1936: Led by Lou Gehrig, who clouts his 33rd homer, the Yankees down the Indians 11-7 at League Park. The loss snaps the Tribe's five-game win streak, and leaves the Yankees 8 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland. Gehrig and Red Rolfe clout homers in the 5th to chase Mel Harder, but the Indians answer with three doubles by Earl Averill and a homer by Hal Trosky. Bump Hadley, with relief from Johnny Murphy, hangs on for his 9th win.

1955: Don Larsen wins 5-2 as the Yankees and Kansas City A's combine for 9 double plays, with the New Yorkers turning 6. Cloyd Boyer, who has 3 of his first 8 pitches hit for home runs ~ by Hank Bauer, Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra ~ takes the loss.

1962: At D.C. Stadium, Mickey Mantle is on the bench with a wrenched knee, but Bill Skowron supplies the power with a grand slam. The Yankees win 9-5.

1978: Ed Figueroa notches a complete game 6-1 victory over the Rangers as the Yankees close to within 7 1/2 games of the AL East-leading Red Sox.

2007: The Yankees tie a franchise record with 8 home runs in a game ~ not one of them from Alex Rodriguez, who is still one shy of 500. Hideki Matsui homers twice and adding blows are Melky Cabrera, Bobby Abreu, Johnny Damon, Robinson Cano, Shelley Duncan and Jorge Posada in a 16-3 rout of the White Sox.

2016: For the second time in a week, the Yankees trade a top-rank relief pitcher in return for four players. After swapping Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs on July 25th, today they ship Andrew Miller to the Indians for Clint Frazier and pitchers J.P. Feyereisen, Ben Heller and Justus Sheffield.

1890: Casey Stengel is born. 

1951: Joe DiMaggio makes a rare mental error against Detroit, catching a Steve Souchock fly ball in deep center and, thinking it's the third out, begins trotting in. It's only the second out, and George Kell scores from second base to make the score 4-2 in the 8th. Despite the lapse, the Yanks win, 5-4, with DiMag redeeming himself by knocking in the winning run in the 9th.

1977: Don Gullett picks up his 10th win of the year, a 9-3 victory over the A's. But it will prove to be his final win of the year when he injures his shoulder in the 7th inning and leaves the game.

1990: In a surprisingly harsh ruling, Commissioner Fay Vincent orders George Steinbrenner to resign as the Yankees  general partner by August 20th, and bans him from day-to-day operation of the team for life. The ruling is a result of Steinbrenner's $40,000 payment to confessed gambler Howie Spira for damaging information about since-traded Yankee star Dave Winfield. When the news is posted on the scoreboard at Yankee Stadium during a game with Detroit, it draws a 2-minute standing ovation from the crowd. 

1997: David Wells fires a three-hitter as the Yankees beat the A's 7-0. Tino Martinez hits his 36th homer and Luis Sojo has four hits.

2008: The Yankees, in need of catching help after losing Jorge Posada for the remainder of the season, acquire Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers for Kyle Farnsworth. 

2011: The Yankees complete a doubleheader sweep of the Orioles with a huge 1st inning in the nitecap, after winning the opener 8-3. The Bronx Bombers score 12 runs as they chase Zach Britton, just back from the minors, after only one out, but not before he gives up 9 runs. They roll to a 17-3 win, accumulating 24 hits, as Ivan Nova benefits from the outburst; Robinson Cano goes 5 for 5 with 5 RBI, while Nick Swisher hits a two-run homer in each game.

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1903: Cy Young goes all the way as Boston lose to the Highlanders 15-14. The New Yorkers had been shut out in their two previous matches in the series. Patsy Dougherty leads the Boston offense by hitting for the cycle, but Cy gets little defense as Boston make eight errors behind him. New York starter Jack Chesbro is lifted in the 6th for Harry Howell, while Willie Keeler has four hits to lead the Highlander offense. The game lasts 2 hours, 10 minutes.

1938: Lefty Gomez pitches a complete game 4-3 win against the White Sox at Comiskey Park. In a postgame radio interview with Bob Elson of NBC, Yankee outfielder Jake Powell (below) makes headlines with remarks about "knocking niggers on the head and then throwing them in jail" as part of his off-season duties as a policeman. For the statements, Judge Landis suspends Powell for 10 days.

1951: Before a Stadium crowd of 70,972, the Yankees sweep the White Sox 8-3 and 2-0. Joe DiMaggio powers two homers off Lou Kretlow in the opener, and ex-Pale Hoser Bob Kuzava outduels Saul Rogovin to win the nitecap. With yesterday's game rained out, the Sox are now 6 1/2 out of first place.

1966: The Yankees edge the White Sox 2-1 on Mickey Mantle's 14th homer in 24 games. The Mick moves ahead of Lou Gehrig into 6th place on the all-time homer list with the blast.

1978:  The  Yankee Stadium crowd are pleasantly surprised as recently departed manager Billy Martin returns to join in with the Old Timers' Day festivities. Much to their delight, the fans are informed that 'Billy the Kid will return as skipper in 1980. 

  





1991: During a game at the Stadium, Oakland outfielder Jose Canseco is bombarded with assorted objects by unruly Yankee fans. Included among the objects are an inflatable doll, a transistor radio, and a head of cabbage. Oakland escape with a 10-8 victory, Canseco stroking a double in four at bats.

1890: Elmer Miller is born. In 1921, he will become the first Yankee ever to bat in a World Series game.

1922: The Yankees move back into first place when Sad Sam Jones beats the St. Louis Browns' Ray Kolp 7-3. Kolp lasts just two innings before Bill Bayne takes over for the final seven and allows two runs. Ken Williams hits his 23rd homer but Whitey Witt counters with a three-run blast.

1936:  In the 6th inning of a 16-6 Yankee blowout in Detroit, the Tigers' Goose Goslin drives a ball into the gap in right center. Joe DiMaggio and Myril Hoag, in for a slumping Jake Powell, converge for the catch and collide, the ball bounding by for an inside-the-park home run. Both players are knocked unconscious but appear unhurt: DiMaggio stays in though Hoag is replaced. Hoag will play tomorrow and collect a single, then collapse in his hotel room on the 30th with a brain clot. Hoag will be operated on successfully at Harper Hospital and will be out the rest of the season, but will return to play six more years. New York win the game on 20 hits, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings, and three apiece in the 4th and 5th. Lou Gehrig contributes two doubles, a single and his 31st home run of the year.

1958: The Yankees double up the Kansas City A's 14-7. Leading the Bomber attack is Mickey Mantle, who homers from both sides of the plate for the sixth time in his career.

1960: With relief help from Bobby Shantz, Whitey Ford, who leaves with an upset stomach, picks up a 4-0 win over the Indians in the opener of a doubleheader. Tony Kubek, Mickey Mantle and Clete Boyer homer for the Yankees. The pinstripers go on to sweep, winning the nitecap 9-2 and taking over first place by three percentage points.

1977: At the Stadium, a Thursday crowd of 40,918 cheer as the Yankees unleashe a 15-hit attack to down the Orioles 14-2. The Bomber barrage includes homers by Graig Nettles, Thurman Munson and Roy White.

1983: American League president Lee MacPhail decides that George Brett's 'Pine Tar' home run should count. The remainder of the game will be played at Yankee Stadium on August 18th. 

1995: The Yankees obtain David Cone from the Blue Jays in a trade for minor league pitchers Marty Janzen, Jason Jarvis and Mike Gordon.  

1996: Darryl Strawberry's 300th career home run, a two-run shot in the 9th, lifts the Yankees to a 3-2 win over the visiting Royals. The Yankees now lead the AL East by 12 games.

2006: Chien-Ming Wang retires the Devil Rays on just 103 pitches in a complete game 6-0 win at the Stadium. The Yankee ace induces 18 ground ball outs and allows just two singles and two walks. Derek Jeter collects two hits and two RBI, while Bernie Williams caps the scoring with a sixth-inning home run to dead center.‬ ‪

On this day in Yankee history... 


1922: Elam Vangilder gives up a home run to Wally Pipp in the 4th but leads 2-1 going in to the 8th inning. The Yankees jump on the Browns starter and on reliever Ray Kolp for four runs before the Browns tie the game with three in the 9th. St. Louis reliever Dave Danforth, facing pinch hitter, comes in with a pitch "that sailed a foot" according to umpire Brick Owens. When the arbiter examines the ball, he rules it was doctored, earning Danforth an automatic ten-day suspension. Rasty Wright then comes out of the bullpen and serves up a game-winning home run to Wally Schang for a 6-5 Yankee win.

1951: The White Sox, just 3 1/2 games behind the Yankees and Red Sox, open a four-game series at the Stadium. Trailing 3-1 in the 9th, the Sox make it 3-2 before rain and the Yankees delay the game. Gil McDougald is ejected for stalling, and Casey Stengel makes five pitching changes. The Yanks finally win when the game is called after 30 minutes.

1970: The Yankees beat the Angels 5-2 behind Mel Stottlemyre, who is helped by Gene Michael in the 9th. With the core tied, the Yankee shortstop pulls the hidden ball trick on California pinch runner Jarvis Tatum. The Yanks score three in the 10th to win.

1975: Alex Rodriguez is born. 

   




1988: Tommy John achieves a major league first by committing three errors on one play in the 4th inning of a game against the Brewers. All is forgiven, though, as the Yankees coast to a 16-3 win. The 'feat' ties the major-league record for errors in one inning by a pitcher.

2015: Alex Rodriguez joins the small club of players who have homered on their 40th birthday when he goes deep off Matt Harrison in the Yankees' 6-2 win over the Rangers. Didi Gregorius contributes three hits, including a homer, and 4 RBIs.

 1922: On a hot day at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, tempers flare in the Yankee dugout, as a fight breaks out between teammates Bob Meusel and Wally Schang before the game. No sooner are they separated than fisticuffs erupt between Babe Ruth and Wally Pipp. The players then turn on the Browns, beating them, 11-6. Ruth bangs two homers, Pipp adds another, and Schang chips in with a two-run triple.

1928: Detroit rookie righthander Vic Sorrell and the Yankees' Waite Hoyt are locked in a 1-1 tie after 11. 12 hits and 2 walks in the 12th plate 11 New York runs in the biggest extra-inning avalanche in ML history.

1933: Lou Gehrig is thrown out of the second game in a doubleheader against the Red Sox. Had it been in the first game, his consecutive games streak would have ended. 

1935: An unusual double play occurs when a line drive hit by Yankee left fielder Jesse Hill strikes Senators pitcher Ed Linke in the head and rebounds to catcher Jack Redmond, who catches the ball and fires it to second to double off Ben Chapman. Linke will be hospitalized for two days, though his team go on to win 9-3.

1936: Umpire Bill Summers is forced off the field after he is hit in the groin by a pop bottle thrown from an unruly crowd of 50,000 at Comiskey Park on hand for a doubleheader with the Yankees. The crowd are upset with an out call at first base on Rip Radcliff in the 8th inning of the nitecap. Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, on hand to watch the game, offers a $5,000 reward over the public address system for the culprit, but only draws more boos. The deluge of pop bottles finally abates when Jimmy Dykes pleads through the field amplifier. The Yanks sweep the pair 12-3 and 11-8, the nitecap in 11 innings.  Lou Gehrig hits his 29th homer with two aboard to start New York's scoring in the opener. Joe DiMaggio and Tony Lazzeri add round trippers to make it easy for Johnny Broaca.

1940: Spud Chandler beats the White Sox with his bat as well as with his pitching arm, knocking in six runs with a single and two home runs, one a grand slam off Pete Appleton. The six RBI performance ties the AL record for pitchers held by Appleton and two others.

1948: Babe Ruth makes his final public appearance at the NYC premiere of The Babe Ruth Story. The Sultan of Swat will die three weeks later. 

1977: The Yankees open their final series with Baltimore by tying the Orioles at 4 on a Cliff Johnson two-run pinch homer in the 9th. Reggie Jackson then leads off the 10th with a solo shot to win.

1996: The Yankees unleash a 21-hit barrage and bat around twice to whip the Royals 15-1. This is the most hits New York have collected in nine innings since August 25, 1984 when they had 23 against the Mariners. Jimmy Key is the easy winner, giving up three hits in seven innings. Pat Kelly, who had been out the whole season after undergoing surgery, makes his debut and promptly pulls a hamstring.

 On this day in Yankee history... 

1904:  Before 1,522 at Hilltop Park,  in New York, veteran Al Orth makes his first start for the Highlanders and matches zeroes with Chicago's Yip Owen. In the bottom of the 9th, Patsy Dougherty leads off with a triple and scores on Willie Keeler's bouncer through the infield. 

1908: With the Highlanders leading the Tigers 3-2 in the 8th, Detroit score two runs on a Ty Cobb triple. With lefty Claude Rossman, newly appointed New York manager Kid Elberfeld has righty pitcher Jack Chesbro and first baseman Hal Chase swap places. Chase allows a fly ball that scores Cobb, then goes back to 1B and Chesbro resumes his spot on the mound. It is Chase's only pitching career appearance. The juggling act will be for naught, though, as the Tigers win, 5-3.

1939: Yankee freshman Atley Donald sets the AL rookie record for consecutive wins. 'Swampy', as he is known in the clubhouse, beats the Browns 5-1 for his 12th straight victory.

1948: In the tight four-team AL race, Joe DiMaggio leads the Yankees to a sweep over the White Sox, 5-3 and 7-3. Joe D goes 3 for 3 in the first game to back Ed Lopat, then adds a triple and two doubles in the nitecap. His three RBI in game two gives him an AL-high 86.

1955: Joe DiMaggio is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. 

  



  

1959: In action against Detroit, Yankee first baseman Moose Skowron, reaching for a wide throw, collides with Tiger runner Coot Veal. Skowron's arm is broken in two places and he is out for the rest of the season. Marv Throneberry will fill in at 1B. The Yanks win 9-8 when Yogi Berra hits a home run in the 9th with Mickey Mantle aboard. Prior to the Yogi homer, Bobby Richardson and Fritz Brickell hit their first major round trippers for New York. Berra's blast erases five Yankee errors, three by third baseman Hector Lopez.

1961: With his four-home run performance in a doubleheader sweep of the White Sox, Roger Maris moves 25 games ahead of Babe Ruth's 1927 pace. The Yankee slugger now has 40 for the year. Mickey Mantle also homers off Frank Baumann in the first game. He ends the day with 38 home runs.

1978: Ron Guidry gets new Yankee manager Bob Lemon off to a good start, striking out 8 and scattering 6 hits on his way to a 4-0 complete game shutout of the Royals.

1995: Randy Velarde collects five hits in New York's 8-1 win over the Kansas City. The Yankee second baseman's hits include four singles and a home run.

1998: Former Yankee pitcher Jim Bouton makes his first appearance at the Stadium since 1970 at Oldtimers Day and is greeted with cheers all around. Bouton had been persona non grata in New York since writing Ball Four, which broke a long-standing taboo in sports by taking readers into the locker room and revealing players' extracurricular escapades. The Yanks invited the Bulldog back after his son wrote a Father's Day article in the New York Times suggesting it.  

2011: The Yankees extend the Mariners' franchise-worst losing streak to 16 games with a 10-3 win in New York. Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira homer and have three RBI each.

2015: Alex Rodriguez continues his remarkable comeback season by hitting three homers in an 8-5 Yankee win over Twins. His third long ball ties the score against closer Glen Perkins in the 9th, and John Ryan Murphy follows with a three-run game-winning shot.

2016: In a rare development, the Yankees are sellers at the trading deadline as they send Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs in return for a rich package of prospects that includes outfielders Rashad Crawford and Billy McKinney, infielder Gleyber Torres and pitcher Adam Warren. The Yankees were dealing from a position of strength, with two other top-class relievers on hand in Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances, while Chapman is headed for free agency after the season. 

  


  

2017: In his first plate appearance at home as a member of the Yankees, Todd Frazier hits into one of the rarest plays in baseball: a triple play that scores a run. Batting with the bases loaded and no one out in the 2nd, he hits a hard grounder to shortstop Jose Peraza, who steps on second and throws to first for the first two outs. Meanwhile, Didi Gregorius, who was on second base, freezes up between second and third, thinking Peraza may catch the ball on the fly. First baseman Joey Votto throws to third and catches Gregorius in a rundown. He is called out for leaving the baseline,  but not before Matt Holliday has crossed the plate. Because the final out was not the result of a force out, the run stands. The Yankees go on to beat the Reds 4-2.
