1903: The Boston Americans top the visiting New York Highlanders 12-5, with a little help from umpire Bob Caruthers, who ejects New York pitcher Jesse Tannehill and 2B Jimmy Williams for arguing balls and strikes. 

1930: The Yankee and Tiger outfielders make only two putouts for an AL record which has never been equaled. (The NL record for idleness is one chance ~ Pittsburgh vs. Brooklyn on August 26, 1910). Detroit's George Uhle strikes out 8 in winning 5-4, and dropping the Yanks to 7th place. Hank Johnson (7 innings) and George Pipgras are the New York hurlers.

1953: At Fenway Park, the first-place Yanks beat the Red Sox 6-4. Mickey Mantle hits one homer off Bill Werle, and is robbed of another when Jimmy Piersall makes a sensational catch at the Sox bullpen in right-center field.

1966:  At Minneapolis, the 6-20 Yankees edge the Twins 3-2. Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle both homer, and Joe Pepitone delivers the game-winning roundtripper in the 9th.

1999: The Yankees defeat the Mariners 6-1. Relief pitcher Mike Stanton makes his first major league start for New York, ending his record streak of 552 consecutive relief app

On this day in Yankee history... 


1915: The Yankees pound the Red Sox 10-3, scoring all of their runs in the 4th inning. Sixteen Yanks come to the plate in the frame. The only extra base hit, however, is Wally Pipp's triple.

1927: A record 52,000 fans come out to Comiskey Park, but Waite Hoyt spoils the party for the home team by winning one of his league-leading 22 games 9-0 ~ it is the second straight day that the White Sox have been shut out. Hoyt's batterymate Pat Collins homers in the 7th, while Lou Gehrig adds a pair of triples.

1964:  In Cleveland, there are tornado warnings, but New York supply the damage when Mickey Mantle launches a three-run homer off Tommy John in the 4th inning to lead the Yanks to a 10-3 win.

1991: Gambler Howard Spira is found guilty of trying to extort money from George Steinbrenner. Spira had already received $40,000 from the Yankee owner. 

1994: Danny Tartabull, Mike Stanley and Gerald Williams hit back-to-back-to-back home runs for the Yankees in the 6th inning of New York's 8-4 win over the Red Sox.

2010: Snapping out of what is for him a typical cold start to the season, Mark Teixeira hits three homers and drives in 5 runs to lead New York to a 14-3 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park; he is the second player in Yankee history to hit three long balls in a game against Boston, after Lou Gehrig. Francisco Cervelli, starting because of an injury to Jorge Posada, also drives in 5 runs. Teixeira's last dinger is hit against outfielder Jonathan Van Every, making the second pitching appearance of his career. The game is interrupted for 1:15 by a rain delay in the 5th inning, forcing starter CC Sabathia out early and giving Alfredo Aceves the win.

2013: The injury-riddled Yankees struggle to put together a line-up, today batting pitcher David Phelps 8th and playing outfielder Vernon Wells at third base for an inning in his first career appearance at the position, but they manage to keep on winning. Wells hits a two-run homer in the 1st, then in the 9th Joe Girardi uses a pinch-hitter for 3B Chris Nelson in scoring the deciding run in a 3-2 win over the Rockies. Out of back-up infielders, he puts Wells at the hot corner for the bottom of the 9th. Wells successfully fields a ground ball as Mariano Rivera records his 12th save of the year ~ and the first of his career at Coors Field.

1913: Ray Keating throws a one-hitter at the Tigers, allowing just a second-inning single to Chas Deal in the 6-0 win.

1959: A crowd of 93,103 comes to the Los Angeles Coliseum on Roy Campanella Night to show their affection for the paralyzed former Dodger catcher. The Dodgers are beaten by the Yankees 6-2 in an exhibition game that follows the ceremonies. The crowd sets a record for a baseball game that will not be broken until the Dodgers return to the Coliseum for another exhibition contest on March 29, 2008.  

 

1966: After only four wins in the first twenty games, Yankee manager Johnny Keane is fired and replaced by the team's GM and former skipper Ralph Houk. 

1999: Hideki Irabu opposes Mac Suzuki of the Mariners in the first match-up of Japanese starting pitchers in major league history.

2017:  In a nationally televised Sunday night game, the Yankees defeat the Cubs 5-4 in 18 innings at Wrigley Field. The longest interleague game in history features a record 48 strikeouts ~ 26 by Yankees pitchers, and 22 by the Cubs. New York seem on their way to a victory with a 4-1 lead in the 9th, but Aroldis Chapman allows three runs, the last on a bases-loaded HBP of Anthony Rizzo. There is no more scoring until the top of the 18th, when Aaron Hicks, who has struck out four times in the game, leads off with a bunt single off Pedro Strop and moves to second on catcher Willson Contreras' throw, which ends up in right field. After moving to third, he scores on Starlin Castro's infield grounder, when shortstop Addison Russell's throw home is wide of the mark. Chasen Shreve pitches three scoreless innings for the win, which he ends by striking out pitcher Kyle Hendricks, who came in as a pinch-hitter with runners on first and second.

On this day in Yankee history... 


1915: At the Polo Grounds, Yankee pitcher Jack Warhop gives up the first major league home run by his opposite number, Red Sox starter Babe Ruth. The home team go on to win 4-3, though, in 13 innings.

2007: Hideki Matsui doubles to left in an at-bat against Jarrod Washburn of the Mariners for his 2000th hit, Nippon Pro and Major League basebll combined. The Yankees go on to win 5-0.

May 5th

 On this day in Yankee history... 


1925: Everett Scott is benched, ending his streak of 1,307 consecutive games played that started in 1918 while he was with the Red Sox. Scott, who gives way to Pee Wee Wanninger at shortstop, has the longest playing streak to that point, but his record will be broken by Lou Gehrig.

2010: Andy Pettitte earns his fourth win of the year against no losses in beating the Orioles 7-5, but the veteran Yankee starter has to be removed from the game after only 77 pitches and undergoes an MRI on his left elbow. The test reveals no structural damage, but Pettitte will have to rest until the inflammation goes away. He will retire after this season, then make a comeback in 2012.

1931:  In an effort to put less strain on his legs, Babe Ruth trades places with Lou Gehrig, playing first base while the Iron Horse moves to right field. Gehrig commits a costly error in the outfield, helping the Washington Senators  to a 7-3 win.

1981: Yankee reliever Ron Davis strikes out eight consecutive batters in a 4-2 victory over the California Angels at Anaheim Stadium, tying an AL record set by Nolan Ryan.

1912:  Leading 18-5 after eight innings, Philadelphia A's pitchers give up a record 9th-inning outburst of 10 runs to the New York Highlanders before Eddie Plank stops them at 18-15.

1936: Joe DiMaggio makes his Yankee debut, collecting three hits in a 14-5 victory over the St. Louis Browns.

1950: Vic Raschi, clearly troubled by the new rule that requires a one-second stop before delivery with men on base, balks four times in one game, a Yankee franchise record and two fewer than the single-season record. Nevertheless, Raschi wins 4-3 over the White Sox. He will finish the season with six balks to tie the since-topped AL mark.

1951: Yankee rookie Gil McDougald ties a major league record by driving in six runs in one inning. McDougald hits a grand slam and a two-run triple in the 9th inning of a 17-3 demolition of the St. Louis Browns at Sportsman's Park. The record will eventually be broken by Fernando Tatis of the Cardinals in 1999.

1986: Don Mattingly connects for three sacrifice flies in a 9-4 victory over the Rangers. Mattingly becomes only the sixth major leaguer to accomplish this feat.

2012: Mariano Rivera suffers a torn ligament in his right knee while shagging fly balls during batting practice before the Yankees' game with the Royals. He is carted off the field, and at 42, the injury appears to be career-ending, but he will be back to pitch a final season in 2013.
