On this day in Yankee history... 


1913: The Yankees pick up third baseman Fritz Maisel from Baltimore of the International League for $12‚000 plus third baseman Ezra Midkiff (who is hitting .197) and outfielder Bert Daniels (.216). Maisel will become the greatest Yankee base stealer of his era.
  





1920: The Yankees are on the losing end of the American League's shortest 9-inning game ever, as they are blanked 1-0 by Tigers' pitcher Howard Ehmke. With no one out and two on in the 5th inning‚ the Yanks fail to capitalize as Ping Bodie  falls for the hidden ball trick applied by second baseman Ralph Young.

1953: Yankee southpaws Whitey Ford and Bob Kuzava hurl respective 1-0 and 3-0 shutouts against the White Sox. Kuzava takes a no-hitter into the 9th before giving up a double to Bob Boyd.

1956: Mickey Mantle's opposite-field homer off Camilo Pascual in the 1st inning, jump starts the Yankees to a 12-2 win over the Senators. Mantle is now 9 games ahead of Babe Ruth's 1927 pace.

1969: In his ML debut, Thurman Munson collects 2 hits and 2 RBI as the Yankees beat the visiting A's 5-0 in the second game of a double header.

1970: The Yankees honour Casey Stengel at Old Timers' Day at the Stadium, retiring the former manager's number 37.


  






1972: The Yankees sign a 30-year lease to play in a renovated Stadium starting in 1976; they will share Shea Stadium with the Mets while the renovations are carried out in 1974 and '75.  







1973: Facing Texas, Yankee starter Fritz Peterson injures himself fielding a bunt single by leadoff hitter Dave Nelson and is replaced by Fred Beene. Beene pitches 9 innings‚ allowing 4 hits and winning 3-2 on Gene Michael's two-out single in the 9th off starter Jim Merritt.

1989: Anthony Rizzo is born. 













1995: Ruben Sierra drives in 7 runs to lead New York to an 11-4 win over Baltimore. The three hits by the Yankee DH  include a single‚ double and home run.

1996: Darryl Strawberry launches a pair of homers to lead the Yankees to an 8-4 win over the White Sox. Strawberry now has 5 homers in his last 9 at bats.
