1911: With a triple steal on, the Highlanders' Cozy Dolan drives in 3 runs with a single for half of his season RBI total. Unfortunately, it's in a losing cause, as Detroit prevail 9-4.

1930: Red Ruffing hits two home runs on the way to a 7-6 win over the Browns.

1938: The Yankees 'back into' their 10th pennant in franchise history, clinching the flag despite being swept in a doubleheader by the St. Louis Browns. 

1956: Mickey Mantle becomes the 8th man in ML history to hit 50 home runs in a season. The shot comes off Billy Pierce of the White Sox in the 11th on the way to a 3-2 Yankee win.  The victory also clinches the club's 22nd pennant in their history.

1960: Before 53,876 fans at the Stadium, the Yankees take a pair from the Orioles, 7-3 and 2-0. The Bombers have swept the four-game series, and the faltering Birds, now four back, will end up in 2nd place, eight games back. Ralph Terry's two-hitter in the nitecap beats Milt Pappas.

1962: At Washington's new ball park, D.C. Stadium, Mickey Mantle clouts the first home run there, and adds another, both off Washington starter Tom Cheney, to pace the Yankees to a 7-1 victory. The Mick has 5 RBI on the day. Ralph Terry picks up his 22nd win, the most by a Ynkee right-hander in 34 years. The result, combined with a Twins loss, leaves New York (90-63) in 1st place by four games.

1965: On Mickey Mantle Day at the Stadium, 50,180 fans come out to see No. 7 play his 2,000th game. Joe DiMaggio and Senator Robert Kennedy are on hand as Mantle is given a barbecue grill in the shape of a prairie schooner and a six-foot 100 lb. Kosher salami. In Mantle's first at bat, Detroit's Joe Sparma comes off the mound to shake his hand. The Mick then flies out. The Tigers go on to spoil the party by winning 4-3.

1979: Billy Martin reportedly pays rookie pitcher Bob Kammeyer $100 to hit former Yankee Cliff Johnson with a pitch in Cleveland's 16-3 rout of the Bronx Bombers. Toby Harrah belts two round-trippers as well, and the two combine for 9 RBI. The loss goes to Paul Mirabella but Kammeyer gives up all eight Tribe scores in the 4th inning without recording an out in his only appearance of the season.

1993: Trailing by two runs with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Mike Stanley hits a pop fly to left for the apparent third out, but time had been called just as the pitch was delivered due to a fan running out onto the Stadium field. Given a second chance, the Yankee catcher singles, which is followed by a Wade Boggs hit, a walk to Dion James, and a Don Mattingly 2-run single to beat the Red Sox 4-3.

2010: CC Sabathia becomes the first 20-game winner in the majors as the Yankees beat the Orioles 11-3 at Camden Yards. It is also the first time the lefty has attained the mark, having won 19 in a season twice before.

 On this day in Yankee history... 


1904: More than 23,000, reputedly the largest crowd in Boston history, show up for a showdown twinbill with the New York Highlanders. New York score three runs in each of the first two innings against Bill Dineen. Jack Chesbro (35-8) holds on for a 6-4 win, his 7th win in a row. New York briefly take over 1st place. But Cy Young tops New York 4-2 in the nitecap, beating Ned Garvin, recently acquired from Brooklyn. 

1928: Wilcy Moore, one of the Yankee pitching heroes of 1927, goes home with a sore arm after having worked just 60 innings all season. 

1951: The Yankees break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 9th when, with the bases loaded, Phil Rizzuto squeezes home Joe DiMaggio with the winning run. The score, off Cleveland's Bob Lemon, gives Eddie Lopat his 20th win of the year. The Yanks now lead Cleveland by a game and Boston by 2 1/2.

1961:  In Detroit, Roger Maris triples off Terry Fox in the 7th to put the Yankees ahead. The Tigers tie it and the score remains even until the 12th, when Maris faces Fox again with Tony Kubek on second. Maris steps out of the box to watch a long skein of Canadian geese fly over Tiger Stadium, then steps in back in and belts the first pitch for his 58th homer of the year.

1964: The Yankees beat the Angels 6-2, locking on to first place for good with a 2-percentage-point lead over the idle White Sox and Orioles. Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle have three hits each. Mantle's include his 2,000th career hit and his 450th home run, his 31st of the year. The Bombers have won two in a row and will run their win streak to 11 games.

1998: Red Hoff, the longest-lived ex-major leaguer, dies at the age of 107. While making his debut with the New York Highlanders in 1911, he struck out the first batter he ever faced ~ Ty Cobb. 

2002: The Yankees lose to the Devil Rays 9-7, but otherwise it's a day of milestones. Bernie Williams scores his 100th run in the loss to reach that mark for the 7th straight year. He is the 4th Yankee to score 100 this year, the first Yankee team to have that many since 1941. Williams and Derek Jeter combine to tie the major-league record for consecutive years for teammates both scoring 100+ runs.

2011: Mariano Rivera ties Trevor Hoffman's major league record with his 602nd career save in the Yankees' 7-6 win over the Blue Jays. Rivera is backed by home runs from Alex Rodriguez, playing in his first game since aggravating a wrist injury on September 9th, and Curtis Granderson, who becomes the first Yankee CF since Mickey Mantle in 1961 to hit 40 home runs in a season.

September 16th

 

On this day in Yankee history... 


1905: The Highlanders find themselves a little short on infielders, so RF Willie Keeler, a lefty, plays 2B in both games of a twin bill. The talented Keeler played two games at shortstop for New York in the NL in 1893.  

1922: Pennant fever rages in St. Louis as the Yankees come to town with a 1/2 game lead. Bob Shawkey outpitches Urban Shocker 2-1, as George Sisler ties Ty Cobb's 1911 record by hitting in his 40th consecutive game. While chasing a fly ball in the 9th, New York outfielder Whitey Witt is hit in the head and knocked cold by a soda bottle thrown from the bleachers. AL president Ban Johnson will initially offer a $1,000 reward for the name of the bottle-thrower. Then, to calm the crowds, he offers the theory that Witt stepped on the bottle and it flew up and hit him. The incident leads to a ban on the sale of bottled drinks in ballparks.

1939: The Yankees clinch their fourth straight pennant with an 8-5 win over the Tigers at the Stadium.

1948: Joe DiMaggio becomes the 9th player in ML history to hit 300 home runs, connecting for the milestone off Fred Hutchinson of Detroit. 

1950: Rookie Whitey Ford tosses a six-hitter to give the Yankees the rubber game in Detroit 8-1 and move them back into first place. Joe DiMaggio hits his 30th homer and the Yanks score seven runs in the 9th as Ford drives to his seventh win without a loss.

1955: Mickey Mantle pulls a hamstring running out a bunt. He will make just two pinch-hit appearances in September, and go to bat in the World Series just 10 times.  

1958: Former Yankee second baseman and 1945 AL batting champion George 'Snuffy' Stirnweiss is killed in  train crash in Red Bank, NJ at the age of 39. 

1978: With 55,091 looking on, the Yankees snap a 2-2 tie with a 9th-inning triple by Willie Randolph and a sacrifice fly by Thurman Munson to beat the Red Sox 3-2. New York now lead by 3 1/2 games. The Yanks score first on a Reggie Jackson two-run blast in the 5th. Both starters, Catfish Hunter and Mike Torrez, go the distance.

1979: At the Stadium, the Yankees hold Catfish Hunter Day to honor their future Hall of Fame pitcher who has already announced that he will be retiring at the end of the season at the age of 33. A 20-year-old left-hander named Dave Righetti makes his major league debut for the hometown team. 

1997: The Yankees sweep the Red Sox, winning 2-0 and 4-3. Andy Pettitte pitches eight innings in the opener, striking out a career-high 12. Willie Banks is the winner in the nitecap with 6 2/3 innings.

2008: In the Yankees' last homestand at their original stadium, Derek Jeter passes Lou Gehrig for the most career hits at the storied ballpark. In action against the White Sox, he collects his 1,270th hit in the venue, a single past Juan Uribe while facing Gavin Floyd.

2012: The Yankees beat the Rays 6-4 behind Hiroki Kuroda and Rafael Soriano's 40th save of the season. New York remain in first place, one game ahead of the Orioles and 5 in front of the fading Rays.

 On this day in Yankee history... 


1906: At Chicago, the White Sox lose a pair to the Highlanders before 20,000, their largest Friday afternoon crowd of the year. Hal Chase has 22 putouts at first base for New York in the first game, tying the major league record. 

 

1923: Babe Ruth is the unanimous choice of sportswriters as AL MVP. 

 

1956: In action at Fenway, Mickey Mantle hits a 480 ft. home run to straightaway center, and Bill Skowron has 5 hits. Unfortunately, the Yankees set an unenviable ML record by leaving 20 men on base, and lose to the Red Sox 13-9.

1963: Yogi Berra hits his 358th and final career home run in a losing cause, as the Yankees fall to the A's 5-3.

2014: Brett Gardner hits the 15,000th home run in Yankee history off Toronto's Drew Hutchison in the 5th inning of a 5-2 New York win. The total dates back to the team's first season in NYC in 1903 and is the most of any major league franchise. Masahiro Tanaka is the winner in his return to the mound after a ten-week layoff.

September 14th

 

On this day in Yankee history... 


1904: With a half-game lead over New York, Boston send Bill Dineen to the mound. Patsy Dougherty leads off with a single and Willie Keeler follows with a bunt that catcher Lou Criger fires into the crowd to allow Patsy to score. Keeler scores a play later. Boston's only tally against Jack Chesbro comes in the 9th on a 2-base error and a wild pitch. New York win 3-1. The nightcap is called after five innings and a 1-1 score. 

1924: Jerry Coleman is born.

1935: Frank Crosetti returns to New York after an operation at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins Hospital to remove floating cartilage in his right knee. He will soon return to his home in California. 

1950: In Detroit, Vic Raschi posts his 20th win of the season to give the Yankees a hard-fought 7-5 win. Raschi walks in two runs in the opening inning as the Tigers tally four runs, but New York come back as Joe DiMaggio cracks his 29th home run of the year and Johnny Mize follows a walk to Hank Bauer with his 10th. New York take over first place by a half game.

1953: The Yankees clinch their 5th straight pennant, and their 20th in franchise history, with an 8-5 win over the Indians. Billy Martin delivers 4 RBI.

1958: The Yankees wrap up their 24th pennant, and 9th under Casey Stengel, by winning the opening game of a doubleheader with the Kansas City A's 5-3. Stengel is now tied with Connie Mack for mot AL flags won. New York complete the sweep with a 12-7, 14-inning win in game two. Virgil Trucks allows just two hits over the last six innings for the win.

1974: Graig Nettles homers for the Yankees in the first inning, and brother Jim homers for the Tigers in the 2nd. This is the second time that the two brothers have homered in the same game for different teams, having done it on June 11, 1972, when Graig was with the Indians and Jim with the Twins. Graig's team win 10-7.

1999: The Yankees rally with a pair of grand slams, just the 3rd time in club history, to beat the Blue Jays 10-6. Bernie Williams ties the game with a slam in the 8th inning, and Paul O'Neill wins it in the 9th with another bases loaded bomb.

1920: Carl Mays, who started yesterday, opens today for the Yankees in Detroit. This time he is more effective, stopping the Tigers on two runs. Babe Ruth hits his 49th home run and Mays drives in the final run of a 4-2 win.

1927: Babe Ruth hits two home runs to bring his season's total to 52, and the Yankees sweep a doubleheader in Cleveland to clinch the AL pennant. They currently have a 98-41 record and lead the second place Philadelphia A's by 17 games. It is Miller Huggins' fifth flag, tying him with Connie Mack.

2011: Mariano Rivera becomes the second pitcher to record 600 saves, one year after Trevor Hoffman, in preserving a 3-2 Yankee win over the Mariners. 'Mo' is only one save behind Hoffman's all-time record, as the San Diego closer retired after last season.

1907: Spud Chandler is born.

1914: Roger Peckinpaugh replaces Frank Chance as Yankee manager. The 23-year-old shortstop becomes the youngest manager in ML history, and the 7th in the club's 12-year existence. He will win 9 of 17 games and will manage next at Cleveland in 1928. 

1916: Charlie 'King Kong' Keller is born.

1932: With their 100th victory of the year, the Yankees clinch their 7th AL pennant, as George Pipgras beats the Indians 8-3 at Cleveland Stadium. Joe McCarthy, who captured a flag with the Cubs in 1929, becomes the first manager to win pennants in both the American and National Leagues.

1990: Steve Adkins doesn't allow a hit in his major league debut, but he walks 8 batters in just 1 1/3 innings, as Texas win 5-4. Adkins walks the first three batters, then retires the side. After a fly out in the 2nd, he walks the next five before being lifted, two shy of Dolly Gray's ML consecutive walk record.

2000: Darryl Strawberry, already under suspension, is sentenced to two years' house arrest after admitting he violated probation by driving under the influence of medication and leaving the scene of an accident.  

2013: The Yankees beat the Orioles 6-5 as their newest player, shortstop Brendan Ryan (acquired in a trade three days earlier) scores the winning run in the 9th. He opens the inning with a single and reaches third when O's closer Jim Johnson throws Chris Stewart's bunt into center field. Johnson then bounces a pitch to the screen to allow Ryan to score. The loss is a letdown for Baltimore, as Danny Valencia had tied the game with a three-run homer off David Robertson in the 8th.
