerless game since th venue
opened in April. The Washington Nationals benefit from the power outage,
registering a 3-0 win.

2011: A
violent collision at home plate between Carlos Pena of the Cubs and
Yankee catcher Russell Martin is the highlight of the Yanks' 4-3 win.
With New York up 3-2 in the 6th inning, Geovany Soto hits a bases-loaded
line drive to left which Brett Gardner catches as he is charging; he
fires a one-hop strike to Martin, which arrives just before Pena crashes
into him, sending his helmet flying and the catcher rolling on the
ground. But Martin holds on for an inning-ending double play. A.J.
Burnett is the winner over Ryan Dempster, with Mariano Rivera picking up
the save.

an AL record for pitchers by recording 10 total bases. Ruffing hits two
home runs as part of a four-hit day, helping the Yankees to a 15-4
crushing of the Indians.

credited with a hit in his 30th consecutive game when an easy grounder
to shortstop Luke Appling bounces up and hits him on the shoulder. The

out 18 batters in a four-hit 4-0 shoutout of the California Angels,
setting an AL record for a left-handed pitcher in a single game. Guidry,

out 15 in the first six innings, posts his 11th consecutive victory.
The performance will help coin a new nickname for Guidry
as announcer Phil Rizzuto begins to refer to him as 'Louisiana
Lightning'. A new
Yankees tradition is also born as the fans begin to clap rhythmically

a bid for a no-hitter until Christian Yelich of the Marlins leads off
