On this day in Yankee history... 

1932: Lou Gehrig  hits four consecutive home runs and narrowly misses a fifth, and Tony Lazzeri hits for the cycle as the Yankees beat the Philadelphia A's 20-13. The Yanks set a major league record for total bases with 50 and both teams set a still-standing record for extra bases with 41.

1972: Tied 10-10 with the White Sox after 12 innings, both Bobby Murcer and Thurman Munson will deliver 3-run homers in an 8-run 13th for the Yankees. Murcer has 4-hits and scores 5 times in the 18-10 final.

1998: Orlando 'El Duque' Hernandez makes his major league debut at the Stadium, and gets the win as the Yankees beat the Devil Rays 7-1. The Cuban defector, who escaped from his homeland by boat 6 months ago, allows a run on 5 hits in 7 innings.

2003: Derek Jeter is named the 11th team captain in Yankee history. 

2004: At the Stadium, the Yankees score 3 run in the 7th-inning runs on a Gary Sheffield double and a Hideki Matsui single on the way to a 5-2 win over the Orioles. Before the game, Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada are presented with 2003 Silver Slugger Awards before the game.
