On this day in Yankee history... 

 
1906: Highlanders righthander 'Slow Joe' Doyle (so named because of his laborious pace on the mound) becomes the first 20th century player to start out with two shutouts when he beats Washington 5-0. Of his 23 lifetime victories, seven will be shutouts. The Yanks take the nitecap as well, 9-8, to begin a sweep of five doubleheaders in six days during which they outscore their opponents 76-31. 

1916: Johnny Lindell is born. 

1922: After hitting his 28th home run of the year in the 1st inning, Babe Ruth argues a called strike too vehemently in his next at bat and is thrown out of the game. He is subsequently suspended for the fifth time this season, and is out for three days. 

1931: At Boston, Ben Chapman and Lou Gehrig collect four hits each and jointly drive in nine runs as the Yankees roll over the Red Sox 14-4. Two of Chapman's hits leave the park, as does one of Gehrig's.

1939: Yankee rookie Atley Donald has a fastball timed at 94.7 miles per hour, establishing a new record. 

1945: 28-year-old Yankee rookie Bill Bevens retires the first 18 Red Sox batters he faces before giving up a walk and a double to Bob Johnson, the only hit for the Boston. Bevens wins, 7-1, defeating Boo Ferriss, who was trying for his 21st win.

1986: In action at Seattle, Tommy John (43) and Joe Niekro (41) become the first over-40 pitchers since 1933 to start both ends of a doubleheader. John loses 1-0, and Niekro pitches five innings for a 3-0 Yankee victory.

1997: David Wells threatens to punch out George Steinbrenner during a clubhouse argument. 

2005: Alex Rodriguez becomes only the second right-handed batter in Yankee history to hit 40 home runs in a season. Joe DiMaggio was the first when he had his only 40+ season in 1937, with 46.

2011: CC Sabathia finally defeats the Red Sox, after going 0-4 with a 7.20 ERA in his previous efforts against them this year. The Yankees win 5-2 at Fenway Park to move to within a half-game of the lead in the AL East. In a moment typical of the tense rivalry between the two teams, Francisco Cervelli hits only the third home run of his career for the Yanks in the 5th, then is plunked by Sox starter John Lackey in his next at-bat, leading to both benches clearing and the ejection of New York pitching coach Larry Rothschild.
