September 5th

On this day in Yankee history...

1950: The Yankees acquire first baseman Johnny Hopp, currently second in the NL in hitting with a .340 average, for an undisclosed amount of cash. The Yanks believe that Hopp will provide late-season pennant insurance.

1961: The Yankees beat the Senators 6-1, sending Washington to their 20th defeat in their last 21 games. Mickey Mantle homers for his 51st. The Yanks' win, coupled with the Tigers dropping both games of a doubleheader, puts New York ahead by 7 1/2 games.

1964: The Yankees acquire veteran pitcher Pedro Ramos from the Indians as pennant insurance. The Indians get two players to be named later: Ralph Terry on October 12th, and Bud Daley on November 27th.

On the field, Blue Moon Odom makes his major league debut, and Mickey Mantle greets him with a 3-run opposite-field homer in the 1st inning. New York hang to win 9-7.

2017: The New York Times reports that the Red Sox are being investigated for possible sign-stealing during a series against their eternal rivals the Yankees last month. The team's assistant athletic trainer is suspected of having used a smart watch to capture signs and relay them to players on the field. While trying to decode the other team's signs is a long-standing tradition in baseball, using any type of electronic equipment to do so is strictly prohibited.
