June 25th

On this day in Yankee history...

1903: In Chicago the White Sox opt to bat first against the visiting Highlanders, but the head start proves to be not much of an advantage as the two teams battle to an 18-inning 6-6 tie, with a cumulative 30 hits between them.

1934: In beating the White Sox 13-2, pitcher Johnny Broaca strikes out 5 times, a dubious achievement that will not repeated by a Yankee until Bernie Williams in 1991. Lou Gehrig contributes to the rout by hitting for the cycle for the first time in his career.

1977: Mike Torrez outduels Luis Tiant to give the Yankees a 5-1 win over the Red Sox. Graig Nettles' 3-run homer is the big blow. New York now trail the Sox by three games.

1984: At the Stadium, Dave Winfield hits five singles and drives in four runs to lead the Yankees to a 7-3 win over the Tigers. Ron Guidry (6-5) is the beneficiary of Winfield's barrage. Winfield is now hitting .750 against Detroit this year, and has three five-hit games this month, tying a record set by Ty Cobb.

1985: After a bat boy was hit by a Butch Wynegar line drive foul ball yesterday, Yankees officials enact a new rule mandating the team's bat boys wear protective helmets during all games.

1999: At Camden Yards, the Yankees top the Orioles 9-8. Shane Spencer hits a go-ahead solo home run in the 9th off Mike Timlin, who will take the loss. Tino Martinez also contributes 4 hits for Nw York. In the 8th, the O's Jesse Orosco makes his 1,051th relief appearance, breaking Kent Tekulve's major league record.
