1907: Highlander pitcher John 'Tacks' Neuer begins baseball's most successful short career by besting the Red Sox 1-0 in his first start. In one month he will pitch six complete games and win four of them, including three shutouts, and then disappear from the ML scene.

1921: Despite three doubles by Babe Ruth, which also starts a record streak in which the Bambino gets a least one extra-base hit in 9 straight games, the Yankees fall to the Tigers 7-3. At season's end, Ruth's 119 extra-base hits, 177 runs, and 457 total bases will go into the record books. His .846 slugging average is one point behind that of a year ago.
