1908: Johnny 'Grandma' Murphy is born.

1934: At Navin Field in Detroit, Yankee manager Joe McCarthy has to resort to some clever manoeuvring to keep a lumbago-stricken Lou Gehrig in the lineup, thus keeping the consecutive game streak intact ~ he bats Gehrig leadoff and lists him as the shortstop. After singling in the first inning, the 'Iron Horse' leaves the game without fielding as the Tigers pound out 11 doubles, needing them all as they edge the Yankees 12-11.

1939: The Yankees tie an AL record by registering only one assist, as Red Ruffing wins 8-3 over the Tigers.

1957: Bill Skowron hits a major league-record second pinch grand slam of the season, off Jim Wilson of the White Sox.  Skowron's shot comes in the 9th as the Yanks score six runs to win 6-4.

2011: In a 16-7 loss to the Blue Jays, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada play their 1,660th game together, surpassing the all-time record for the Bronx Bombers previously established by Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri in 1937.
