1920: Carl Mays, who started yesterday, opens today for the Yankees in Detroit. This time he is more effective, stopping the Tigers on two runs. Babe Ruth hits his 49th home run and Mays drives in the final run of a 4-2 win.

1927: Babe Ruth hits two home runs to bring his season's total to 52, and the Yankees sweep a doubleheader in Cleveland to clinch the AL pennant. They currently have a 98-41 record and lead the second place Philadelphia A's by 17 games. It is Miller Huggins' fifth flag, tying him with Connie Mack.
