back in the lineup, golfs his 25th in the 4th, also off Slim. Gehrig

straight while Boston lose their 12th straight.
1954: Tom Morgan hits three Red Sox batters in the third inning of a 6-1 loss. Mickey Mantle's homer off Willard Nixon is the only Yankee tally.

1961: Whitey Ford (14-2) tops the Senators 5-1 to give the second place Yankees their 22nd win of the month. Roger Maris drives in three runs and Mickey Mantle lines a shot over the head of CF Willie Tasby that rebounds for an inside-the-park home run. Ford becomes the first pitcher in AL history to win eight games in one month.
1977: Cliff Johnson becomes the second player in three days to hit a pair of homers in an
inning. He hits three consecutive home runs, including two in the 8th
inning, as the Yankees rout the Blue Jays 11-5. New York (42-33) are a half-game behind Boston.
1934: Lou Gehrig is beaned in an exhibition game in Norfolk, VA.
1941: In a doubleheader with the Senators, Joe DiMaggio ties and then breaks the AL consecutive game hitting streak of 41 established by George Sisler. In the opener, he knots the record with a double off Dutch Leonard, and in the nightcap the 'Yankee Clipper' tops the record with a 7th-inning single against Walt Masterson.
1950: The Yankees call up Whitey Ford from their minor league affiliate at Kansas City.
1966: At Fenway Park, Mantle opens the scoring in the 1st inning with a 3-run shot, then sandwiches a homer between round trippers by Bobby Richardson and Joe Pepitone in the 3rd inning in the Yankees' 6-5 win. The consecutive trifecta was last done by the Yankees in 1947, when Charlie Keller, Joe DiMaggio and Johnny Lindel connected. Richardson is 5 for 5 in the game. Mantle's two homers
today, his 37th and 38th at Fenway, will be his last in Boston, and tie
him with Babe Ruth for most homers by a Sox opponent.
1972: Jim Palmer's 8-game win streak ends as the Yankees chase the ace in the 2nd inning of a 4-3 win. Mel Stottlemyre, with relief help from Sparky Lyle, gains his 7th win.
1997: At the Stadium, the Indians score seven runs off the usually stingy David Cone, but the Yankees outlast the Indians, 11-10. With his 9th-inning single, Sandy Alomar Jr. extends his hitting streak to 26 games, 6th longest in Tribe history.

The record was set by the White Sox on July 1, 1962 in the second game of a doubleheader against the Indians.
2017: In an episode bringing back memories of Moonlight Graham, whose abbreviated major league career took place on this day 112 years ago, theYankees' Dustin Fowler makes his big league debut as the starting right fielder in a game against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. The end of the top of the 1st inning finds him in the on-deck circle, and in the bottom of the frame, he vainly tries to track down a foul ball hit by Jose Abreu down the right field foul line and crashes into a wall, badly injuring hs knee. He has to be carted off the field, his season over.
1907: The last-place Washington Senators steal a record 13 bases off catcher Branch Rickey in a 16-5 win over the New York Highlanders. Rickey, acquired last February from the St. Louis Browns, is pressed into service despite a bad shoulder because of an injury to starter Red Kleinow. Rickey's first throw to second base ends up in right field and the subsequent pegs are not much better. He almost nips Jim Delahanty on a steal of third base. In his eight innings, relief pitcher Lew Brockett helps Washington with a deliberate windup. Only pitcher Tom Hughes and second baseman Nig Perrine are steal-less, while Hal Chase swipes one for New York.
1927: The Yankees build a 9-0 lead against the A's, and withstand an 8-run rally by Connie Mack's club in the 9th to win 9-8. New York now lead the AL by 10 games. Lou Gehrig collects his 100th hit of the year, belting his 23rd homer with one on. Babe Ruth, nursing a sore right knee, sits out his third straight game.
1939: The Yankees hit eight home runs in the first game of a doubleheader with the A's, and five more in the nightcap. Both are major league records, as are the 53 total bases in a doubleheader. Joe DiMaggio, Babe Dahlgren and Joe Gordon each hit three homers. The Yankees win the opener 23-2 and take the nightcap 10-0.

1997: David Wells starts the game against Cleveland wearing Babe Ruth's autographed cap from the 1934 season. Joe Torre makes him take it off after the 1st inning since it doesn't conform to the team's current uniform. Without the cap, Wells blows a 3-0 lead as the Indians go on to a 12-8 victory.

1978: Graig Nettles belts a two-run homer in the 14th to give the Yankees a 6-4 win over the Red Sox. Dick Drago serves up Nettles' 13th homer of the year. Sparky Lyle (6-1) gets the win in relief of starter Ron Guidry (13-0), who gave up 8 hits in 6 innings.
2012: The Yankees lose two starting pitchers on the same day. First, they place CC Sabathia on the disabled list with a groin strain, then in their game against the Indians, Andy Pettitte is hit by a line drive off the bat of Casey Kotchman in the 5th inning, breaking an ankle. Small consolation, the Yanks win the game, 5 - 4.
1920: Lou Gehrig receives his first national mention when, as a high school junior for NYC's School of Commerce, he steals the show in a high school championship game against Lane Tech at Wrigley Field in Chicago. His grand slam in the 8th gives the New York team a 12-8 victory. Scouts watch open-mouthed as the ball sails out of the park and onto Waveland Avenue.
1961: In Los Angeles, Angel reliever Art Fowler, who has allowed just one hit in his last 12 innings, serves up a 9th-inning home run to Moose Skowron, as the Yankees win 8-6. Mickey Mantle adds an earlier homer, off Ken Mcbride, and Whitey Ford wins his 13th of the year. Yogi Berra collects his 2,000th career hit; to celebrate the achievement, a huge cake is rolled out.
1977: In front of 55,039 fans, the Yankees complete a 3-game sweep of the Red Sox, avenging the three losses last week to the Sox at Fenway Park. New York takes a 4-1 lead into the 9th, but the Sox tie the game. In the bottom of the 9th, Paul Blair bounces a bases-loaded ball over the head of Butch Hobson at third base to pin the loss on reliever Bill Campbell.
1979: The Yankees reacquire Bobby Murcer from the Cubs in exchange for pitcher Paul Semall and cash. Murcer will once again thrive in Yankee Stadium, hitting .273 with eight home runs.
2009: Brett Gardner collects five hits, including a triple and a homer, as the Yankees beat the Mets 9-1 before a record-breaking crowd at Citi Field. Alex Rodriguez hits home run number 564 of his career, passing Reggie Jackson on the all-time list; Jackson was 6th at the time of his retirement in 1987, but falls to 12th now. Three errors by the Mets' infield in the 2nd lead to four runs.
1903: In Chicago the White Sox opt to bat first against the visiting Highlanders, but the head start proves to be not much of an advantage as the two teams battle to an 18-inning 6-6 tie, with a cumulative 30 hits between them.
1934: In beating the White Sox 13-2, pitcher Johnny Broaca strikes out 5 times, a dubious achievement that will not repeated by a Yankee until Bernie Williams in 1991. Lou Gehrig contributes to the rout by hitting for the cycle for the first time in his career.
1977: Mike Torrez outduels Luis Tiant to give the Yankees 1 5-1 win over the Red Sox. Graig Nettles' 3-run homer is the big blow. New York now trail the Sox by three games.

Tino Martinez also contributes 4 hits for Nw York. In the 8th, the O's Jesse Orosco makes his 1,051th relief appearance, breaking Kent Tekulve's major league record.
1908: Charging the Highlander ownership with refusing to spend money to build the team, manager Clark Griffith resigns; shortstop Kid Elberfeld replaces him as player-manager following today's 6-6 tie with the A's. New York continue to fade, and will finish last with 103 losses.
1934: After going hitless in his last 21 at bats, Babe Ruth hits a grand slam in a 5-0 Yankee win over the White Sox.
1936: Rookie phenom Joe DiMaggio ties three major-league records in New York's 10-run 5th inning against the Chicago, hitting 2 home runs for 8 total bases. With 2 doubles, he equals the modern record of four long hits in a game. The Yankees the White Sox 18-4.
1958:The Yankees erupt for five runs in the 4th inning off Early Wynn to beat the White Sox 6-2 at Comiskey Park. Mickey Mantle's drive into the CF bleachers leads off the inning, followed by a single, a walk, Jerry Lumpe's first major league home run, and a home run by Norm Siebern. Ryne Duren strikes out six of the last nine batters to preserve Bob Turley's win.
1962: A marathon between the Yankees and the Tigers concludes in the 22nd inning when Jack Reed's home run ~ the only one of his major league career ~ gives New York and Jim Bouton a 9-7 victory.
