1896: Pat Collins is born.

1920: Carl Mays, who started yesterday, opens today for the Yankees in Detroit. This time he is more effective, stopping the Tigers on two runs. Babe Ruth hits his 49th home run and Mays drives in the final run of a 4-2 win.

1927: Babe Ruth hits two home runs to bring his season's total to 52, and the Yankees sweep a doubleheader in Cleveland to clinch the AL pennant. They currently have a 98-41 record and lead the second place Philadelphia A's by 17 games. It is Miller Huggins' fifth flag, tying him with Connie Mack.

1931: Tony Lazzeri steals second base, reaches third, then steals home in the 12th to give Lefty Gomez a 2-1 win over the Tigers in the opening game of a doubleheader. In the second game, Lou Gehrig's 2-run homer is the difference in the 4-3 win.

1963: At Minnesota, Jim Bouton wins his 20th game in blanking the Twins 2-0, and the Yankees clinch their 28th pennant.

 1968: Bernie Williams is born. 










2011: Mariano Rivera becomes the second pitcher to record 600 saves, one year after Trevor Hoffman, in preserving a 3-2 Yankee win over the Mariners. 'Mo' is only one save behind Hoffman's all-time record, as the San Diego closer retired after last season.
