On this day in Yankee history... 


1926: Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth demonstrate that power hitting is not the only thing they can do when Lou scores on a double steal with the Babe in a victory over the White Sox. They had pulled the same double steal against the Red Sox on April 13th.

1934: Earle Combs crashes into the outfield wall at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis and suffers a fractured skull. The Yankees call up George Selkirk but learns he broke his arm the same day playing for Newark. 

1966: The Yankees beat the Angels 9-1, as Mickey Mantle  hits his second homer in two days. The round-tripper, his 493rd, ties him with Lou Gehrig for 6th place on the all-time list.

1991: In a 10-2 romp over the Mariners, the Yankees score three runs on a ground ball hit back to the pitcher. With runners on second and third base and one out in the 4th, Pat Kelly hits a comebacker to Erik Hanson. The Seattle hurler traps Kevin Maas in a rundown between third and home, but Maas scores when third baseman Edgar Martinez's throw hits him in the back. The ball rolls up the first base line in foul territory, where it is recovered by catcher Dave Cochrane. The backstop throws home to head off Alvaro Espinoza who is also attempting to score. The throw goes into the Mariners' dugout, allowing Espinoza and Kelly to cross the plate with the second and third runs.

1999: The Yankees hammer the Indians 21-1. The Bronx Bombers are led by DH Chili Davis, who bangs out five hits, including a double and homer, while driving in six runs.

2004: Another saga is added to the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry as a bench-clearing brawl breaks out after Sox starter Bronson Arroyo hits Alex Rodriguez, who hit the game-winning home run the previous night, with a pitch.

2009: The Yankees extend their winning streak to 8 games with an 8-3 defeat of the A's. Joba Chamberlain is the winner.

2012: Seattle's Felix Hernandez breaks Alex Rodriguez's hand with a pitch in the 8th inning of a 4-2 win over the Yankees.  The Yanks make history, however, by becoming the first team since the 1927 Philadelphia A's to have three players with 2,500+ career hits in the starting lineup. New York uses Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and newly-acquired Ichiro Suzuki to pull it off.

July 23rd

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1922: The Yankees start planning for the World Series when they pick up third baseman Joe Dugan and one-time Cleveland World Series hero Elmer Smith from Boston, giving up outfielder Elmer Miller, shortstop Chick Fewster, shortstop Johnny Mitchell, and, later, pitcher Lefty O'Doul.  The contending Browns and other clubs howl in protest and this deal will lead to a rule barring non-waiver trades after June 15th. 

1925: Lou Gehrig hits the first of his 23 career grand slams in an 11-7 win over the Washington Senators.

1957: Mickey Mantle hits for the cycle, and adds a stolen base, against Chicago's Bob Keegan. The Yankees win 10-6.

1978: Reggie Jackson returns to the team and the Yankees win their 5th straight, 3-1 over the White Sox. At the Chicago airport, Billy Martin, reacting to reporters' questions about Jackson and George Steinbrenner, replies: "The two deserve each other. One's a born liar, the other's convicted." The remarks will cost Billy his job. The next day, Martin resigns under pressure, giving way to Bob Lemon after a one-game interim by Dick Howser. 

2012: The Yankees acquire Ichiro Suzuki frlom the Mariners in exchange for minor league pitchers D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. Hours after the trade, Ichiro singles off Kevin Millwood in his first at-bat as a Yankee in a 4-1 win against his former team. Hiroki Kuroda is the winner while Alex Rodriguez hits his 15th homer of the season.

1925: The Yankees buy shortstop Leo Durocher from  Hartford of the Eastern League.

1948: The Yankees take the rubber match of a 3-game series with the Indians as Vic Raschi earns the 6-5 decision over Bob Feller. Joe DiMaggio's grand slam is the big blow for the Bombers: he has hit four homers and a triple in Feller's four starts against New York. His eight RBI in the three games with Cleveland give him a league-leading 82.

1954: Casey Stengel switches players in an effort to get more power in the Yankee lineup. Phil Rizzuto plays second base and Mickey Mantle plays shortstop, the position he manned four years ago in the minor leagues. Mantle wins the game against the White Sox with a 10th-inning home run that produces a 3-2 result.

1960: The Yankees purchase 33-year-old pitcher Luis Arroyo from Jersey City of the International League. He will be a key to New York's pennant drive this year and a star in 1961. 

  





1961: Johnny Blanchard does it again, with a solo pinch-hit home run to start a three-run 9th-inning Yankee rally to upend the Red Sox 11-9.

1998: The Yankees romp over the Tigers 13-2 to run their record to 71-25, a major-league record winning percentage after 96 games.

2011: The Yankees score 9 runs in the 3rd inning, on their way to an emphatic 17 -7 win over the A's. Nick Swisher hits a three-run homer and Mark Teixeira a grand slam during the big inning.

2014: The Yankees acquire Chase Headley from the Padres in return for Yangervis Solarte and Rafael De Paula. The erstwhile Padres third baseman joins his new team in time to enter today's game in the 9th inning, and to be the hero when he drives in Brian Roberts with the winning run in the 14th inning as New York beat Texas 2-1.  

July 21st

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1961: At Fenway Park, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris slam back-to-back home runs in the 1st inning for the Yankees, but it takes a two-out, 9th-inning pinch-hit grand slam by Johnny Banchard to finally subdue the Red Sox 11-8. The pinch slam is the AL's 6th of the season, a new record.

1977: Catfish Hunter tosses a 7-0 shutout against the Brewers to snap a 3-game Yankee losing streak.

1980: C.C. Sabathia is born. 

2009: Sergio Mitre earns his first win since 2007 as the Yankees beat the Orioles 6-4. Mitre underwent Tommy John surgery in 2008, then was suspended for 50 games after testing positive for a banned substance; he allows 4 runs in 5 2/3 innings in his first start after being called up from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace the injured Chien-Ming Wang. A two-run homer by Robinson Cano off Rich Hill and a two-run single by Alex Rodriguez are the big blows for the Bronx Bombers. Combined with Boston's 4-2 loss to Texas,  the win gives the Yankees sole possession of first place in the AL East for the first time this season.

On this day in Yankee history... 


1904: The Highlanders trade pitchers Long Tom Hughes (7-11) and Barney Wolfe (0-3) to the Senators for Al Orth (3-4). Orth will regain his form in New York, going 11-6 this year and will win 27 games in 1906.  

1912: Highlanders pitcher Ray Caldwell, inserted as a pinch runner, steals home for the tying run in an eventual 4-3 win in the opening game of a doubleheader with the Indians. He then pitches a 4-0 shutout in the nitecap.

1965: Mel Stottlemyre becomes the first pitcher to hit an inside-the-park grand slam since Deacon Phillippe did it for the Pirates in 1910. The Yankee starter's bases-loaded drive in the 5th off Bill Monboquette assures him a 6-3 victory over the Red Sox.

1985: Scattering seven hits, Ron Guidry wins his 12th straight, beating the Twins 8-3. Don Mattingly has a two-run homer and a two-run double for the Yankees.

1987: Don Mattingly ties a major league mark as he is credited with 22 putouts in one game. The feat was last accomplished in the AL by Hal Chase in 1906.

1998: The Tigers take the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees by a 4-3 score in 17 innings. The Bombers bounce back to take the nightcap by the identical score. The 26 innings take just over eight and a half hours to play.

1950: The Yankees obtain their first black players, outfielder Elston Howard and pitcher Frank Barnes. They purchase them from the Kansas City Monarchs and assign them to the Muskegon Clippers of the Central League.  

1959: Before 57,000 at the Stadium, the Yankees sweep a pair from the visiting White Sox, winning the nitecap 6-4 on Mickey Mantle's homer off Turk Lown. In game 1, Yankee veteran Enos Slaughter belts a pair of homers; at age 43, he is the oldest player this century to accomplish the feat. Carlton Fisk, a few months older, will top Slaughter in 1991.

1960: The Yankees outslug the Indians 13-11 behind the power of Bill Skowron. The Moose follows a Yogi Berra blast with his second homer in the 8th, but Cleveland answers with two in the bottom of the 8th to take an 11-8 lead. Skowron then hits a bases-loaded double in the 9th to win it. Roger Maris hits his 30th home run, and Jimmy Piersall homers for the Tribe.

1961: ML Commissioner Ford Frick, an old friend of Babe Ruth's, announces that should Ruth's single-season home run record be beaten after 154 games are played, the record will carry a 'distinctive mark'. When asked about the ruling, Roger Maris replies, "A season is a season." Sportswriter Dick Young suggests an asterisk, which is later claimed to be Frick's idea. No such designation is ever used in the record books, though, but the incident leads to a legend that an 'official record book' lists Maris's record with an asterisk. The myth is still popularly believed over 50 years later. 

1962: John W. Cox, owner of Yankee Stadium, donates the facility to his alma mater Rice University. 

1975: Thurman Munson's 1st-inning single and RBI against the Twins are nullified because the tar on his bat handle exceeds the 18-inch limit. Catcher Glenn Borgmann gets the putout. The Yankees lose 2-1.

2002: Frank 'Spec' Shea, Yankee starting pitcher in the first ever televised World Series game, dies at the age of 81.

2007: Shelley Duncan hits his 25th homer for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees to break Wendell Magee's franchise record for home runs. Duncan will be called up to the  majors and hit three homers in his first three days in big leagues.

On this day in Yankee history... 


1933:  The Yankees win their ninth straight and take the lead from the Senators, beating the White Sox 5-4.  Johnny Allen gets the win, with help from Wilcy Moore (below) for the final out.

1940: Joe Torre is born. 

1960: The Yankees score five runs in the 4th off Dick Stigman, and Whitey Ford coasts to a complete game 9-2 victory over the Indians.

1961: Mickey Mantle connects for two homers off rookie Joe McClain to pace the Yankees to a 5-3 win over the Senators. In pre-game ceremonies, Mantle teamed with New York Congressman Eddie Dooley to win the homer-hitting contest against other Congressional-player duos.

1995: The White Sox shell Yankee starter Jack McDowell for 13 hits and nine runs in 4 2/3 innings in their 11-4 win in the second game of a doubleheader. McDowell makes an obscene gesture to the fans as he is booed walking off the field.

1999: On Yogi Berra Day at the Stadium, David Cone becomes the 16th pitcher in major league history and the third Yankee to toss a perfect game, beating the Expos 6-0. In pre-game ceremonies, Don Larsen throws out the ceremonial first pitch to Yogi, commemorating his perfecto in the 1956 World Series. Coincidentally, these are the only two perfect games ever pitched in interleague games.

2017: The trading deadline frenzy heats up two weeks early this year as the Yankees pull off a big trade, acquiring third baseman Todd Frazier and pitcher David Robertson, two former All-Stars, as well as pitcher Tommy Kahnle from the White Sox for pitcher Tyler Clippard and prospects Blake Rutherford, Ian Clarkin and Tito Polo.
