1904:
Before 1,522 at Hilltop Park, in New York, veteran Al Orth makes his
first start for the Highlanders and matches zeroes with Chicago's Yip
Owen. In the bottom of the 9th, Patsy Dougherty leads off with a triple
and scores on Willie Keeler's bouncer through the infield.
1908: With
the Highlanders leading the Tigers 3-2 in the 8th, Detroit score two
runs on a Ty Cobb triple. With lefty Claude Rossman, newly appointed New
York manager Kid Elberfeld has righty pitcher Jack Chesbro nd first
baseman Hal Chase swap places. Chase allows a fly ball that scores Cobb,
then goes back to 1B and Chesbro resumes his spot on
the mound. It is Chase's only pitching career appearance. The juggling
act will be for naught, though, as the Tigers win, 5-3.

1939: Yankee freshman Atley Donald sets
the AL rookie record for consecutive wins. 'Swampy., as he is known in
the clubhouse, beats the Browns 5-1 for his 12th straight victory.

1948:
In the tight four-team AL race, Joe DiMaggio leads the Yankees to a
sweep over the White Sox, 5-3 and 7-3. Joe D goes 3 for 3 in the first
game to back Ed Lopat, then adds a triple and two doubles in the
nitecap. His three RBI in game two gives him an AL-high 86.

1955: Joe DiMaggio is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
1959: In
action against Detroit, Yankee first baseman Moose Skowron, reaching
for a wide throw, collides with Tiger runner Coot Veal. Skowron's arm is
broken in two places and he is out for the rest of the season. Marv
Throneberry will fill in at 1B. The Yanks win 9-8 when Yogi Berra hits a
home run in the 9th with Mickey Mantle aboard. Prior to the Yogi homer,
Bobby Richardson and Fritz Brickell hit their first major round
trippers for New York. Berra's blast erases five Yankee errors, three by
third baseman Hector Lopez.

1961:
With his four-home run performance in a doubleheader sweep of the White
Sox, Roger Maris moves 25 games ahead of Babe Ruth's 1927 pace. The
Yankee slugger now has 40 for the year. Mickey Mantle also homers off
Frank Baumann in the first game. He ends the day with 38 home runs.

Ron Guidry gets new Yankee manager Bob Lemon off to a good start,
striking out 8 and scattering 6 hits on his way to a 4-0 complete game

1995: Randy Velarde collects five hits in New York's 8-1 win over the Kansas City. The Yankee second baseman's hits include four singles and a home run.

1998: Former
Yankee pitcher Jim Bouton makes his first appearance at the Stadium
since 1970 at Oldtimers Day and is greeted with cheers all around.
Bouton had been persona non grata in New York since writing Ball Four, which broke a long-standing taboo in sports by taking readers into the
locker room and revealing players' extracurricular escapades. The Yanks
invited the Bulldog back after his son wrote a Father's Day article in
the New York Times suggesting it.
2011: The
Yankees extend the Mariners' franchise-worst losing streak to 16 games
with a 10-3 win in New York. Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira homer and
have three RBI each.

2015: Alex Rodriguez continues
his remarkable comeback season by hitting three homers in an 8-5 Yankee
win over Twins. His third long ball ties the score against closer Glen
Perkins in the 9th, and John Ryan Murphy follows with a three-run
game-winning shot.

2016: In
a rare development, the Yankees are sellers at the trading deadline as
they send Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs in return for a rich package of
prospects that includes outfielders Rashad Crawford and Billy McKinney,
infielder Gleyber Torres and pitcher Adam Warren. The Yankees were
dealing from a position of strength, with two other top-class relievers
on hand in Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances, while Chapman is headed
for free agency after the season.
2017: In
his first plate appearance at home as a member of the Yankees, Todd
Frazier hits into one of the rarest plays in baseball: a triple play
that scores a run. Batting with the bases loaded and no one out in the
2nd, he hits a hard grounder to shortstop Jose Peraza, who steps on
second and throws to first for the first two outs. Meanwhile, Didi
Gregorius, who was on second base, freezes up between second and third,
thinking Peraza may catch the ball on the fly. First baseman Joey Votto
throws to third and catches Gregorius in a rundown. He is called out for
leaving the baseline, but not before Matt Holliday has crossed the
plate. Because the final out was not the result of a force out, the run
stands. The Yankees go on to beat the Reds 4-2.

1926: Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth demonstrate
that power hitting is not the only thing they can do when Lou scores on
a double steal with the Babe in a victory over the White Sox. They had
pulled the same double steal against the Red Sox on April 13th.

1934: Earle
Combs crashes into the outfield wall at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis
and suffers a fractured skull. The Yankees call up George Selkirk but
learns he broke his arm the same day playing for Newark.
1966: The
Yankees beat the Angels 9-1, as Mickey Mantle hits his second homer in
two days. The round-tripper, his 493rd, ties him with Lou Gehrig for
6th place on the all-time list.

1991: In a 10-2 romp over the Mariners, the
Yankees score three runs on a ground ball hit back to the pitcher. With
runners on second and third base and one out in the 4th, Pat Kelly hits
a comebacker to Erik Hanson. The Seattle hurler traps Kevin Maas in a
rundown between third and home, but Maas scores when third baseman Edgar
Martinez's throw hits him in the back. The ball rolls up the first base
line in foul territory, where it is recovered by catcher Dave Cochrane.
The backstop throws home to head off Alvaro Espinoza who is also
attempting to score. The throw goes into the Mariners' dugout, allowing
Espinoza and Kelly to cross the plate with the second and third runs.

1999:
The Yankees hammer the Indians 21-1. The Bronx Bombers are led by DH
Chili Davis, who bangs out five hits, including a double and homer,
while driving in six runs.

2004: Another
saga is added to the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry as a bench-clearing brawl
breaks out after Sox starter Bronson Arroyo hits Alex Rodriguez, who hit
the game-winning home run the previous night, with a pitch.

2012: Seattle's Felix Hernandez breaks
Alex Rodriguez's hand with a pitch in the 8th inning of a 4-2 win over
the Yankees. The Yanks make history, however, by becoming the first
team since the 1927 Philadelphia A's to have three players with 2,500+
career hits in the starting lineup. New York uses Rodriguez, Derek Jeter
and newly-acquired Ichiro Suzuki to pull it off.

Yankees start planning for the World Series when they pick up third
baseman Joe Dugan and one-time Cleveland World Series hero Elmer Smith
from Boston, giving up outfielder Elmer Miller, shortstop Chick Fewsterm
shortstop Johnny Mitchell, and, later, pitcher Lefty O'Doul. The
contending Browns and other clubs howl in protest and this deal will
lead to a rule barring non-waiver trades after June 15th.
1925: Lou Gehrig hits the first of his 23 career grand slams in an 11-7 win over the Washington Senators.

1978: Reggie Jackson returns
to the team and the Yankees win their 5th straight, 3-1 over the White
Sox. At the Chicago airport, Billy Martin, reacting to reporters'
questions about Jackson and George Steinbrenner, replies: "The two
deserve each other. One's a born liar, the other's
convicted." The remarks will cost Billy his job. The next day, Martin
resigns under pressure, giving way to Bob Lemon after a one-game interim
by Dick Howser.
2012:
The Yankees acquire Ichiro Suzuki frlom the Mariners in exchange for
minor league pitchers D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. Hours
after the trade, Ichiro singles off Kevin Millwood in his first at-bat
as a Yankee in a 4-1 win against his former team. Hiroki Kuroda is the
winner while Alex Rodriguez hits his 15th homer of the season.

players in an effort to get more power in the Yankee lineup. Phil
Rizzuto plays second base and Mickey Mantle plays shortstop, the
