On this day in Yankee history... 


1920: Bob Lemon is born. 










2003: Alfonso Soriano breaks a major league season record by hitting his 13th leadoff homer of the year, in a 10-inning loss to the White Sox. 









2009: The Yankees are the first team to clinch a playoff spot this year after a 6-5 win over the Angels. Alex Rodriguez drives in Brett Gardner on a sacrifice fly in the 9th; he has a homer and 3 RBI in the game. Mariano Rivera pitches a scoreless 9th inning for the save.

2012:The Yankees win a wild extra-innings game against the A's at the Stadium to stay one game ahead of the Orioles in the AL East race. Oakland go ahead 9-5 in the 13th on three home runs, but the Yankees come back to tie and then win it in the bottom of the 14th when Ichiro Suzuki scores on a misplayed ground ball off the bat of Eduardo Núñez.
