1908: Charging the Highlander ownership with refusing to spend money to build the team, manager Clark Griffith resigns; shortstop Kid Elberfeld replaces him as player-manager following today's 6-6 tie with the A's. New York continue to fade, and will finish last with 103 losses.
1934: After going hitless in his last 21 at bats, Babe Ruth hits a grand slam in a 5-0 Yankee win over the White Sox.

1936: Rookie phenom Joe DiMaggio ties three major-league records in New York's 10-run 5th inning against the Chicago, hitting 2 home runs for 8 total bases. With 2 doubles, he equals the modern record of four long hits in a game. The Yankees the White Sox 18-4.

1958:The Yankees erupt for five runs in the 4th inning off Early Wynn to beat the White Sox 6-2 at Comiskey Park. Mickey Mantle's drive into the CF bleachers leads off the inning, followed by a single, a walk, Jerry Lumpe's first major league home run, and a home run by Norm Siebern. Ryne Duren strikes out six of the last nine batters to preserve Bob Turley's win.

1962: A marathon between the Yankees and the Tigers concludes in the 22nd inning when Jack Reed's home run ~ the only one of his major league career ~ gives New York and Jim Bouton a 9-7 victory. Reed replaced Joe Pepitone in the 13th. For the Tigers, Phil Regan takes the loss, while Rocky Colavito has seven hits. Bobby Richardson ties a ML mark by going to the plate 11 times. At an even seven hours, the game is the slowest extra-inning contest ever played in the AL, and it is the longest game in innings in Yankee history.

1970: In a doubleheader with the Indians at the Stadium, Bobby Murcer ties Lou Gehrig's record of four straight homers. The Yankees lose the opener 7-2 despite Murcer's 9th-inning home run off Sam McDowell. Murcer next connects off the second game's starter, Mike Paul, hitting a solo shot in the 1st inning. A walkfollows in the 4th, then a two-run homer off Paul in the 5th, and a game-tying homer in the 8th, off Fred Lasher. New York score in the bottom of the 9th to salvage a 5-4 win.

1977: Before 54,940 at the Stadium, Roy White launches a dramatic two-out two-run homer in the bottom of the 9th to give the Yankees a 5-5 tie with the Red Sox. Reggie Jackson delivers a bases-loaded single in the 11th inning to give New York the walkoff win. White's key hit comes after Bill Campbell retires the first two Yankees in the 9th and then gives up a triple to Willie Randolph. Sparky Lyle picks up the win, handing Boston their first loss in eight games.

2011: In a 4-2 Yankee loss to the Rockie, A.J. Burnett becomes the first Yankee pitcher to strike out 4 batters in one inning. The right-hander starts the 6th inning by fanning Colorado hitters Chris Iannetta and Carlos Gonzalez, and when Chris Nelson reaches first base after swinging at a wild pitch for a third strike, he faces Todd Helton and strikes him out swinging to end the frame.
