1920: In the first game of a twinbill, Babe Ruth hits his 50th home run in the 1st inning, off the Senators' Jose Acosta. He then adds number 51 in the second game, going 4 for 4 in 2-1 win to give the Yankees a split. The other three hits off loser Jim Shaw are by Del Pratt (below).

1927: The Yankees win their 106th game, a 6-0 whitewash of Detroit, for a new AL season high. They will go on to win 110, a record until the 1954 Indians win 111.

1929: Tom Zachary bests the Red Sox 5-3 to raise his record to 12-0. He also sets a major league record for most wins without a loss in a season that still stands.

1932: In a battle of Boston graduates, Harvard beats Boston College. Charlie Devens, former Harvard hurler, makes his major league debut for the Yankees and beats the Red Sox. The loss goes to Ed Gallagher, former BC pitcher who exits in the 5th. Babe Ruth swats his 41st homer of the year in the 9th and Lou Gehrig belts his 34th in the 5th.

1950: 66,924 fans are on hand for Johnny Mize Day at the Stadium, as the Yankees top the fading Red Sox 9-5 to go 4 games up on Boston and 2 1/2 ahead of Detroit. Phil Rizzuto contributes a single, double, and a home run, while Yogi Berra adds 4 hits, including a triple. Joe DiMaggio's hit streak reaches 15. New York will win 5 of their next 7, while the Tigers will only manage to go 4-3.

1957: The idle Yankees clinch their 23rd pennant and 8th under Casey Stengel, as the A's tip the White Sox 6-5.   

1972: In the nitecap of a twinbill sweep of the Indians, Sparky Lyle sets an AL record and ties the major league mark by saving his his 35th game. The Yankees win 8-3, after notching a 5-4 win in the opener when they score two unearned runs on five Indian errors in the 11th. Thurman Munson steals second base by kicking the ball out of Frank Duffy's glove and going to third on the error. Duffy then boots a grounder and throws wildly for two more miscues. Catcher Gerry Moses then picks up a squibber and fires over 1B and RF Del Unser's throw to the plate is over Moses' head for error number 5.

1978: Ron Guidry (23-3) tosses his third two-hit shutout of the month, 4-0 over the Indians.  The two Tribe safeties are by Duane Kuiper, the second time this year that he has recorded the only hits in a game. The Yankee ace also two-hitted the Red Sox on September 9th (7-0) and the 15th (4-0). It is Guidry's 9th shutout of the year, a Yankee record, and just one short of the AL record for southpaws set by Boston lefty Babe Ruth in 1916. The Red Sox stay one game back of New York by topping Toronto 7-6.

2002: Thanks to Jason's two home runs in the Yankees' 6-0 blanking of the Devil Rays, the Giambi brothers (Jason 40 and Jeremy 20) pass the DiMaggio siblings for the highest single-season total for homers with 60. The DiMaggios ( Joe 46 and Vince 13) went yard 59 times in 1937.

 On this day in Yankee history... 


1910: George Stallings, convinced that Hal Chase tried to throw a game but unable to make the charge stick, is replaced by his charismatic first sacker as manager of the 2nd-place Highlanders for the season's final 11 games. On his own, Prince Hal will lead the New Yorkers downhill to 6th place in 1911.  

1921: Trailing the Yankees by percentage points, the Indians come to New York for a four-game showdown. Waite Hoyt's arms and Babe Ruth's three doubles beat them in the opener 4-2.

1933: The Yankees make seven errors, three by Frank Crosetti, but have enough firepower to outslug the Red Sox 16-12. Including in New York's 23 hits are homers by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, No. 31 for each; Lou adds two doubles and a single. Sammy Byrd, Ben Chapman and Crosetti have three hits apiece, and reliever Wilcy Moore drives in the last run with his first hit of the year. The Red Sox chase winning pitcher Herb Pennock in the 6th and close the gap to 13-9, but fall short at the end.

1937: Even though they lose to the Browns 9-5, the Yankees back into their second straight pennant when the Red Sox beat the Tigers. 

1950: The Yankees, tied for first place with the Tigers and only two games ahead of the Red Sox, open a crucial series with Boston at the Stadium. Joe DiMaggio's 1st inning home run off Mel Parnell is all the scoring needed, as the Bombers roll 8-0. Ed Lopat scatters five hits, including a leadoff triple to Dom DiMaggio.

1955: The Yankees clinch their 21st pennant with a 3-2 win over the Red Sox.

1961: An ailing Mickey Mantle hits his career high 54th (and last) home run of the season, and Whitey Ford leaves after the 5th inning but wins his 25th as the Yankees down the Red Sox 8-3.

1964: In twinbill action, the red-hot Yankees win their  8th and 9th in a row, defeating the Indians 4-3 in 11 innings and then 6-4 in the second game. Elston Howard's homer off Luis Tiant snaps a tie in the opener. John Romano homers in each game for the Indians, while recently-acquired Pedro Ramos finishes up both games for New York. Ramos, however, will not be eligible for the World Series.

1985: Joba Chamberlain is born. 

 









1998: With an 8-4 victory over the Indians, the Yankees tie the 1927 team for the most wins in franchise history. The Bombers' 110 victories pull them within one game of the AL record of 111 victories set by the 1954 Cleveland Indians.

1999: By drawing 27,549 fans, the Yankees break the NYC season attendance record with a total of 3,072,009. The Mets had previously held the record when 3,047,724 turned the turnstiles at Shea in 1988.  

2001: By saving a 5-4, 10-inning win over the Orioles at Camden Yards, Mariano Rivera establishes a franchise single-season record with his 47th save. The previous record was held by Dave Righetti, who notched 46 saves in 1986.

1920: Bob Lemon is born. 

2003: Alfonso Soriano breaks a major league season record by hitting his 13th leadoff homer of the year, in a 10-inning loss to the White Sox. 

2009: The Yankees are the first team to clinch a playoff spot this year after a 6-5 win over the Angels. Alex Rodriguez drives in Brett Gardner on a sacrifice fly in the 9th; he has a homer and 3 RBI in the game. Mariano Rivera pitches a scoreless 9th inning for the save.

2012: The Yankees win a wild extra-innings game against the A's at the Stadium to stay one game ahead of the Orioles in the AL East race. Oakland go ahead 9-5 in the 13th on three home runs, but the Yankees come back to tie and then win it in the bottom of the 14th when Ichiro Suzuki scores on a misplayed ground ball off the bat of Eduardo Núñez.

 On this day in Yankee history... 


1906: At Chicago, the White Sox lose a pair to the Highlanders before 20,000, their largest Friday afternoon crowd of the year. Hal Chase has 22 putouts at first base for New York in the first game, tying the major league record. 

 

1923: Babe Ruth is the unanimous choice of sportswriters as AL MVP. 

 

1956: In action at Fenway, Mickey Mantle hits a 480 ft. home run to straightaway center, and Bill Skowron has 5 hits. Unfortunately, the Yankees set an unenviable ML record by leaving 20 men on base, and lose to the Red Sox 13-9.

1963: Yogi Berra hits his 358th and final career home run in a losing cause, as the Yankees fall to the A's 5-3.

2002: Andy Pettitte gets the 3-2 win in Detroit as the Yankees clinch their fifth consecutive AL East title.

2008: In the last game ever played at the old Stadium, the Yankees defeat the Orioles 7-3. Andy Pettitte earns his 14th win of the season, while Johnny Damon and José Molina hit home runs. Mariano Rivera closes out the game with a perfect 9th inning, forcing Brian Roberts to ground out to 1B Cody Ransom for the last out. New York thus avoid being eliminated from the playoffs in their final game at the historic stadium.

2014: Brett Gardner hits the 15,000th home run in Yankee history off Toronto's Drew Hutchison in the 5th inning of a 5-2 New York win. The total dates back to the team's first season in NYC in 1903 and is the most of any major league franchise. Masahiro Tanaka is the winner in his return to the mound after a ten-week layoff.

1931: Lou Gehrig drives in four runs to break his old AL RBI mark of 175, set in 1927. By the season's end he will have a total of 184.

1958: At Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, the Yankees are no-hit for the last time in the 20th century, by knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm.

1961: The 155th Yankees game of the season (including a tie) is Roger Maris' last chance to beat the 60 home run mark set by Babe Ruth in compliance with Commissioner Ford Frick's statement that in order for the record to be broken, Maris must do it in the same number of games as Ruth. Maris' 59th home run of the year, off Jack Fisher, is short of the record, but helps the Yankees beat the Orioles 4-2 to clinch their 26th AL pennant.

1968: Mickey Mantle hits the 536th and final home run of his ML career, a solo shot against Jim Lonborg of the Red Sox in a 4-3 loss at the Stadium.

1980: A bronze plaque in Monument Park is dedicated to the late Thurman Munson. 

1998: Cal Ripken Jr. takes himself out of the starting lineup and does not play in the Orioles' loss to the Yankees, ending his consecutive games played streak at 2,632. After nearly 16 years, Ripken says he decided the time was right to end the streak, which began on May 30, 1982. 

2012: Ichiro Suzuki continues his hot hitting, as he homers off Aaron Laffey in the 3rd to open the Yankees' account, then hits a two-run double in a seven-run 4th inning, leading the Yankees to a 10-7 win over the Blue Jays. Nick Swisher adds a grand slam during the big outburst, as the Bronx Bombers move one full game ahead of the idle Orioles in the AL East race.

2013: Breaking a 1-1 tie in the 7th, Alex Rodriguez hits a grand slam off George Kontos of the Giants for a 5-1 win. It is the 24th slam of A-Rod's career, breaking a tie with Lou Gehrig for most ever in the major leagues.

1920: The Premiere of Babe Ruth's movie Headin' Home is held at Madison Square Garden. 

1926: At Cleveland's League Park, a crowd of 31,000 watch the Yankees turn back the Indians 8-3 in the final of a six-game series. In the 7th, Babe Ruth slams his 43rd homer of the year and Lou Gehrig follows with another home run, both off Emil Levsen. Gehrig adds three doubles and five RBIs to lead the Yankee attack. Dutch Ruether picks up the win for New York.

1930: Bob Turley is born.

1951: The Yankees are victorious when Mickey Mantle hits a three-run homer off Chicago's Lou Kretlow for a 5-3 final. A small crowd of 12,127 watch the game at the Stadium. 1964: The Yankees move a half game ahead of the rained-out Orioles by beating the A's 8-3. Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris homer, and Ralph Terry pitches effectively in relief of Al Downing.

1966: Dan Topping sells his 10 percent stock interest in the Yankees to CBS and resigns as club president. CBS executive Mike Burke (below) succeeds him.

1968: Denny McLain's 31st win is overshadowed by Mickey Mantle's 535th homer. McLain allegedly calls catcher Jim Price out and tells him to inform Mantle he's throwing the slugger nothing but fastballs. The home run gives Mantle undisputed hold of 3rd place on the all-time list. Mantle tips his cap to Denny as he rounds third base. Joe Pepitone, the next batter, signals where he would like the ball, and McLain knocks him down with the first pitch. The Tigers win the game 6-2.

1976: Catfish Hunter notches his 200th career victory as the Yankees stop the Brewers 2-1. Since 1901, only Christy Mathewson and Grover Cleveland Alexander have hit the 200 mark before their 31st birthday, but arm trouble will limit Hunter to 224 wins. He will win 17 this year, after five straight 20-win seasons.

2011: Mariano Rivera throws a perfect 9th inning in the Yankees' 6-4 win over the Twins, striking out rookie Chris Parmelee for the final out, to record the 602nd save of his career. He passes Trevor Hoffman for the all-time lead in the category.
