1928: Whitey Ford is born.                                     

1934: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Lefty Gomez are among the members of an All-Star team headed by Connie Mack that set sail for Japan. 

1998: The Yankees close out their historic season with a 3-0 win against the Padres, sweeping San Diego in four games to take their 24th World Series championship. Andy Pettitte gets the W, and Scott Brosius is named Series MVP.  The Game 4 victory gives the Yankees 125 wins against 50 losses for a .714 winning percentage, the best in the majors since their Murderers' Row club of 1927, as their AL record of 114 regular-season victories were the most ever for a major league champion team.

2000: In Game 1 of the World Series, the Yankees defeat the Mets 4-3 in 12 innings. The longest game in Series history (4 hours, 51 minutes) is ended on Jose Vizcaino's single which drives home Tino Martinez. It is Vizcaino's fourth hit of the night. The Mets lead 3-2 going into the 9th, but reliever Armando Benitez surrenders the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Chuck Knoblauch. The victory is the Yankees' 13th in a row in Series play, a new record.

2001: The Yankees take a 3-1 lead in their ALCS matchup with the Mariners, defeating Seattle by a score of 3-1. Bret Boone's 8th-inning home run breaks a scoreless tie, but Bernie Williams hits a home run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score. New York win on Alfonso Soriano's two-run homer in the 9th and Mariano Rivera gets the victory in relief.

2003: At Pro Player Stadium, the Yankees defeat the Florida Marlins 6-1 in Game 3 of the World Series. Aaron Boone and Bernie Williams hit home runs for the Yankees, as Mike Mussina gets the win with relief help from Mariano Rivera. The Yankees lead the Series, 2-1.

  On this day in Yankee history... 

1910: Bob Sheppard is born. 

1931: Mickey Mantle is born. 

1951: Joe DiMaggio departs with Lefty O'Doul's All-Stars for a tour of Japan. They will win 13 of 15 games played.  

1960: Yankee bench coach Ralph Houk is named to succeed Casey Stengel as manager. He briefly led the team during the season when Stengel was hospitalized. 

2009: The Yankees take a 3-1 lead in the ALCS by crushing the Angels 10-1 in Anaheim. Alex Rodriguez continues his red-hot hitting with a two-run homer off Jason Bulger in the 5th inning, giving him an RBI in 8 consecutive postseason contests.

October 19th

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1946: The Yankees acquire pitcher Allie Reynolds from the Indians for former AL MVP Joe Gordon and third baseman Eddie Bockman. Reynolds has struggled with Cleveland, losing 15 of 16 decisions during the season. He will reverse his fortunes in 1947, winning 19 games for the World Series champion Yanks.   

1986: George Pipgras dies at the age of 86. 

1987: Billy Martin is named manager of the Yankees for the fifth time, replacing Lou Piniella, who replaced Martin and is moved to general manager. Piniella led the Yankees to an 89-73 record in 1987, fourth in the AL East.  

1992: Atley Donald dies at the age of 82.

 On this day in Yankee history... 


1931: Andy Carey is born. 

1960: Instituting a mandatory retirement age of 65, Yankees co-owners Dan Topping and Del Webb relieve manager Casey Stengel of his duties. He posted a 1,149-696 record for the club, including 10 AL pennants and seven World Championships. 

1977: Reggie Jackson becomes known as 'Mr. October' after he hits three consecutive home runs on as many pitches in Game 6 of the World Series. Jackson leads the Yankees to an 8-4 victory and the World Championship over the Dodgers.

2007: Joe Torre is out after 12 seasons as manager of the Yankees when he refuses to take a large pay cut to return in 2008. The team have reached the postseason in all of Torre's seasons at the helm. 

2017: The Yankees win their third straight game in the ALCS to take a 3 games to 2 lead over the Astros. Masahiro Tanaka baffles the Houston hitters over 7 innings, giving up just 3 hits and a walk, while the Yankees take the lead in the 2nd on an RBI single by Greg Bird and keep adding to it until finishing with a 5-0 win.

1908: Red Rolfe is born.

1964: Despite having finished with a 99-63 record, the Yankees fire manager Yogi Berra after losing the World Series to the Cardinals in seven games. St. Louis skipper Johnny Keane resigns unexpectedly. He will take the Yankee job, which opens after the firing of Berra. 

1978: The Yankees win their fourth straight game over the Dodgers 7-2 to clinch their second consecutive World Championship. Brian Doyle and Series MVP Bucky Dent have three hits apiece.

1985: Lou Piniella is named manager of the Yankees, replacing Billy Martin, who had piloted New York to second place with a 91-54 record. 

2000: In a come-from-behind 9-7 victory over the Mariners,  David Justice propels the Yankees with a three-run home run to their record 37th AL pennant, setting up a Subway Series in NYC for the first time in 44 years.

2003:  Early editions of the New York Post include an editorial claiming the Yankees lost to the Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS played yesterday. Although New York trailed the Red Sox early, the team rallied to beat their arch rival 6-5 in 11 innings. 

2009: The Yankees take a 2-0 lead over the Angels in the ALCS by winning a 13-inning marathon 4-3 at the Stadium. Alex Rodriguez homers off Brian Fuentes in the bottom of the 11th to tie the game, and the winning run scores when Maicer Izturis throws the ball away while trying to start an inning-ending double play, allowing Jerry Hairston Jr. to score from second.

2017: The Yankees even the ALCS with a 6-4 win over the Astros in Game 4. The Astros head into the bottom of the 7th leading 4-0, thanks in part to a bases-clearing double by Yuli Gurriel, but Aaron Judge gets the Yankees on the scoreboard with a huge homer, then adds a run-scoring double that ties the game in a four-run 8th inning during which New York bats around against three Houston relievers. Gary Sanchez drives in three runs for the Bombers.

October 16th

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1921:  In defiance of a Kenesaw Mountain Landis ban on World Series participants playing post-season exhibitions, Babe Ruth, Bob Meusel and Bill Piercy launch a barnstorming tour in Buffalo. Five days later, they cut it short in Scranton. In the meantime Ruth openly challenges Judge Landis to act. The judge does, fining the players their World Series shares ($3,362.26), and suspending them until May 20th of the following season. 

1923: Soon after Babe Ruth receives his World Series winner's share of $6,160.46, insurance agent Harry Heilmann, who beat Ruth for the batting title by 10 points, sells him a $50,000 life insurance policy. Beneficiaries are Mrs. Ruth and adopted daughter Dorothy. 

1936: Lou Gehrig, who hit .354 with 49 home runs, 167 runs, and 152 RBI, is voted AL MVP.  

1962: With the tying and winning runs in scoring position, Willie McCovey of the Giants hits a hard line drive directly at second baseman Bobby Richardson for the final out, and the Yankees win Game 7 by a score of 1-0 for their 20th World Series title.

2009: The Yankees take Game 1 of the ALCS with a 4-1 win over the Angels at the Stadium. The Yanks take advantage of three Angel errors to score their runs, but the critical play is a two-out pop-up that falls untouched between 3B Chone Figgins and SS Erick Aybar in the 1st, allowing Johnny Damon to score the home team's second run. CC Sabathia pitches 8 innings for the win and Mariano Rivera gets the save.

2017:  The Yankees notch their first win in the ALCS by defeating the Astros 8-1 in Game 3 at home. Three-run homers by Todd Frazier and Aaron Judge help New York build an 8-0 lead by the end of the 4th, and they cruise from there as CC Sabathia is the winner over Charlie Morton.

October 15th

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1923: The Yankees score five runs in the 8th inning to post a comeback victory in the sixth and final game of the World Series for the franchise's first World Championship. Babe Ruth hits a 1st-inning home run in the Yankees' 6-4 win victory over the crosstown Giants.

1978: In Game 5 of the World Series, the Yankees pound the Dodgers with a barrage of 18 hits, 16 of them singles, on the way to a 12-2 win. Rookie starter Jim Beattie goes the distance for the win, as New York now take a 3-2 lead in games.

2001: The Yankees beat the Oakland A's 5-3 to win the ALDS. New York become the first team ever to win a best-of-five series after losing the first two games at home.
