 On this day in Yankee history... 


1912: Hal Chase hits a 3-run home run to lead the Highlanders to an 8-6 victory over the Washington Senators at Hilltop Park, in the last game that the New Yorkers will play at the venue. It is also the last time they will play under their present name ~ in 1913, they will move to the Polo Grounds and change their name to the Yankees.

1921: NYC is host to the first one-city World Series since 1906, as the Yankees, playing the first postseason game in franchise history, take on the Giants. Carl Mays needs only 86 pitches to set the Giants down on five hits, four of them by Frankie Frisch, as Babe Ruth drives in the first run of the Series in the opening inning of the 3-0 Yankee win.

1928: Lou Gehrig unloads a three-run homer in the 1st inning of Game 2 of the World Series. Grover Cleveland Alexander, the hero of the 1926 Series between the Yankees and the Cardinals, is driven from the game in the 3rd inning as New York cruise 9-3, taking a 2-0 lead in games.

1939:  In Game 2 of the World Series, Yankee starter Monte Pearson takes a no-hitter into the 8th inning as he shuts out the Reds 4-0. Babe Dahlgren hits a home run and a double as the Yankees take a 2-0 Series lead.

1941:  In the World Series, Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Mickey Owen drops a third strike on Tommy Henrich in what would have been the final out of a Dodgers victory against the Yankees. Given a second chance, the Bombers then rally for a 7-4 win to take a 3-1 Series lead.

1953: The Yankees edge the Dodger 4-3  in Game 6 of the World Series. Billy Martin collects his 12th Series hit, a single to center in the bottom of the 9th inning, to give the Yankees their fifth World Championship in a row. Carl Furillo had tied it up in the top of the 9th with a two-run home run.

1996: Bernie Williams homers from each side of the plate and Cecil Fielder breaks a tie with a 7th-inning single as the Yankees beat the Rangers 6-4 to win the ALDS 3-1 and advance to the LCS.
