On this day in Yankee history... 

1923: Joe Bush spins a three-hitter as the Yankees beat the New York Giants 8-1 in Game 5 of the World Series. The Yanks now lead 3 games to 2.

1964: In Game 6 of the World Series at St. Louis, Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle hit back-to-back home runs on consecutive pitches from Curt Simmons of the Cardinals, and Joe Pepitone belts a grand slam. The Yankees win 8-3 to force a seventh game.

Off the field, Joe Girardi is born. 















1976: Chris Chambliss hits a 9th-inning home run off Mark Littell of the Royals to give the Yankees a 7-6 win over Kansas City in the ALCS, and their first AL pennant in 12 years.

2000: Roger Clemens strikes out an ALCS record-setting 15 batters and tosses a 1-hitter in beating the Mariners 5-0, as the Yankees take a 3-1 series lead.
